It is not only Northern politicians who have disappoimted Ghanaians but all Ghanaian politicians. I do not think the North is much different from other regions like Brong Ahafo, Ashanti, and Western Region. In fact these regions are worse than the north in terms of Government projects/developments despite the resources generated from there. At present all politicians from these regions and the North acquire properties in Accra, leave their native districts and emigrate to Accra for good. Now they turn all their attention to the development of their new place of abode - Accra and they say "To HELL with the rest of Ghana, Accra we love thee". That is the reason why other regions are neglected and not only the North. By the way we should not forget that there are people who live further to our north eg Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger etc but they are ok.

Dont make that mistake. The north is not poor. Some of you will be surprised if you go there. Let us not deceive ourselves. You have to go there and see there so many very rich people there.

Right on! They are so intelligent the moment they make it financially or get power to improve the lot of Northerners, they move to Accra, Kumasi, Tema, Takoradi Obuasi and other towns but no where near Tamale, Bolga or Wa.

Black Africans are as good as whites in many human endeavours, academics, sports, music and indeed mineral and other natural resources, yet look at the condition of our countries and indeed the continent.
For example, when Kofi Annan was the UN Secretary General did his tenure stop conflicts in Africa? Yes, we have great minds from Northern Ghana, but many, many entrenched reactionary forces continue work against their progress as a people.

I don't know what their geographers tell them about the southern savanna stretching from from part of central region throught greater accra, some part of eastern to the southern part of volta region. In addition why should a civil servant with the same salary from the north think he is poor when his counterpart in the south with the same salary does not go about saying he is poor? this atittude of "we are poor" has been maintained by some just to justify the scholarship they enjoy.So u see again here that the guy from the south pays school fees from the salary he earns for his or her wards and his or her northern counterpart's child goes through secondary education wthout payin school and boarding fees, but he or she from the north comes out still saying "we are poor". what is the sense?

Poverty in the north is a myth. The average Northerner has believed this myth and so has become relaxed and lazy. They always claim they don't have mineral resources, enough rainfall and cocoa and that is why they are poor. This is not true. Infact the north may not have two seasons of rainfall like the south, the four months of rainfall they have in the north is more reliable than that of the south. The North also has large accumulation of industrial minerals like limestone, laterite and clay. This constitute 99% of all the ingredients needed to manufacture cement. Even though the north may not be endowed with the right soil to grow cocoa they have the time and space to grow other cash crops to generate income just like their kinsmen in Burkina Faso are doing to export onions, tomatoes, banana, oranges, potatoes, etc.
Let me give two scenarios to buttress my point. A woman in the upper east went to the hospital with a swollen finger which was giving her sleepless nights in the days of the cash and carry system. She was asked to pay a certain amount for her treatment. She complained that she had no money. Somebody who knew her retorted;... "but Ma you have many goats and guinea fowls, sell one and treat yourself". she replied and said, "should I sell my goat because of this small finger"? Is this woman really poor? Listen to another one. A man had many cattle running into hundreds. There was an outbreak of disease in another village and so people advised him to sell two or three cows and use the money to buy vaccine for the vaccination of the rest. He said he can't do that. He sat down and the disease cleared all his herd. Is that poverty? I think the following can also be blamed for the poverty myth. The Catholic Church, Islam, University fallacy and chieftaincy.
I am informed that in order to encourage people to come to church the then catholic church give out freebies like tobacco and pito on sundays. The Islamic religion inspires begging which is contrary to the African culture. 99% of nortern students study the arts and humanities and so there is no word like science and technical education in the northern dictionary. lastly, every Tom, Dick and Harry in Yendi is a potential chief and so they don't do any hard work.

The writer is well-intentioned, but he could done a better job of going back in time to examine British policies towards its northern territories in West Africa vis a vis the southern regions......policies were designed deliberately to keep the northern regions perpetually in poverty and as a source of labor for the mines and other heavy industries in the south....

When the British realized that this strategy was self-destructive, they attempted, however, belatedly to correct the inbalance between the regions...the effort to recalibrate the educational divide being a prime example....but industrial development in the north was woefully neglected.

There is ample evidence to show that governments have turned a blind eye to the sad state of affairs in the northern regions....the lack of funds is no excuse.....investments, domestic and foreign, are sorely the panacea to the problems of the north and not the abundance of educated folks, who most part, don't give a rat's ass about the people they represent.....

A thorough research into the issue by this pimple-faced youngster, Felix, would have done a whole world of good...but the poor guy started off on poor and false assumptions that have made the rounds for years about what is truly ailing the northern regions......
