  Dr Afari-Gyan has presided over several elections with both major parties winning.
  
  Why would he want to favour one party over another? Even if he did would he be able to bend the results in favour of one party? He is the chair of the commission that conducts the election. He cannot, even if he so desired, change the outcome of an election. Our electoral system cannot be manipulated by an individual.

  Do you seriously believe that Mr Afari-Gyan mismanaged the election as you've tried to insinuate? Having voted in all the elections from 1992 to date, i can say on authority and without fear or favour that the 2012 election beats 'em all in transparency, fairness and credibility. A mere legal challenge by a defeated flagbearer -which by the way lacks legal and intellectual merit-should and must not take anything away from the credibilty of the 2012 elections. Nowhere in this world is purity or perfection in electoral matters achieved much less in a developing and evolving democracy as ours. In Afari-Gyan's place, most of his acerbic critics would flop miserably. I've little doubt that history will be kind to this illustrious son of Ghana who refused to genuflect before capricious dictators even in the face of threats and death.

  When stupid people like you come on the media and think along the lines of political affiliations it really pisses me off. You were happy with Afari Djan when Kuffour won his two terms in office, werent you? Do you think NDC supporters were happy with Afari Djan at that time? Typical NPP posturing. If we can win then nobody deserves to win. As if winning an election is your right and not a privilege that the electorate bestows upon you. If the constitution wasnt such that the EC chairman cant be removed by a president, do you think we would have had the peace the country enjoys now? Definitely every four years there would have been a new EC chairman or worse still one party will be in power for a long time because they have appointed a corrupt EC chairman. You NPP guys are so repulsive when one considers how every major political decision should be your way or the high way. Come to think of it i wont be surprised if the car Afari Djan drives now was a present from you when Kuffour won the elections.

  DKB, I do not consider myself as an NDC Contributor, neither do I think NDC also considers me as one of their Contributors. Both NDC and NPP members, supporters and sympathiser make allegations against me as being a member or supporter of the other. In reality I am neither. I have never been a member of any political party in Ghana or abroad. Here in the UK, I have been asked by both Conservative and Labour parties to become a member but I have said no to both. I vote both Conservative and Labour at national elections but mostly Conservative at local elections because my local Conservative Party is better at managing local services than Labour. I prefer not to be tagged so I can enjoy the freedom to be objective.

  Kofi, you've made some good suggestions. However, the chair and role of the country's EC has now become a 'poisoned chalice'. And I wonder how many decent people will take up that position after the scathing and virile criticism of Dr Afari-Gyan. The conduct of the just ended Presidential election, and the legal challenge to the results by NPP have all but made the position an interesting challenge.
  
  Interstingly, per Ghana's constitution, it's the President that appoints the chair of the EC. The reality is, it will be unthinkable for an NDC Govt/President to appoint a person perceived to have any form of inclination to the opposition. Your guess is good as mine when the President decides to appoint a new EC chairperson. Can any preferred candidate for the position be considered politically impartial or neutral?
  
  The EC in its current form is dysfunctional. It needs to be re-structured and be made more accountable to the nation as an independent and impartial regulator, and not the party in power. The funding of the EC should be looked at as it commits the EC to the Government/party in power.

  Kofi, I am surprised that you who is held in high esteem by your writings is starting to be buying into the lies. If I were you I will open my mind and wait until the end of this case and you will see who is going to be held high esteem and those who are going to be disgraced. To me Mr. Afari Ghan is one of the few Ghanaians who have to be honoured. We should not wait after his death before we talk about his incorrutibility. He has done marvelously well in Ghana over the years. Please just exercise a little bit of patience and this case will unravel and some individual(s) will never recover and even their children will continue their heads in shame whenever their fathers names are mentioned. Kofi Atta just exercise patience. I urge rather to follow the case closely with an open mind.

  Well said Sir. I also hold the view that, it is unlikely that Dr Gyan would have been involved personally in any acts of wrong doing. However, there are some indications, that things would have to be tightened in future, to instill confidence in the nation as a whole. Lessons must be learnt.

Definetly Mahama's NDC and Afari-Gyan to help NDC win 2012 elections. Although seven members make up the commission, the buck stops with the commissioner just as we all can blame Mahama for the poor state of affairs;for a good 15 months before the demise of Mills, Mahama was the sole "President cum Vice President". Afari-Gyan was bought/bribed with cash ($35m ) and a house in New York besides his retirement package. Other commissioners must have received their shares. You need to know some of the circles Mahama operates in to know the amount of money he controls. He is a big thief and killer.

  Appointment of Electoral Commissioners is sole perogative of the President, from whichever party, in consultation with Council of State, and that's enough. If Kufour had had privilege to appoint he wouldn't have accepted any interference from any special commission. Iron-clad security of tenure makes who pays the piper unworkable where the EC is concerned. Chairman and commissioners only leave by retirement. Can't resign even if SC rules for petitioners, unless proven that commissioners physically altered votes. Polling booth results are accepted as sacrosanct. The problem is from collation centres and beyond. Points to police vigorously are Returning Officer to RegEC and RegEC to strongroom. Those two points must be policed to ensure nobody tampers with the collated results.

  An election hailed by the US, UK, France, Russia and China as one of the best organised in Africa has boosted Afari Gyans Image forever and I don't see how a 69year old bad loser or even the Justices sitting on the supreme court can take that away. Think about how Gbagbo fell and you would know the unmistakable importance of those countries in their collective in legitimising winners of democratic elections.
