Safa have suspended their president and four other top officials in the wake of a report into a pre-World Cup match-fixing scandal.
Safa president Kirsten Nematandani and four staff members, including the organisation’s newly promoted chief executive officer Dennis Mumble, have been suspended from duty following the fixing of the results of four warm-up matches that South Africa played in preparation for the 2010 World Cup.
A Fifa investigation into the activity of convicted Singapore match fixer Wilson Perumal Raj and his Football 4U organisation fingered the five South African officials, a press briefing was told.
The results of matches against Thailand, Bulgaria, Colombia and Guatemala in the weeks leading up the 2010 World Cup were found to have been pre-arranged to benefit an Asian betting syndicate.
Safa has apologised to Fifa, and undertaken urgent and serious action to deal with the matter.
Safa said a commission of enquiry will be set up “as a matter of urgency”, and Nematandani will appear before the commission to explain his role in the matter.
“Having considered the implications of this for Safa, the [Safa emergency] committee asked the president to take a voluntary leave of absence from his position.”
Vice-president Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana has been asked to act as president in the interim.
Additionally, all members of staff mentioned in the report who will need to give evidence at the commission and are likewise put on special administrative leave.
The members of staff so affected are Mumble, Lindile ‘Ace’ Kika, Adeel Carelse and Barney Kujane.
Former CEO Lesley Sedibe and the former head of referees Steve Goddard will also be asked to give evidence and cooperate with the enquiry.
Pinky Lehoko has been appointed acting CEO in the interim.
Nonkonyana said: “This is a difficult situation for the association, and for those who have been named in the report.
“We hope that there will be no speculation about their presumed guilt or otherwise. We need to allow the investigation to take place speedily and fairly, so those that are innocent can be separated from those who are not.”

Physical conditioning for all sports tasks is of paramount importance. And I'll definitely support Mr. Goka calls for a Spartan-like physical regiments to prepare the Black Stars' boys.
Of course, the physical conditioning and proper nutrition should match up the training program. Appointments of dieticians and nutritionists should not be overlooked.
The technical group of our National Teams should also include Sport Scientists,Psychologists, Physio-Therapists and Doctors who must monitor the boys and record their parameters for study and analyses.

Koo Nana and Egya Pa, your points including the points of the writer are well noted; on the contrary, it seems most of you are forgetting the fact that most of our national players ply their trades in abroad. The Black Stars players don't reside in the country for them to have this corporate military training. About 90% of them play in oversees. They acquire their training there and have well equipments that prepare them through matches. Even their diets are well monitored. When a player lacks stamina, there are resources in their club, that if only such a player is willing to gain stamina, could use and get the result.
How many big and tall players FC Barcelona has? Look at the players from Real Madrid, how many of them are big and tall like the Malian forwards the article is referring to? Let us take a good look at the Spanish squad that won the European 2012. How did we see them? To me, it is not about how big and or tall a player is. One has to have the common sense of the game. Have the skills, the stamina, the sharpness in decision making on the field and have a mental toughness and you will be able to fit into any squad.
Naturally, we Ghanaian in structure-wise, are smallish. Allow me to pick the same player the writer referred to, Solomon Asante as my example. What possible diet could you give to this player for him to be extra tall? Nothing! He can be overweight, for that I know; however, will that help him, I don't think so. The bulling we received from the other countries' players wasn't the cause of our structure but the cause of our low mental toughness. In this area, yes, military training will help but size wouldn't matter. Asase Jay, Papa Arko and the rest were not big and tall but they survived in this beautiful game. They had the talents and had the mental toughness that took them places. They didn't involve themselves in any military exercise.
For this military training, it could only work for the local players since majority could be at one place at the same time to participate. For our foreign players, this military preposition wouldn't work for them. The time these players would have during their invitations to honor national assignments wouldn't be enough for such a military exercise. Moreover, these foreign players already have materials probing them for toughness in the individual clubs. When a player is not tough, he chooses not to be one because their clubs have all the vital equipment to make them tough.
Therefore, I'll agree with Mr. Frank Goka and others who think this article is a good piece if only he could introduce this process with the local teams. He could begin with the teams taking part in the African club championships. That is where all the players are locally based. Besides, that is the fundamental arena to recruit from into the Black Stars. For anything to begin, it has to star from there. For us to see how effective or any result from his remedy, Mr. Goka will need to initiate or implement this idea in the local clubs but not the Black Stars.
Yes, it is a good business proposal but it seems Mr. Goka is missing his main clients. In other words, he is targeting the wrong market or the wrong customers. Unless his intention is to get a position in the GFA, where the big money is.
Which is which, Mr. Goka?

