Politics is not about degrees or achievement or even your contribution to the society. It's about relationship and politicking. Your idea that if you contribute to the community then you must win at the polls is ridiculous. Your Utopian view of politic is childish. Grow up. Life is not fair and politics is really not fair but that's all we have. Live with it or focus on developing your own life I do.

The community is not made of stones but individuals. So if individuals develop themselves instead of waiting for politicians, then the whole community develops.

A report by the Daily Graphic on ghanaweb today states in part: “A 67-year-old banker and agricultural-economist, Dr Percival Alfred Kuanchie, won the election to represent the Central Region, reports Tina Arkorful. Dr Kuranchie polled 38 out of the 40 votes. Mr Ato Essuman, who has been the central regional representative on the council since 2004, polled two votes.”

As you may observe the central regional winner is not, on paper, a small boy – he is 67 years old, a banker and an agricultural economist. Do you think he has nothing to contribute at the council of state?

Secondly, this same report indicates that Mr. Ato Essuman has been a member of the council of state since 2004 – meaning he has served under 2 different administrations. Do you think it is only fraud, threat, coercion, bribery, etc., that can lead to his being beaten in the game this time?

Mr. Essuman was elected in 2004 (NPP administration), re-elected in 2008/9 (Mills administration) and defeated in 2012/3 (Mahama administration). If it was only politics that determined the elections, why was he elected in the Mills administration? And if it is true that Mr. Essuman is going to be a running mate of the NPP (a long shot there, as no one has discounted Bawumia for now) does that assertion not give cause for worry to his opponents in the NDC to campaign against his election?

Finally, I just can’t imagine the sufferings of the members of the Electoral College in their hotel rooms being threatened, bribed, subdued, dehumanised, by NDC terrorists to ensure that they voted for Dr. Kuranchie. Have you returned from the Central Region? Maybe you should follow the tracks of Dr. Kuranchie and tell us what he has done for his community.

89 (1) There shall be a Council of State to counsel the President in the performance of his functions.
(2) The Council of State shall consist of -
(a) the following persons appointed by the President in consultation with Parliament -
(i) one person who has previously held the office of Chief Justice;
(ii) one person who has previously held the office of Chief of Defence Staff of the Armed Forces of Ghana;
(iii) one person who has previously held the office of Inspector-General of Police;
(b) the President of the National House of Chiefs;
(c) one representative from each region of Ghana elected, in accordance with regulations made by the
Electoral Commission under article 51 of this Constitution, by an electoral college comprising two
representatives from each of the districts in the region nominated by the District Assemblies in the region;
and
(d) eleven other members appointed by the President.
(3) The Council of State shall elect a chairman from among its members.

The writer has just hammered the nail right on the head.Though I'm very unfamiliar with the shenanigans and entry procedure into the Council of State whose very nature is acute partisanship, I'll bet on my bottom dollar that its name is a misnomer.Instead of the Council of State misnomer why don't they re-christen it appropriately as Council of Party Elders? At least it'd be a fitting honor for old party faithfuls and a fitting place to draw their retirement benefits. If it's not a partisan Council of State leaning unscruplously towards the ruling party then how do we explain the membership of Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor, a tribal bigot let alone his chairmanship of the last Council of State? In the civilized world Mr Awoonor would have painted himself into a corner or perhaps shot himself in the foot with the declaration in his book that he is first an ewe and second a ghanaian and that the sole purpose of the Rawlings coup of 1982 coup was to overthrow the Akan hegemony and replace it with an Ewe hegemony. That would have been enough to disqualify him from holding any public office. The Council of State must be reconstituted with elderly statesmen who are non partisan independent minded ghanaians whom we can rely on in times of peace and crisis.In the last elections members of the council of state were actively involved in the political campaigning. We can't call that a council of state.That's a huge joke.
