SHAME unto all these lightweight Ghanaian Celebrity junkies slamming One Direcion for telling the truth about the real state of Ghana's Poor Public Health situation.
THE COUNTRY UNDER THE NDC GOVERNMENT HAS BECOME A MOST DIRTY FILTHY STATE OF SQUALOR AND PUTREFACTION.
So many people think development of a country is marked by huge buildings sprawling about the Capital of Ghana. NO! Accra is one of the most dirtiest, filthiest, congested, poorly sanitised capital city on earth. Accra is shameful to behold, and the rest of the country remains shockingly dirty and major source of ill-health.
Between 2005 and 2008, I visited Ghana almost 14 times and saw the hard and exuberant work of Zoomlion, employing people to clean up filth across the country but we are now back to batan under the children of pan latrine carriers, who only care about big cars they will ride in the capital.
I saw a once beautiful river/lagoon with mangrove swamp at the Junction of Labadi/Trade Fair site now filled with huge pile of rubbish dumped by invisible Ghanaians. The International Trade Fair site itself has had its water cut off due to its huge indebtedness, and one can imagine the state of the toilets there! Behind Osu Castle are two ponds, reeking of putrefaction and foul scent, breeding giant mosquitoes that bite like snakes.. The stench in Makola Market in the heart of Accra is bewildering. You can imagine Odododiodio and Nima, where ndc supporting residents live like refugees!
Ghana has the same old public toilets, which are always full and still being used. Mountain tops, beaches, bushes, uncompleted buildings are the major sites for people to defacate. Cape Coast is in its most dirtiest state ever since the 1960s. From the London Bridge through Melcom/Kingsway to the Anafo market where the fisherfolk and civil servants alike buy all their food/fish are two huge containers where pan latrine are poured into them and would remain there for weeks, whiles children and adults openly shit in the big gutters with no care. All the gutters are filled to the brim with rubbish, reeking of bad odour, that stinks like thousand dead bodies stuffed under paved gutters that hit your chest like a bomb; but the putrefaction and foul stinking evil smell cannot beat the stench of Takoradi gutters covered by old broken pavements. The squalor throughout Ghana is near tragic proportions and can cause bubonic plaque.
As soon as you leave your house to the main Accra city, you panic...where do you go to toilet? In the Ministries, I asked for one to the horror of my big man: he said 'All the toilets here are closed because there is no water'. I asked again; where do you go to toilet if you need one? he replied - 'I don't, and that is why I do not eat when I come to work, otherwise I have to leave my work and go so far to use the common loo than shit on so much shit', he confessed. But my stomach was reeling from the bacteria infected by the dirty environment and breaking me down. You cannot also go back home in a traffic that can take almost 2 to 3 hours. I was directed to use the toilet in the Supreme Court buildings: there was none, and so they pointed out another court buildings at Adjabeng, all in the heart of the nation's capital, where lawyers in wigs and gowns parade; but what I saw there was too much for me: The toilets were old, dirty, slimy, and the attendant had to flush the toilet with some dirty water before you squat to use them.
You go to restaurants where they sell their swalaba and fried rice, and their 'washrooms' (as they call it) have permanent toilet in the toilet basin) This is a country where 5.4 Million defacate in public and said to cost $79 Million; throughout Ghana, grown men and women defacate in public. Market women just go to toilet or urinate in plastic bags and containers and dumped them in the open rubbish dumps contributing to the stinking atmosphere that might have hit the pleasant One Direction people like the taliban's sniper!
Some throw their toilet into open gutters like it used to happen during the 'catch and throw' days of Agege. Go to places like Ashaiman, Agege town near Mamprobi, Kaneshie, Kasoa and Kotokuraba markets, Achimota-Ofankor and every where else and dirt confronts you like a storm...