Strength, no doubt, matters but it is not acquired through side. I'm certain you know what I mean. One could be thick-tall and still wouldn't have strength. It is automatic that one with size has strength. Do not let us be confuse about that.
By the way, I don't remember saying strength is not needed is football. I will go back and read my comment again for I'm certain I didn't say anything like that. What I said was the players ply trades in oversees and therefore, gathering them for this military exercise wouldn't work. Besides, they have their own instruments that help them to get stamina and that keep them to get fit. Therefore, if this Goka man has anything, he should implement it on the local players especially, those playing the African Club Championship tournaments.
Like you mentioned, "you can get away with being small if your skills and speed are significantly superior to most players."
If you read my comment to the end I believe I used the Spanish National Team in conjunction with this same point you made. Therefore, I believe in the skills more than the size. If the AFCON is to be played with the European referees as the officials, Solomon Asante wouldn't have had a problem getting his opponents to be taken out of games. Watch the contacts in the European leagues and compare that to the AFCON tournaments. In AFCON, the players are not protected by the referees and that is why when the players participate in this tournament, they go home with all kinds of injuries.
So now tell me, do you think Solomon Asante needs to be thick-tall for him to survive in this profession? No! Unless he decides to ply his trade in only the African continent. On the other hand, do you think he needs skills and speed? O yes! He can't advance in this sport without it.
Now, Solomon Asante is in Ghana, and this Goka's theory may work on him for he needs stamina and strength, which military training is known for. Besides, his club may not have the tools to shape him to be tough. Zambia used it and it helped them during the 2012 AFCON and it is still helping then now. Their coach is a physical trainer and therefore, took them through this exercise. Did it help them this year, I mean during the 2013 AFCON? The answer is no because the strategies used by the coach wasn't right. You don't build your team on only stamina and strength. You have to have the ball sense as well. Your mapping, meaning technical and tactical inputs have to be right there as well.
Don't forget a club in Ghana, Liberty Professional, has the facility that contains these resources. I know few, I just don't have the names in mind, including Liberty that have those equipment. Players from Liberty professional, for instance, I don't see why they should lack stamina; however guess what, they do. All is because the instructors are not there to take these players through these training.
If Mr. Goka is ready to take this program upon his shoulders, he should first begin with the local players in the local clubs but not the Black Stars who come for assignments with only two weeks maximum available. That is my point.

