This is a well-written essay but shallow in content. How is it that the NPP has allowed itself to be branded as an elitist party? The author may need to address this question. As things stand now, the party is allowing itself to be be destroyed having clearly lost an election; its current contradictory manner in dealing with parliament beats the minds of every rational political theory. Come next election, all the NDC needs to do is point out how NPPist shabbily treated the president not because of principle but because he comes from the northern part of the country. Once the north , and central, and Volta are won, the NPP is again left to fight for greater accra and their stronghold. I am a symparthizer of the NPP; the Kuffuor administration did some good things especially during the first term but the party at at now lacks any credible political strategy to win a general election. A major party cannot run to the supreme court for it to deliver to her an election.

This is well written and argued but not at all impartial.
It is true that the NDC is not what it is really saying it is and is just posing but to say that the NPP is a grass-roots party and people based is to depart from the truth. Actually, NPP wants to be those things you ascribe to it but in reality, it is not. It has failed to be that!
Yes, parties transform and the NPP is not exactly like its tradition but it is ingenuous to try to cut the party completely away from its forebears. It still has some elements of those age-old characteristics - both the good and the bad.
But the place you completely spoiled your write-up is when you so blatantly pitch for Akufo-Addo. Then I remembered your name is Ofori-Atta. You give the man too much credit at a time when the NPP desperately needs someone who is NOT Akufo-Addo. If he doesn't win the Supreme Court case and become president now, he will be 72 going into 2016. No matter if Abdoulaye Waye was president at an older age, 72 will be too much for Akufo-Addo to be seeking the presidency. His party may like him but many other non-NPP Ghanaians are not willing to vote for him. They will add his advanced age to all the negative things they have invented about him.
And if the NPP subscribes to democratic principles as you claim, then the candidature should be open to any party member who is qualified to contest for it without any pre-voting arrangements that weigh the contest in favour of one man before even the first votes are cast - as happened the last time around. Surely NPP has someone else more Ghanaians than die-hard NPP fanatics can rally around? Akufo-Addo is not that man!

Having read your article,I have come to the conclusion that you are either narrow minded or totally blinded by your party affiliation.I can not say which one u are!!
It is good to name people who aged in their leadership of their countries, but what you did not point out was whether they brought these countries out of poverty, hunger, corruption, debt etc etc, or whether these people sent these countries down the road of poverty, hunger, drought, debt and corruption.
You being a former student leader means 'Jake shit'to the hungry people in ghana.
You talking about the Rawlings era means 'Jake shit' to those who lived during the Nkruma era who would also recollect the stories of people being fed to lions at flag staff house, and the house arrest people were put under.Read the biography's of Nkruma and Colonel Bernasko.
Look here Mr Ofori-Atta, what ghanaians want is a selfless man or woman who true to their words want to help the people of this country.
You can argue heaven and earth and be party partisan, but when you have a goverment in power/ a ruling goverment(the NPP)who would send uneducated bastards to represent our country to negotiate on subjects and issues which they have no 'Jake shit' idea or clue about, then we as a country are in trouble. If the NPP wants to be tribal about issues, then let us ghanaians remind them that we are all not ashanti's.
That is why we can give prominence to a man like Kofi Wayo who from nowhere now wants to rule in the country,(i am yet to determine which state in the usa his accent belongs to).
No goverment in the developed countries or what we term as the developed countries refers to or blames goverments that were in office twenty or more years ago for their hardship. They would rather look at the immediate past and move on.
That is why you can hear the Prime Minister of the uk calls the BBC stupid and yet it is not leading news.
What we call news is really disturbing, so when I read articles by people like you, I am baffled.
YOU MIGHT AS WELL ASK THE OUT GOING POPE TO STAY ON!!! OR MUGABE TO RULE TILL DEATH!!!, what next.
People like you hide behind words like ideology/Nkrumaist/Rawlingsm/Busiast and go on naming them, to come up with your BIG FAT BULL SHIT...

