Your suggestion that people should start joining debating clubs is laudable. In fact, I believe since 'charity begins at home', our parents and elders should start inculcating the mindset of tolerance of dissenting views.
By the way, how do I qualify to get the prize money of $200 from your company?

Of course, when were children when we see an elderly person we stand up, to allow this elderly person have the seat or place. No one insulted his or her elderly person. So obviously when those children are today parents which of course, born their children with this etiquette they learnt at school. But the recent insults you see every day is something which some half-baked journalist invented. Those uncivilized journalist perpetrate such nuisance on their media. Thus the people thought its a better way of demonstrating democracy. These journalists are very uncultured, half-baked and even most of them have never left the shores of Ghana, to differentiate what is good to publish and what is not good for publishing. They think freedom of speech is a licence to allow people to say anything on the radio. I hope the authorities would take the necessary measures to curb this inexperienced journalism.

Parenting is a technique but in Ghana parenting is authoritative and torture. Every parent have absolute control in the house, what to say, what to eat and how the family is treated.
Very vivid in my mind is when elders talk and a child sit in but have an opinion, he/she is brushed off. He/she has no mature brains to partake in the conversation. Hence ordered to leave adults to make sense in the event of an argument. The child is shun in the face and sometimes verbally abused. My question is, what if Jesus was raised up in Ghana, our leaders would not have listened to His words.
I have written this on Ghanaweb before, our parents are the cause of our short vocabularies in the world. According to world languages and experts, Ghanaians have the shortest Vocabularies in the world and the reason is simple. We re not expressive enough but rather insulters and this is due to our upbringing.
Do you remember times when you seek to unearth truth in some questions and approach your parents for answers and all you get is a direct knock on your forehead and verbal abuse, "akwadaa bonnie" get out of our sight. And the questions was, mom/dad, where do babies come from? lol.
How does such abuse affect our drive to succeed in this world and the answer is much more than thought. How!! Drive is a gift, an inborn to every child from the omnipotent. Once you land on this planet called earth, you want to seek your mission at that age and drive towards it. Your parents are the first point to help direct you and when you seek but your desire to research into anything at that tender age is killed, over and over again. You are forced to abandon whatever your purpose driven life.
The world all over will tell you, Ghanaians are most respective, kind, and hardworking, undeniable fact and I give credit to the same parents that killed my drive to succeed.
There are pluses and minuses to this but I strongly believe the minuses outweigh the plus and due attention must be considered.
Innovation and invention comes through queries and ask me how many Ghanaians in the world have come out with big projects. We prefer to work behind the scenes, because our upbringing at home did not gave us such exposure.
Classrooms and schools are also a place to engineer and help revive our drive but also "booboo". Canes and our helpful teachers add to more the killing of our drive to seek. When a teacher ask questions and you get it wrong, the cane miraculously knock the quest out of you and some how are dazed with unstoppable laughter from peers. Next time such questions come on board and you knew it, you kept your mouth shut from further embarrassment.
Our upbringing through parenting, peers, and schooling with all sorts of abuse are the root cause of our inability to express our selves but rather use insults.
I would however employ our up and coming parents to rather talk more to their kids by doing more of explanations than shutting them off.
Teachers are not suppose to use canes to teach but rather trained to use more words at schools to help students be courageous in their adventure but not scared, just because their peers will do the final damage control.
Though Ghanaians would prefer insults to fight, such cowardice has also brought us peace and our country stands to be one of the most peaceful on earth. Remember, there are pluses and minus to everything in life. What if Ghanaians had been trained to talk more rather than insult, maybe we would have been Rwanda or Alkaida!!!!

Unless we shed our ethnic pride and recognize that because of the influx of some of our Akan village relatives into the capital in overwhelming numbers, much is going to be destroyed. They did not come to the capital to learn the ways of the White man and Ga man, they did not come for greener pastures, they simply were escaping abject poverty and uncultured behaviors, what do you expect. I mean over 75% of the current residents or loiterers and squatters of Accra are illiterate (ie cannot read nor write English and worst of all Twi) they only know sinple words phrases for trading, much of the rest is all insults, because it is easy to spew, and also they are all uncivilized people. FACT!!!

The only solution would be to remove some of these elements forcefully, or by some strategic induction to return as productive citizens to their villages and enclaves.

For Ghana since 1970s, the way parents correct their wards for wrong doing is to resort to insults. A parent must insult their child for wrong doing before the correct them, likewise our teachers, they have to insult students by using words like 'you empty head', 'you idiot pay attention' etc . So all these people come out having experienced insults at childhood and see insults as nothing bad to avoid.

