Kodzo was the best headmaster in the Volta Region and among the best in Ghana, no two ways about that. For a long time, he was chairman of the conference of headmasters of assisted secondary schools in the VR and he bullied his fellow headmasters to do the right things always. Biheco was great under Kodzo. He managed the school so well that we heard government was always wanting to take away the surplus funds the school had accumulated all the time. And yet we had four meals a day - one of the few schools in Ghana with such a policy.

But Kodzo's greatest achievements were his dedication to academic excellence and disciplinary upbringing. This made the school truly one of the best in the country. The O and A level results were ALWAYS among the best in the country. Students always got special prizes from WAEC for top performance in subjects like Maths. Kodzo would proudly announce this at his Monday morning after breakfast assemblies.

Biheco made many of us what we are today. And Kodzo started it all. And he lived to a ripe old age - 92.

Rest in peace, Kodzo, the Dutchman who made his name in Kpandu and left his mark on the educational history of our country!

Thank you for the aforementioned statements -- they show that, despite my research, there were many things I still was unable to unearth.

Well, I did not get to enjoy four meals a day, although our meals weren't too bad. I even was able to get the kitchen staff to provide me a special diet, as I did not eat pepper in those days.

One of the "staples" of the school was the mandatory trip to the farm each Saturday, which helped the school/kitchen staff cut down on cost. In effect, making us go to the farm was another of the several forms of self-discipline that we had to learn.

Sam, I see that you remember your Biheco days with extreme fondness. I hope many, many old and new Bihecans will see this piece, read it, and share their own experiences, as that'll be the best way to remember Rev. Father Priems.

For a Dutchman, Kodzo's English was very good. He liked using big words so you'd have loved him, Daniel. He would always give notice to the school of dismissals and suspensions (very common with him) by putting up some of his big words on the school notice board. He would write something like:

The following students have been rusticated for gross misdemeanour and blatant disregard of authority...

Then he would sign it with his special signature which was like an angry fowl scratching the grass for a lost worm.

Mawuli Secondary School was also affectionately called Kole Bu, 37 Millitary Hospital, KATH, Effia Nkwanta, etc.

My man! It is clear you don't even know that you are making a mistake! You could have saved face by saying you omitted the apostrophe before the "s", thus, u shld've written "children's computers", which is the correct English. There is nothing like "childrens" in English!

BTW, I suppose if the children each have a pc at home and they are networked, all will have the same IP address, so trying to use them to hide your track is not feasible. Same for laptops with wireless access to the one source. Only different subscriptions each can do the trick but even that they can all be traced to the same house by experts!

I never met Father Priems but the foundation he laid enabled the likes of me to go to BH for the 6th Form in 1975. I can confess that Amakpa had a hand in chiseling away my "guy guyism" and helped me to concentrate on my books. I am forever indebted to BH. Expect protestations from our "noisy neighbours" from the capital of the Volta Region known those days for producing mainly doctors.

Indeed in those days, it was rumoured that if you nnever came back into the Sixth Form having passed throgh the "O" Level Standard, then you were an academic failure at the time.

As taught later, the motto Sicut Miles Christi still makes a lot of people fight on as A Soldier of Christ; hence the successes in their individual lives. To buttress that point in life students were always taught later to look at the lone red and glowing lamp on the Only highest point on campus, the school water reservoir to remind yourself that you live for Christ and must be prepared to suffer to attain the highest achievements in life like the "lonely" red bright star above all else on the Campus

After all, Manasseh Azure is also proud of his Krachi Sec School and loses no time in telling us what a great (?) journalist he has become even though he went to a village sec Sch. But it's good to class Biheco as among the best. It's safer so. I was there meself under Kodzo for seven years and I will attest to that fact. That was really a great institution. I don't know if it still is today with the widespread cheating in examinations that is now so common in Ghana with thousands of students now getting 8As.

In all honesty, I don't think any school -- or a student of a school -- could have unilaterally claimed the top honors, as we both know that a lot of subjective and partisan evaluations go into rating schools.

I think my piece's legitimacy is enhanced by the modesty I have shown: that Biheco ranked, and may still rank, in the top ten of all secondary schools.

Sorry, but I never heard of Gomoa Secondary School when I was growing up -- but I am sure it exists somewhere in Ghana! (Smile!)

I was in Kpandu in November 2012 with a group of Canadian Engineers. They could not believe the neatnes and imposing demeanour of the school. One of them asked if it was a Polytechnic and I humbly said that BIHECO is in fact a Secondary school. They were pleasantly surprised. They had visited Ghana and other secondary schools previously and thought BIHECO was the best they had seen in terms of neatness. I proudly drove them round the campus pointing at my former house St Benedicts. I explained how 49 of 51 staff members were resident on campus with very comfortable accommodation. The availability of running water and light 24/7/365 was unique in Ghana. So BIHECO has by no means at all suffered the fate of the average Secondary School in Ghana. That for me shows Kodzo's legacy still burns.

Unlike your mother's pot of soup to which you can bestow any accolades, the records of the Secondary Schools in Ghana are public information; and nobody ever hears of Gomoa Secondary School. One would think that after an anonymous person claimed that you plagiarized your History thesis you would learn by now that Opinions are like ARSEHOLES and everybody has one. Old students of Bishop Herman College in Kpando have undertaken a medical outreach programme as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the College.

Past students of the College who are health professionals, including medical doctors, pharmacists, lab technicians and nurses screened over 600 people from Kpando and nearby communities.