WELL DONE EGYA PA, AND WELL DONE SLIMZAY. FRANK GOKA WROTE PROFUSELY LIKE MANY OTHERS RECENTLY. I BELIEVE THIS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE CASE IF ONLY PAINTSIL WERE NOT INJURED, AND WAKASO NOT SUBSTITUTED, AND GHANA HAD WON AFCON13. ALL THESE BOYS WOULD HAVE BEEN DEEMED VERY FIT AND TALNENTED AND HEROIC AND AKWASI APPIAH CARRIED ON THE SHOULDER FROM ACCRA TO KUMASI! ONE CONTRIBUTOR MADE REFERENCE TO THE ROYAL MOROCCAN MILITARY TEAM TO DIFFUSE GOKA'S CLAIMS. WE ARE A CHRISTIAN COUNTRY PREDOMINANTLY AND OUR MUSLIM BROTHERS ALSO PRAY. YET BLACK STARS ARE FOR A LONG TIME PLAGUED BY FRIENDLY-FIRE OF THE 5TH DIMENSION: ESSIEN GAVE A BREAK, HE IS NOW WELCOME; KPB SUDDENLY STOPPED; THE AYEW BROTHERS MADE THE INTERNATIONAL FRENCH PRESS TAKE THE GHANAIAN COACH AKWASI APPIAH FOR AN UNGRATEFUL PERSON. BUT THE TRUTH IS IN THE HEARTS OF THESE DEPENDABLE PLAYERS WHOM AT CRUCIAL MOMENTS IN THE HISTORY OF THE BLACK STARS DEFAULTED! ALSO INJURY, INJURY, INJURY, IN CRITICAL TIMES FOR THE BLACK STARS BEAT MY MIND MANY A TIME. I REMEMBER WRITING THAT THE GHANA-TUNISIA PRE-TOURNAMENT FRIENDLY WAS TOO CLOSE TO THE OPENING MATCHES, FOR FEAR OF INJURIES. HELAS, THEY CAME FOR ANNAN, BOAKYE-YIADOM AND ADOMAH WHO LATER PLAYED A PART. LET US NOT ALLOW THE TEARS OF SADNESS ABOUT THE 4TH POSISION(WHICH IN ITELF IS NOT A DISCRACE, EXCEPT THAT OUR NIGERIAN FRIENDS PIPPED US TO THE TROPHY)NOT BLILD US TO WHAT STILL IS GOOD IN THE BLACK STARS AND GHANA FOOTBALL, AND LET US LOOK FORWARD UNDAUNTEDLY WITH HOPE AND GREATER DETERMINATION. YES, WE NEED MORAL DISCIPLINE AND PATRIOTISM IN OUR PLAYERS TO CARRY ON IN VICTORIES. LOCAL COACH AKWASI APPIAH HAS DONE HIS BEST, BUT HAS ALSO LEARNT LESSONS FROM AFCON13 FOR TOMORROW. OUR BLACK STARS MUST LEARN FROM THE GREAT ADEBAYOR OF TOGO WHAT REAL SELFLESSNESS AND PATRIOTRISM TO COUNTRY IS! YES, WE NEED MORAL DISCIPLINE, AND SOME DYING FOR THE MOTHERLAND, TO BRING JOY TO THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE OF GHANA! ALL THE BEST TO LOCAL COACH AKWASI APPIAH, MAXWELL KONADU, THE TECHNICAL TEAM, AND GHANA BLACK STARS OF GHANA FOR STRENGTH, FITNESS, WISDOM AND MORE VICTORIES!

All we want as a nation is to win ,yes every body will love to win when it comes to sports, but if i may ask? is win the only result in sport? let me ask if we really thought other countries were there just to dance on the fields? its hard time we grow up to understand the fact that football is not played with the mouth or played on the mind, its a 90 minutes thing, do you know the kind of trainings players pass through before the season begins for them in their? i just have petty for our country, its a big Shame to have people just always speaking towards how and who or what should have been than just because we did not win , ask your self questions, did you folks think Nigeria was the best team that prepared well for the tournament? or Zambia as well did the same to win last year, its a very big shame reading all this crap of sending players to military camps. lets grow up and think like civilized people for heaven seek, football its about win ,loose or draw.

Our players are more interested in having wicked hair cuts and coming out with new dance when a goal is scored.
The players need to change their mentality that until the final whistle the game is not over. Wakaso was more interested in personal glory than team glory. Do you call that physique and stamina.
What we need are players who are committed and hungry for honors.

Frankie, you are partly right. The Ghana Black Stars could play better if they had more stamina. However, the crux of the problem is the coach. How many scoring stategies were rehearsed by the coach? Does Kwasi Appiah have at least 10 scoring stategies in his game book? No, everything was left to chance. What about playing zones until we fail to closely mark our opponents near or goal posts? Defensive strategies work best if players are taught how to read any game and come up quickly with their own strategies to outplay their opponents. An overwhelming attacking game always forces opponents to play a defensive game. Look, Stamina is only one third of the promblems facing the Blackstars. 1. The coach needs further traning to read games in substituting players without playing favorites. 2. Changing the our style of play based on the type of opponents we face.
3. Practising at least 10 scoring strategies in addition to penalty kicks during pratice sections.
4. Last but not the least, invite 4 best players for each position and form 4 teams before the world cup. Let them all justify their inclusion in The Best Black Star team of 11.

I think you are right. When Ghana qualified for our first ever world cup the boys were hefty looking with muscled thighs not the akoko (chicken) thighs we see today. I would go for muscle building the gym way (no steroids). When Ghana won the 1978 African Cup of Nations, again the boys were hefty. They trained in Brazil and not Dubai or UAE. The handlers lined up premier teams (those days division 1)one for each half to face the same players of the Black Stars. Each of those teams ended up getting 2-0, 3-0, or 4-1. The same set of players never lost a match. All this was meant to toughen the players. The rest is history. Trial matches must be well chosen for physical fitness tests. When the players are playing to the set pattern then we can have hope that they would not be out muscled by our opponents.

