You got it right. Corruption, mismanagent and incompetence as well as lack of proper understanding of the airline industry led to the demise of Ghanair. A flight attendant on Ghana airways once told me most of the females had to sleep with anybody who was somebody in Ghana airways in order to get the job. You have government officials and their numerous girlfriends and cronies flying for free; relatives and friends of Ghana airways employees flying for free. I took a Ghana airways from Baltimore to Kotoka and excess luggage fees were collected with no receipts issued. The workers simply pocketed the amounts they collected. Ghana airways did not build any meaningful relationships with major international carriers like BA, KLM etc. The concept of service in a modern economy was not part of the vocabulary of employees of the defunct national airline.

Hundreds of their staff fly Ethiopian Airways around the world for flimsy excuses and at any cost to the so-called Union. Delta is not breaking even, even with the stupid charges on airfares to Ghana and Africa.

But the airfares have increase too high now for most people to fly..i've come to ghana 6 times since 2001 but have not been to my wife's home last year because the fares are way too high..before that i was getting consolidator tickets for $1100...Now my wife's sister had to pay $1800 on emirates last year for 1 way..until fuel prices drop they will loose money and customers..And delta did buy oil refinery last year in Penn state (philly) that was about to be closed..so they will make jet fuel and trade whatever petro and deisel in made for jet fuel in other cities..Much better than TOR huh!

Yes, Ethiopian Airlines you are the BEST in Africa. SA and Kenya Airways don't even come close considering war and famine years ago. The late President, Meles Zenawi was a visionary and a strong leader, though he had his faults. He reminded me of our own, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of blessed memory.
However, with strong teamwork, dedication and hard work among all the 6,300 brave men and women of the airline, it has made a successful financial year.

Captain Amsale Gualu, is the first Ethiopian female pilot. Very impressive indeed. Check this out, the airline flies to 41 cities in Africa. They also fly to Europe, USA Brazil and Asia. Total Operational Fleet=48 Aircraft. Fleet on Order: 42 Aircraft (2 Boeing Dreamliner787 in service, but grounded by FAA)the third Dreamliner787 to delivered in June 2013.

I hope we can all learn from the Ethiopian Airline experience. It takes a village to make anything work in Ghana. The culture of corruption, thievery, laziness and incompetence must stop.

And then ask any financial institution if they are willing to lend it money and you will see the answer. Sure, if it were to run into trouble, it *may* get bailout from the Ethiopian government, but currently, it is a huge profit center.

I believe Ghana Airways can be revived to do a better job if the government is serious and corruption as well as mismanagement of our public institutions cease! Today it is Ghana Airways! Tomorrow it may be Electricity Corporation or what have you!
Let's wake up to hold our governments responsible even about how they privatize our public institutions.