We know the NDC Government and their corrupt and talkative cronies can pay bribes to poor people to win elections but why are they not bothered about residents of Teshie who sell fish near public toilets filled to the brim and overflowing to the same floor where children are playing. Rubbish dumps are everywhere and spreading ever so wide: They just burn the heap of rubbish. If a government cannot even deal with rubbish, what else can it do?
One Direction would have seen better houses and hotels in US, Europe, Japan, Australia etc and cannot be impressed by all these fanciful buildings in Accra, sited near stinking gutters and as realisst sent on a mission to uncover facts about poverty in Ghana and Africa, they cannot be expected to tell a lie like our so-called celebrities do.
Ghana is now so dirty, poorly, wretched and simply ugly. Development must be even and uniform, which must involve clean healthy surroundings. There are no drainage outlets in all these new places, where people are building all these houses upon houses: Households have suck-away drainage, where their waste water from toilets and kitchens drain into the ground/soil, causing unnecesary flooding after little rainfall. Look at the enormous filth piled up in the huge gutter at Accra Nkrumah's circle. What amazes me is the rubbish left overnight at every market place in Ghana, especially Mankesim, Kasoa and Kotokuraba 'guam'.
I saw a group of visiting Europen Pastors staring in awe and disbelief a pile of remnants of filth in front of Cape Coast Methodist church, where Metro Buses park: one Lady remarked: I wish I can get a broom to sweep this before my visiting pastors snap it and take it to Europe.
I did not go to Kumasi but my Sister was shocked at its poor state of sanitationand the fact that most of the villagers in mampong and Krobo use the bush to go to toilet. WHY this in this day and age, where we have Abeiku Santana and queue of celebrities parading about as high pontificating celebrity junkies; but they say Tamale is worse with sachet plastic bags strewn around like confetti. Then Bawku, Bature's Bongo, Salaga and Savelugu, where 'obi nko dua wo bi no dze so' has caused widespread faeces across the sahelian plains breeding giant flies and tsetseflies that carry bacteria and virus from one household to another killing innocent poor people.
From Keta through Ningo prampram across the coastal stretch atJames Town, Korle lagoon (now back to its most foulest stench) to 0kokrobite, Awutu Senya, Winneba, Apam, Oyuam, Moree, Ekon, Oguaa, Elmina, Ampenyi, to Shama all the way to Axim, the common sight is open defacation along the sandy beaches. Rawlings outlawed it but failed as usual to provide toilets and so thay are back to batan.
Sekondi is a sorry sight when it comes to rubbish sites. I was hit by a strong smell in one of the nearby fishing village near Inchaban. People just pack their rubbish in plastic containers and dumped them in the nearby bushes; and so wherever you pass in Ghana, you get hit by stench. Pigs openly eat faeces in public toilets at night times; dirt filled drainages pour into natural lagoons such as Chemu, Sakumono Fosu, etc; dirt, dirt and more dirt is all you see around you in Ghana as cars and more cars pass by them.
Zoomlion was attacked by anti-capitalist NDC people and so they diversified into Poly Tank business; its skeletal staff now clean the areas where John Mahama and cohort live. Those places are clean but then they come and work in the dirty areas like the Osu Castle where the main gutter from Osu Alata to Osu Kinkawe or whatever is full with dunk. Jesus of Nazareth - right behind the seat of government...
I sincerely thank 'One Direction' for telling the truth. Which tourist groups will come to such unhealthy environment? Wherever you turn, there is a mixture of plush buildings around dirty surroundings. You can go on and on until the Islamic militants in Mali finish destroying Timbuctu.
Useless NDC government must be allowed to clean all the mess they created since their return to power in 2008!
Or to put in another way, Why is NPP striving to rule such a dirty battered countr, full of dirt and rubbish?