You make your arguments so eloquently and though I do not necessarily share your views, they are nonetheless well put. But, and a very big but: You completely forget that somehow, the NDC that you so discredit and argue 'have falsely and fraudulently hijacked' the ' mantra' seem to have persuaded a sizeable number of the population to come to their cause as evidenced in the election outcome. Surely you cannot blame the NDC for the weak and poor leadership and lack of national appeal of the so-called "smaller Nkrumahist parties".
For one thing, the CPP under Ndoum and latterly under Samia Nkrumah has failed to attract national interest and traction. It is seen by some to be inherently weak with too much in-fighting and yes, for power thus culminating in Ndoum, their main 'financier' leaving to form yet another 'fringe' party - the PPP. The PNC similarly lacks national appeal and is only moderately strong in a few constituencies. It is in my view, also very unbalanced and seen by some as mainly a party run by people from the northern parts of Ghana (rightly or wrongly). It is also clear to me that even the PNC current leadership is divided, disloyal and corrupted by other parties not least the NPP itself as evidenced by the attitudes and utterances and actions of the their chairman and his son, who seem to work more for the NPP than the PNC.
If you are lamenting the fact that the Nkrumahist parties are not playing their proper role or have not realised the vision of Nkrumah who was afterall a 'ONE NATION' visionary for Ghana (and Africa) then you are right, but don't blame NDC and 'it's press' or "media programmes" for that. I agree with you, merely professing to be an Nkrumahist party does not translate into being truly Nkrumahist and may be the Mills-Mahama presidency has yet to prove its credentials in this regard.
However you will agree with me that for all his faults and "18 years' misrule" as you put it, I seem to recall that president Rawlings was the first to restore Nkrumah's image and pride of place in our beloved country and can be credited with e.g. The Mausoleum and Museum and other attributes of Nkrumah.
By the way, why are you not lamenting the fact that under the NLC and Progress Party government that followed it after Nkrumah's in my view 'wrongful' overthrow in 1966, the CPP and anything Nkrumah was BANNED from our political discourse, intellectual activity including even research (except where the research was meant to discredit him) even in our University history and political science departments? And who was in charge of the history department at the University of Ghana at the time? None other than "Knotnonpiat" himself - Prof. Adu Boahen, a stalwart and co-founder of the NPP and one of the staunchest anti-Nkrumahists of our time. How do you expect the true Nkrumahist parties to have grown and maintained his initial momentum and one-nation popular focus? Would you therefore agree with me that the 'precedents' of the present day NPP had a direct role in diminishing and almost destroying not just Nkrumah's vision and philosophy for the CPP and other Krumahist parties? Just think about it objectively.
That Nana Akufo Addo is a democrat in the terms you describe him is fine by me. I also happen to believe from his own biography that in his student days, he was a staunch Nkrumahist and that in a way attracted me towards him and I happen to believe that 'once an Nkrumahist, always one' therefore were he to become president, I want to believe he would be more sympathetic in that direction (but with the current climate and behaviour of his party faithful, I can no longer be too sure of that).
That said, you completely miss the fact that Ghanaians somehow have tended to favour the NDC, even with the dwindling influence of Rawlings. Indeed some of his supporters were even punished by the party, something I am happy about, to let them know that just because they are affiliated to Rawlings doesn't make them special or above the law or party discipline. It is a relief for me to see that a party like the NDC is fast ridding itself of Rawlings and the disgraceful and undemocratic actions of his wife, Nana Konadu who has been rightly punished just so they all know that yes, you may start a party but 'one person does not make a party' nor must they be so domineering.
I'd like to point out to you that it is a very dangerous thing to think that only certain people with the type of personality and acumen you ascribe to Nana Akufo Addo are best suited to rule or run the affairs of a country. It is the unwisest thing ever to do. For we all have a very short lifespan, but nation states and governments will continue to evolve and develop till thy kingdom come. Those who believed that 'Nkrumah never die' woke up to the fact that he had been booted out of office, and his power and influence were diminished overnight. What is lasting and relevant is the contribution that a person makes and what they leave for posterity. Krumah in his wisdom, WROTE extensively and for some of us, we have only come to know him through his writings and now belong to his school of thought or philosophy. I wonder how many of the people you so admire have made such accounts of their own work and philosophy including Nana Addo? Can you point to any of our past leaders who has been so effective and / or influential to their generation and the young ones in Ghana, let alone Africa and indeed the rest of the world? Do you know how many biographies scholars the world over have written of Nkrumah? Even far more than most leaders through history and in the West!
Finally, if we want our nation to develop, I admonish you to think more objectively and argue on the merits of what each one of us irrespective of party affiliation can contribute to our national development, good governance and our prosperity. In my considered view, no single party or individual holds the keys to our national fortunes, nor is any particular group or party more qualified to 'make our nation great and strong'. It is therefore insulting for anyone to make their arguments based on that very premise without credible evidence to support it. That approach in my view only serves to divide, rather than unite us.