Leader of the Medical Outreach Team and an old student, Prof Anyetei Larsey, said the common illness of the people screened during the exercise include hypertension and malaria among the young people while the elderly complained mainly about arthritis.
Basic over the counter drugs were also dispensed where it was suitable while others were referred to the hospital.

The Medical Outreach was one of the Homecoming activities undertaken by the old students as they spend time with the current students during career counseling sessions.
They advised students on the subject choices required to pursue various careers.
Other events to mark the 60th Anniversary Homecoming included a National Congress which saw the re-election of the National President Edem Kpodo who is also the Chairman of the Ghana Tourist Board.
There were fun games between the students and their predecessors, and a fund raising musical concert led by former student and hip-life artiste Edem. The Theatre Mirror group was also in Kpando to entertain the Old boys as well as the students and staff of the College.
Headmaster of the College, Rev. Father Walter Agbeto, described the three day programme as successful and commended the Old Students for their dedication and contribution towards the welfare of the school.

Other programmes lined up for the celebrations include an Anniversary Lecture on the 29th of June this year to be delivered by His Eminence Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson, to be followed by a fundraising dinner dance on the 30th of June both in Accra.

The anniversary durbar will take place on the 28the of July in Kpando to be followed by a church service in August which will be led by Old Boys who are in the priesthood.
Bishop Herman College is one of the best second cycle institutions in Ghana. It was the first secondary school established by the Catholic Church in the Volta Region, on February 28, 1952.

The college was named after the famous Catholic Bishop of the then Lower Volta Vicariate of the Catholic Church, Bishop Auguste Herman, a Frenchman.

He was noted for not only planting the Catholic Church firmly in the Region but also opening schools alongside. His personal motto, Sicut Miles Christi (As a soldier of Christ) was also chosen as the motto of the school.

He was just an amateur musician who composed our anthem. He died before he reached old age.

Too bad ghanaweb put this article in the inside page and refused to post it among the first ten on the Opinion pages for maximum exposure. Instead he posted those stupid articles by Bokor (I hope Bokor didn't attend Biheco) and other political articles that many of us are fed up with these days.

We need more of such articles to show that there are so many things we Ghanaians can talk about, not just NPP, NDC, Mahama, Akufo, Ewe, Akyem, Asante.

Bishop Herman was, indeed, a good school. (I don't know it still is). And there were students from all over the country. There was no tribalism in Bishop Herman. There were many Akans there too.

Joyce Etu-Mantey was with the Ghana mission in Copenhagen when she died. Joyce was the only girl to "attend" Biheco. Since her father was a teacher on campus, she was allowed to join the Upper 6th classes for her 2nd World War. That was after Kodzo had left. I don't know if Kodzo would have allowed that.

I am sure the name Amakpa was given to Father Eleeza way back in the 60s. It was, anyway, there before I entered the school. When I entered Biheco, Father Eleeza had just returned from abroad where he did his M.A. in History (which he also taught in the early 70s). And he was already called "Amakpa" during his earlier stint as Chaplain.

The story went that he was testing a new vegetable stew or soup before the entire student body. Then he smiled and said something to the effect: "Hmmmm, evivi lo, amakpa..."

Since Eleeza was not Ewe, he didn't know not to say "amakpa" (for vegetable) but to have said something like "amadetsi". From then on, he was called "Amakpa".

As for Father Priems being called "Kodzo", the story goes that he, himself, on learning about our day names, asked what he would be called if he was born on a Monday, as he truly was. From then, he became known as "Kodzo". Everybody called him "Kodzo" including the townsfolk. Daniel made a slight mistake here. Father Priems was always called "Father Priems" or "Kodzo". Nobody called him "Father Kodzo". No, that didn't work. He was Kodzo and he knew that everybody called him so. All the students called him "Kodzo" but to his face, you said: "Yes, Father" or "No, Father." It was not beyond Kodzo to slap you if he saw you as insubordinate.

May Kodzo's soul rest in perfect peace. Were he to be buried in Kpandu, all of Catholic Volta Region would turn up for the funeral. I am sure of that. As it is, perhaps only a few will be there for his internment at Maastricht. He was a priest, a poor man who really served his God through the discipline and upbringing he gave to thousands of young boys. Really as a soldier of Christ.

It sounds stupid but that was what we felt when we heard Kodzo was leaving at what was a rather young age. He must have been around 60 when he left. But we didn't care because we too were leaving.

But it seems Amakpa did well too and kept the high standards of the school. He should know what to do. He had been part of the school for a long time before he became Headmaster. Under Kodzo, he was assistant headmaster, school chaplain, teacher in charge of the GCE Exams, History teacher and so he knew everything. No doubt he did well as headmaster too.

It was and still is one of the best in my humbled opinion in the nation......army officers and other professionals were more than eager to have their wards enrolled in the school.......since 1972 the year I stepped on its campus, it has consistently maintained a 100 percent score on WAEC exams and produced great folks...the late Volta Regional Minister, Ford Kamel was a product of the school, my four-year junior as a matter of fact....so, you see, like you frankly admitted, your list was complied with a certain degree of honesty but tainted nonetheless with a bit of bias........

Now wonder we have so many graduates who arent just lazy in thinking, they arent also fit for the job market. A High School graduate in the US has better problem solving skills that a masters holder in Ghana.

You know Asma died too. I think in the US. But that guy smoked egbe too much. Is Afeku-Amenyo Hillary still in the Ghana navy? Awumey William informed me a few years ago he was traveling through Europe with his kids from the US and he visited Kodzo in Maastricht. He said Kodzo still remembered him.
