Mr Alfa, we are all entitle to our opinions and the fact is that Ghana is a democratic country. Meaning the development of the country eschew every citizen to make a contribution in his or her own way.

Somehow, your article has tried to below Professor Martey's contribution to the on going saga of Government meddling into religious matters whereas currently the country is facing huge problems of supplying simple and basic needs of the population like water, social housing, electricity and infrastructure like school buildings. Not only that but the citizens health needs. It is rather unfortunate that the Professor's write up has being taken out of context by people who do not understand the undertone or the main theme of the article. Essentially and more meaningfully what all those who wrote against the Professor failed to ask is, why should the Government got itself involved in such activity? Whereas there are more heavy and pressing needs to attain for the country. Are Ghanaians not presently crying for simple water and electricity?

Did the people elect Mahama's Government to get people to Israel and Hajj by spending the country's little money? Certainly no and that is fact. The people elected Mahama's Government to ensure and to judiciously make use of the little resources to ensure free flow of simple water, electricity, and make available health needs and school places for all. No Developed Country in the world care about religious implementation of their citizens travelling to so called holy lands. In fact there is nothing call holy anything but, except the Almighty God or Allah. Why does it always have to be Third World Countries citizens that clamour for holy lands and that the Government in power must provide the necessary facilitation. This is insane. The present Government has no role at all to involve in such things of religious nature. Does the country has no Churches, does the Country has no Religious Bodies, it has, if then why cannot the Government focus on their manifestos which elected them into power? As far as I am concern the bain of Africa underdevelopment is the people themselves. For irrespective of their situation in life they will still demand from their government everything free. Not considering that Governments have little resources to cater for all.

But Mr Shaban Alfa and your colleagues who have tried to castigate Professor Martey did you not think, one knowing God or Allah is an individual obligation? Seemingly, if you lot do not know it then let me make it clear that it is. The Government cannot provide for you to got to Mecca, neither can the Government provide for a Christian to go to Israel. These are all 'INDIVIDUAL' wants. God did not make it compulsory in the Bible for me to visit the land of Israel and neither did Allah make it compulsory for a Muslim to visit Mecca. These are all human traditions. God is not a God of material things. God said in the Bible that "Man my ways are not your ways, and neither my Thoughts are your thoughts.

All in all Professor Martey's call for the NDC Government to focus on the objective of their election is completely right to all right thinking Ghanaians across the world.

I fully agree with you that the Profs comment was unnecessary. He commented on that which was not the subject for discussion at all. The subject was christian leaders going to Jerusalem and not on Muslim hajj. Even if government was paying for Muslims to go on hajj one would expect that religious leaders of the country would sit down and discuss whether it is right to use state resources to support religious pilgrimages. As you rightly made it clear, every Muslim is aware that the performance of the hajj is only for those who can financially afford to do so. Once a gain thank you for the good reasoning.

Due to politicization, many are those whose idea is that the NDC government pays to ferry muslims to Mecca every year. However, that is NOT A TRUE PICTURE. Some of them are helped by 'philanthropists' who are NDC and there is NOTHING WRONG about that.

If there is no element of sponsorship for he Hajj pilgrimage as you sought to make us believe, then lets leave it like that. Period! God bless Ghana

But because its coming from the leader of the family of presbytarians, he should try us much as possible to control his tongue so that radical Christians and moslems, which is a small minority won't take advantage to desturb the peace. When it comes to the propagation of Islam there are two schools of thought. One block led by Turkey believes that religion should be separated from politics. This is what has made turkey the most advanced Islamic country in the world. The other school of thought led by Saudi Arabia believes Islam cannot survive without the government. They dispense this policy selectively. In Europe and North America they dare not ask governments to facilitate Hajj pilgrimage but in third world countries they force governments to do this facilitation. The question I want to ask is 'can Islam survive without politics'?

I was not surprise of the comment of Prof. I recently attended a seminar on christian/muslim relationship and the Prof. gave the opening address. In the course of the seminar it came out that govt was going to sponsor christians to Israel and i was shock to see the Prof. with his usual ways of approach to issues,just said they wont accept and they will also ask govt to stop sponsoring muslims to pilgrimage. Infact the seminar was very educative as some participants were very happy to know the beliefs of muslims and how to relate with them in their variuos communities. So Mr. Prof. we beg dont sow seed of confusion between us as ghanaians and not muslim/christian matters.

I hope nobody will then fault the Reverend Minister then, because his statement was made out of lack of information. Government should be blamed, for it has created an impression of a "Government sponsored delegation" usually made up of opportunistic party loyalists, much to the annoyance of most of us, who felt that govt was wasting monies which could otherwise be used in even deprived communities, the Zongos included.

This clarification by Abdur is most welcome. SPONSORING IN ANY FORM IS BAD FOR OUR POLITICS, IT IS CALLED POLITICAL PATRONAGE AND LEADS TO CORRUPTION ... Let's allow sleeping dogs to sleep, for it is the well being of Ghana, that we all come out to criticize those who handle the national purse. Thanks, may Allah bless you ... !