For the many years that the 'Alhaji and Alhaji' weekend radio talk show has been serving as the flagship propaganda platform of the NDC it has never failed to replay the speeches of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah before, during and after the show. This is backed by old CPP songs which serve as the main tune of the show.
What is more of concern is the consistent invocation of the 'matemeho-people' description by panellists of the show as part of efforts to effect a negative restructure of the public image of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its leaders". " By 2000 the NPP has emerged as a " National Party" . Is it now accepting its exclusivity?

Your feature article is so impressive and very factual. The name Ofori-Atta has a long history of intellectual acumen, wisdom and truly independent mind. Some ghanaians, you know as well as I do,hate the truth perhaps as a result of allergies they have developed over the years for the truth by associating with people who are avowed haters of truth and unrepentant sadists.
The NPP, though erroneously labeled as elitist, is the only party in Ghana that truly believes in true democracy, the rule of law and order and development of the human resource of the nation to its fullest potential. The 8 years of NPP administration bear more than adequate testimony of what the NPP stands for as a party.
The NDC came to power 4 years ago at a time oil had just been discovered and the outgoing NPP administration had introduced many social intervention programs and had resuscitated the ailing economy bequeathed to it by the Rawlings led NDC administration to a middle income status. No administration in the history of the nation has ever had it so good with the expectations of the luxury of an oil rich economy. Expectations were very high for the new Mills led NDC administration and many ghanaians were highly optimistic of a heavenly future,at least for our ghanaian standards. On assumption of office they quickly embarked on a borrowing spree and borrowed more money from external sources than all previous administrations put together. The newfound national swagger and optimism soon evaporated into thin air whilst ghanaians witnessed the hurried dismemberment of the social intervention programs.
Whenever the NDC is in power there is a breakdown in law and order with footsoldiers seizing toilets, lorry parks, ransacking the offices of DCEs and never ever receiving even a slap on the wrist.
The country naturally endowed with oil, gold and diamond is now broke and the Mahama administration has responded with the removal of the subsidy on petrol, the safety net for low paid ghanaian workers. What about the growing corruption in high places? What about the settlement of dubious judgement debts to cronies out of court? What about the administration buying imported finished petrol when we have the Tema Oil Refinery and we produce crude oil at home?
This NDC party is like the Republican party of America. Whenever they are in power they increase the national deficit. Clinton wiped out the deficit left by the outgoing Bush senior administration and left a huge surplus. Enters George Bush junior in 2000 and he wipes out the huge surplus and bequeaths a huge deficit by the time he was leaving office in 2008.The NDC has done sufficient damage in 4 years and we can't afford another 4 years of kleptocracy and ineptitude.
They are lost in the woods n are just making noise 2b heard. 2012 elections that they lost with all their lies is still hunting them to their grave.
