Ghana is at a crossroads and we need a transcendental leader to get us all on board the train towards modernization and economic take-off.
Kamel Ataturk did it in Turkey;Lee Kuan Yew did it in Singapore;Tunku Abdul Rahman did it in Malaysia and Deng Xiaoping did it in China.
The first three were opposed by reactionary and violent forces who tried assasination attempts(as Mate Meho-NLM and UP did in the Gold Coast and Ghana)to scuttle economic development and modernization in those countries. And all three leaders passed security laws to protect their states.(Preventive Detention laws were passed in Malaysia and Singapore).
Today, the citizens of thee countries heap praises on their transcendental leaders - for transforming their societies.
Past and present leaders of Ghana(aside from Nkrumah)had/have no vision. Most came in as ordinary poor folks and ended up as multimillionaires(Rawlings& the Kufuor brothers). In addition to the hundreds of thousands of $$ made through his "frequent flier" privileges(per diem),Kufuor wanted ex gratia comprising of $1million for his foundation,$500,000 start up money, four expensive new cars, two 4x4SUV's,two new houses(to go to his heirs after death),drivers, maids, gardener, free utilities and gasoline for the cars and paid for vacation yearly - for two. And we have under- tree-schools and hospitals breaking down.Oh,African politicians!
What does Price say about his party and favorite politicians, including Akufo-Addo?
Mahama won't be any different. He's not a transformational leader like Nkrumah. He will maintain the status quo since he owns his political future to the elites in his party and the chiefs(he bought them 4x4s).He will spend the rest of his term looking over his shoulders - to see who's planning to dislodge him. Infact,he has no planned vision for the country. It will be touch and go as usual. And Akufo-Addo at Flagstaff House will even be worse. So the beat goes on.
It makes sense economically to remove the subsidies, albeit, politically unpalatable. The economy cannot sustain it in the long run and the consequences of it buckling under, will be even more devastating to the poor.
The NDC government under Mahama, failed to explain to the people(before the removal) why the subsidies needed to be scrapped. Of course,in light of the profligate spending by the government($50,000 housing allowance for each of the dishonorable MPs,and 4x4s given to the chiefs),how could they look into the face of the public and tell it the truth?
It has been repeatedly said that all politicians, especially the present crop(NDC,NPP)are the same - and that's the naked truth.Rawlings, after his first coup was in the best position to upend the status quo;abolish chieftaincy;throw away all cultural encumbrances that fetter modernization;separate church from state;and institute new laws to protect all citizens and properties - like Ataturk did in Turkey. But he was so naive and ignorant, had no vision, was drunk with power and lost the best opportunity to move Ghana from the backwater into a first class nation like Singapore.
Some of us are still waiting for a transcedental and revolutionary leader - to lead us to the Promised Land.

You want us to believe that the government's reason for increasing fuel prices is smuggling across the orders? Where did you get that notion? Don't you think it is more complex than that? And do you think this activism of yours is what will improve governance in Ghana? I very much doubt it professor.

It's unthinkable that government has finally removed the subsidy on fuel in a country where income levels are pitiably low and most ghanaians are consigned to a life under the poverty line. Experience has taught us that any increase in the price of petroluem products has an uncomfortable cascading effect on the price of every product and service so the decision by the government to jack up prices soon after the presidential election is unwise and a stab in the back of the majority poverty stricken ghanaians.
Subsidies in Ghana have a history. When we chose the path of socialism after independence we were rewarded with low income levels and government provided subsidies as a safety net/cushion for the poor. Income levels have stagnated over the years and with all the government sponsored subsidies many ghanaians have continued to live in abject poverty. This is the reason for the mass exodus of ghanaians to greener pastures wherever they can be found under the sun.
Our huge budget deficit is the result of too much waste in the system. There are too many people being paid for doing too little or nothing. Besides there're too many ghost names on the government payroll.
Seriously speaking,in the absence of huge budget surplus does it make any sense at all for the president(from $4,240 to $6,357 a month, tax free) , parliamentarians(from $2,225 to $3,800 a month), ministers($4,770 a month) , etc, to increase their salaries when most people can hardly afford one square meal a day? The president and his over privileged class of ghanaians have many juicy benefits including cars, a house with staff and entertainment allowance. The paltry monthly minimum wage is $75 while civil servants like teachers earn below $500 a month.
If the government has to begin an austerity program then it must start from the top not from the most vulnerable at the bottom of the income ladder by taking away their safety net. They have betrayed ghanaians.
Zip it 4 the gov't is fair.