Middle-income country. That must be some grand achievement. And what was the proportion of people who lived on less than 2 Dollars a day? What was the percentage of our youngsters with no training and employment? How many state schools were built under his leadership? Don't use political rhetorics like 'middle-income' country to disguise the endemic problems we've faced under all the different political parties we've had over the years. I'm no fan of NDC, neither am I an ardent supporter of NPP, PPP or what have you. But what I do know is that no government after independence has transformed our society into a fair and equal one. Poverty is rising exponentially, while very few are getting richer and richer. The middle-class, if there are any, are keeping their heads above H2O, while the working-class are just trying to survive. As for the poor, the marginalised, women and children, God help them. Our education system has been in shambles for far too long. Most of our public institutions are manned by incompetent pigs who care only about themselves. Our churches are also bleeding us to death. What did Kuffour's government do in eight years? And don't get started about the corruption under Rawlings' rule. Mills, I can't say I no much about his governance, but judging from the the situation before his death it wasn't great either. With reference to Mahama, I'm not so sure about his competence and zeal to drive Ghana forward. He was part of JJ's corrupt administration. Has he changed that much now? Well, we live to see.

You gave a very insightful common sense to do list but I have no confidence in this NDC party and Dramani at all to deliver them. Quite frankly they are the worst of the two parties just look at its composition. Their leaders mainly come from the regions that too often boast of their credentials but have nothing to show for it like you so eloquently describe it. As if that's not bad enough they fervently believe that others have held them down and deserve gov't to remedy their plight. Henceforth, they are on a mission to reject, destroy, and even kill anything or anybody that challenge them to use their credntials to work harder and to stop depending on gov't only for jobs. Such was the atmosphere in which NDC was founded in the first place and has being circling the wagon ever since. I am victim mentality has resulted in influx of people into the major cities looking for gov't jobs. 51% of Ghana's population live in the cities, 25% live in Accra and Kumasi alone, 20% in the rest of the cities, and a whopping 5% are at president John Dramani's office, or on his line all looking for gov't jobs. The president must do what unigov did like operation feed yourself and send all these people back to their villages with machetes ready for work.

Nii, you've raised a lot of good points in your article. The address system is really my favourite, I'm very passionate about that. The academic degree aspect is really interesting. In Ghaan we place much emphases on what you have rather than what you can actually done (skill and competency). Most of these appointments are made as a form of reward for supporting the party, in which case academic qualification will not be a factor. The constitution also requires the president to appoint more than half of his ministers from parliament . What this tells you is that the president hasn't got unlimited powers to appoint anyone that he want. What they sort to do is to appoint MPs with qualifications and hope that they will be able to do the job .

Nii, I'd like to commend you for this excellent piece. I cannot over-emphasise its relevance today. Most of the forward-thinking people on this forum would understand your concerns about our political leaders and their inability/incompetency to drive Ghana forward. Enough with bunch of articles written to stir up ethnic tensions among Ghanaians. This is much relevant to our current predicament. Ghana is was in a sorry state before the discovery of oil and I'm afraid it still is. What we need are visionary leaders who care passionately about our social ills and are willing to transform our society with the resources at our disposal. But unlike you, I'm not overly optimistic about our future. There are still the same old faces from the P/NDC era behind the scenes pulling political strings. Too much over-reliance on these allies who did nothing but plunder and bleed Ghana to its knees. What Ghana needs is fresh ideas. I think the discovery of oil is really going to take corruption in Ghana to another level. Now, most of these politicians will be desperate for an appointment to enjoy the gravy train. I've been weeping for Ghana for so long that no more tears trickle down my fat cheeks.

Completely agree Nii, what we have is a hot potato, political culture if you will, of corruption at the top. Those who are not corrupt do not make it to the top because they are not ruthless or conniving enough; they get connived, bullied and tricked. I have heard of many a good man and woman in Ghana who has been ruined by morally bankrupt peers willing to leave a trail of sorrow if it means they can eat more cake.
If ordinary Ghanaians keep hearing about the great success story that is Ghana, but do not see oil or mineral wealth on their own doorsteps, then it is only a matter of time before there will be trouble. For all politicians.