You have genuine plans for the black starts and your heart is in the right place. Well done, but how many days would you have as the national team coach to build these boys when they are spread all over the continent earning their bread.
The problem with National team coaching is the time available to the coaches to work with their players before a tournament. This is one of the problems why the so called 'big names’ in world-football are able to take the coaches to task. One of the key task is to solve the problem of not being able to get our football resources into the team and then onto the pitch. Look at the display Muntari and KVP put on in today’s game against Barcelona. We missed out on Andre and Jordan and Essien. As a national team we need to be able to assemble the best quickly to the various tasks. We have to find that fine balance between how these players are able to look after their careers and also contribute whole heartedly to the national team without hindrances to either party (player self-interest and national-interest balance). So we should be looking at the best ways to man-manage the platers we have. The national team coach has to dwell on the tactical plan for games based on the strengths of the players available to them as opposed to the opponents’ strengths. The players will be available to the national team when the GFA coaxes them well and man-manages them appropriately. I believe it is always an honour when called upon to serve ones nation and I am confident they players are proud of these call-ups too. But they always have to balance their commitment to the national team as well as looking after their careers. The nation should be treating her heroes and looking after them. Give them the sense that when they commit to the national course, they wouldn’t be abandoned when they get old or their bodies wilt out. Have we as a nation been doing this? We can start of by giving the likes of past heroes the opportunity to earn good bread for themselves and their families by employing them in roles such as has been given to JAA. When we do all these the good results will follow because we would have dedicated personnel to run our national teams from the under-16s levels right to the very top both in gents and ladies football, and not only football but in other sporting disciplines as well. Until then lets forget about puting on a good show at sporting events much more to winning anything!!!

Sack Kwasi Appiah, bring in the best available coach and give him what he wants to manage tghe Black Stars.
We have the material in terms of good players. We also have very good backroom staff who have largely been responsible for the results achieved under Appiah. The problem is that Appiah is not a qualified coach, lacks tactical acumen and experience coaching and winning trophies.
Bring in Sellas Teeteh, a qualified coach with proven experience and achievement at WAFU, African and World U20 level. Moreover, there would be continuity as some of the U20 World cup winning team are in the Black Stars.

Not too convinced about the content but I have to admit that the language is as good as I have seen on Ghanaweb. With regards to how the Black Stars can bring the World Cup to Ghana in 2014, am not at all convinced that what he suggests is the be all and end all when it comes to winning a World Cup, it takes much much more than training on the Shai Hills. Yes, being in prime physical condition does help but then, a team also needs the required technical proficiency, the skill factor, tactical nous and a huge chunk of luck, among other factors, to land the World Cup. I am not by any stretch of imagination saying Ghana cannot win the WC, am just saying that a lot of factors have to come together at the same time for the BS to achieve that.

Fubding is not a problem because the Government has always supported the Black Stars. The only problem is that when somebody is put in charge of the team he tends to be miopic in his selection. No long term plan but usually short sighted and giving favours instead of going for quality. Select on merit and gradual success will follow. Remember coach that you will not be coach for ever.

Some of us knew the Black Stars headed by Akwasi Appiah didnot have what it takes to win a trophy.
1. It had a head coach who hadn't been tried and tested
2. It had a captain who didn't know which career to pursue. Football paid him well but his heart was in music and dance
3. The coach, it appeared had an axe to grind with some players
4. The coach in his career was a defender and was therefore going to be defensive minded, we saw it
4. Tactically, he, the coach, was
bankrupt
5. He didn't need the AFCON to try his tactics, because the stakes were too high.
6. He had been an assistant to 3 previous coaches who all had the same approach "the one goal project" and so he was bound to follow suit.
7. Niger was the weakest link in that group so it wasn't a real test
8. What is going to change if he is retained? Nothing, the same heartaches for Ghanaians. Don't bet your hopes on the Black Stars. It is always going to be chop time at tournaments not results. Ghana has talent but like England, coaching and interferance is the problem

Get these sports men and women from the north and see whether they will not win. Height in modern day sports can not be ignored. Keep these short Ashantis in the game and Ghana will never win the big ones.
