Certainly,Ghana's economy is not heading towards an upward trajectory but rather has become stagnant and imperilled by government overspending and a bloated bureaucracy.
Kufuor handed Egya Atta a sick economy that was hampered by corruption, inflated contracts(and those intentionally cancelled were done with the sole purpose of collecting kickbacks in suits against the government("You chop,I chop" deals).Today,Kufuor and his brother form the richest family in Ghana.
The NDC government under Egya Atta should have gone after EO Group's $2billion ripoff. As it is now,the government's weakness has allowed the top echelon of the NPP and EO to laugh all the way to Cayman Islands and Swiss banks - while KATH and TOR go broke.
Yours truly endorses Opoku-Boateng's prescriptions to stall the economy's potential tailspin. In addition, all chiefs and pastors should be forced to pay taxes - and the ministry for Chieftaincy be abolished.
Pres.Mahama should go further and cut his staff by 50%.A smaller government should be a priority for this poor country.Soon, the Europeans and Americans will cut off funds for 40% of our budget. And the consequences will be catastrophic. We've got to live within our means.

Kuffour handed Mills the best economy in Africa in 2009. An economy that has grown from a 4 billion economy to 17 billion in 8 years is not a sick economy. Kuffour inherited Rawlings mess with a stagnant economy with 42% inflation and left MAHAMA with a growing economy. Within 4 short years, ndc has increased government salary expendicture from 2.5 billion a year to 7.5 billion without a corresponding productivity.
Kuffour left an economy where 50% of our budget was used for development projects. MAHAMA and Mills now spend only 10% for development projects.
Kuffour left an economy with only 9 billion deficit after inheriting 7.5 billion from Rawlings. Within a span of four years, our deficit has ballooned to 33 billion dollars with nothing to show for it.
Kuffour left a legacy of;
NHIS
NYEP
MASS TRANSPORTATION
FREE SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMME
MASLOC
BUI DAM
GEORGE BUSH HIGHWAY
PRESIDENTIAL PALACE

I imagine for a second that one can analyze the performance of our national economy without as much as considering global economic conditions that directly impact the economy for better or worse...
Dr.Ernest Boateng in his zeal to demonstrate his NPP bonafides, selectively highlights and illuminates basic economic shortcomings that he inexplicably attributes to incompetence, a bloated bureaucracy among other things...
Ghana's economy is in hobbling because it is intricately tied to the global economy....if one part of the world, especially the rich world is struggling to get its economy house in order, the rest of the world, the developing world for that matter, would bear the brunt.....any wonder that commodity prices are in a slump?
Ghana produces oil as Boateng asserts, but the daily output and the money it fetches on the international market are miniscule...nothing to fill our national coffers quick enough to solve our long and medium term problems....the false assumption by many in Ghana is that once a country starts producing oil, what comes next is huge mounds of foreign exchange....well, Boateng, it does not happen that way....it is a long process, and as annual production rates climb, so does the foreign exchange earnings...it normally takes a decade or two to see oil revenues blossom.....
The present sorry state of the economy has a lot to do with administrations past and present...pinning on one party is outrageous and grossly misleading

Mojingles, in as much as our economy is tied to the developed countries and is affected by global upheavals, developing countries are less affected by the global meltdowns due to the nature of our economies where we don't use credit systems in purchasing high dollar items like houses and cars.
Ghana was largely insulated from the global meltdown that started in 2007 when Ghana stock market though miniscule was the best performing stock exchange in the world.
The biggest problem facing Ghana now is the government expendicture on salaries that has ballooned our expenses and left little for deleopmental projects. In 2008, the governt salary and wages expendicture was 2.5 billion dollars which was close to 20% of the national budget. The implementation of the (SSSS), increase of Ministers, MP'S and Judges salaries including housing and car allowances have increased the wages and salaries to 7.5 billion dollars a year which is more than 60% of the national budget. With a debt of 33 billion attracting annual interest of close to four billion, little is left for the government to use for roads, water and electricity. Government salary has become the biggest problem facing Mahama's administration.

1. Is it true that the President does not pay income tax? I thought he did!!! If not, then that is an extreme injustice to all Ghanaians. But I think the President pays tax. All parliamentarians and political appointees pay tax. EVERYBODY must pay tax in Ghana and that includes all political appointees.
2. Oil is often now mentioned as one of our main income earners. My question to the writer is: how much revenue does the government earn from oil - from taxes and earnings? Does anybody know?
3. The writer is spot on on the over-bloated cabinet and public services. There are many offices that must be abolished. But how can the single-spine salary system now be abolished?
4. Transport allowances for ministers should be abolished. Our ministers and parliamentarians do not need car loans from government. They must take loans from the commercial banks if they want cars. Parliamentarians outside Accra should be given nominal housing allowances calculated on the days they need to be in parliament.
5. The population of the US is about ten times that of Ghana, not 100 times. Ghana is now about 25 million. What is 100 times that?
6. A good article, nonetheless, but it is more about cutting waste in the economy (which is important) than that the economy is in dire straits. Perhaps it is but I don't think the writer has given a way to get out of the predicament if all he has to suggest is cutting down waste.

I have always been telling the government not to' cross the red line' and i will keep stressing that. The government should simply not spend money that it has not got.Are we not learning from the causes of the economic meltdown in Europe and America? My layman's advice to the government is that borrowing to spend without any wealth creation is a disaster for the nation and must be avoided at all cost.Is it justifiable for the nation to spend 60 per cent of its revenue on workers' wages when their productivity level is almost zero?Is it justifiable for MPS and ministers to have rise in salaries and allowances when the economy cannot sustain such increases? Can the economy sustain so many ministerial positions? Is the government still presiding over a system which allows public sevants to embezzle or steal at least half of monies voted to run ministries and Departments? The government must act firmly and decisively to save the nation from economic bankruptcy.