We also have pastors using insults to tarnish other religious bodies' images especially our fetish priests and so the children hear and say even a pastor/Imani is insulting muslims or Christians or gods,so why can I also use insults to put my message across.

And now the media have made it worse for any young one to desist from insults.

He treated people like dirt and the people were heard loud and clear baying for more blood and he was idolised for the way he mishandled the people. Rawlings rewarded those who supported him to insult and abused the people with juicy jobs. In recent years, Mills also rewarded his henchmen who insulted his political opponents best; the likes of Koku Anyidoho and Tony Aidoo and Allotey Jacobs readily come to mind. Recently, Kwakye Ofosu has landed a deputy ministerial post for lies and insults he heaped on his political opponents. So there you go! I wonder if the numerous religious organisations we have in Ghana preaches morality.Yes! not too long ago I was in the debating club and such things happened. Hmm, not surprised at all at the canker but I was really disappointed hearing some words people use particularly in the tertiary institutions. Well,this is getting out of hand and needs to be addressed.

Pray, this is an academic forum and we need to remove our political and ethnic blinkers, stretch our vision further, and realize that our nation is the only one we have.

In fact, whenever I want to recharge my academic batteries, I often engage fine minds on nigeriavillagesquare-a place similar to GHP . Those who know I am a Ghanaian often complain about the level of tolerance on this portal(GHP).

This is why I staunchly support Mr. Ayitey in his worthy cause. I rest my case!

How I wish we had tons of Mr.B.D.K Ayitey in the land and who are actively involved in public discourse in a bid to finding solutions to our economic and political problems.

I have always been dumbfounded as to why many people feel and think the best or only way to register one's protest against anything or somebody on any issue is to load one's tongue with venom! Mr. Ayitey has accurately identified the unfortunate trait of insults in our public discourse.

Could it be a display of part of our own way of doing things? You watch a panel on football game. Except they all belong to the same team, you're bound to witness screams of disagreement and outburst of frustration and anger as response to an opposing view from another panelist. Chances of witnessing this sort of bizarre spectacle on same sporting event elsewhere are nearly nil.

I think many fail to control their emotions which sadly get the better of them.

Just maybe, we all need to learn from the courtroom culture where two opposing lawyers would argue their cases strongly with the salient ingredient of decorum, without losing tempers. Lose your temper uncontrollably there and you're on the path of losing your case.

The stand taken by Mr. Ayitey is so good and healthy I cannot wait to see a change of heart by those of us not excluding our politicians and leaders who are guilty of this dehumanizing posturing. For instance, this forum freely offered by GhanaWeb has been a common turf trampled under silently. A change would put a smile on GhanaWeb which would certainly bring out some outstanding ideas from talented brains of the land to help build the country.

Are you expecting people to provide nice floral soft language that may be conducive to the environment and salubrious to the health of a huge and increasing number of incoherent educated idiots who love to speel frothy phrases that hold no substance and do not help to insulate the nations own inhabitants? Why is it that certain acts that are so simple and full of common sense to do good for the people, simply bypasses the focal point of politicians? If you cant see what all your financial ventures have attained, do you expect to see smiles all around? Surely a few insults are much better placed.

Can't win the heart of your opponent. I know not of a single positive it bears in our political discourse. And the absence of decency speaks no good of character building.

Your quote of Isaiah 57 has no bearing on the issue at stake at best we can't and dare not play the Almighty! The "I" in the 57th Chapter of Isaiah(NIV) represents the Almighty and we dare not assign the prerogative of same! It's Him speaking and only Him is entitled for His unsearchable reason and justice. Not us!

If you cherish the scriptures you would do well to clothe yourself with its character. Its true sometimes the actions, inaction and utterances of some of our leaders/politicians is provocative and naturally call for swift vituperation. And that's where most of us fall flat. Remember you cannot and do not build a nation on exchange of insults!

Is not therefore about providing soft and nice language. You can be stern without insult.

It is a fact that debate in schools do polish some people to become seasoned public speakers void of insults. However, a greater percentage of Ghanaians are groomed from their homes by thier own parents (especially mothers) with insults and this becomes a permanent language scar in their daily verbal communication. It is a fact that people who cannot articulate themselves well in discussions turn to imploy insults to silence or intimidate their opponents. They say charity begins at home and people who were raised in disciplined homes find it difficult to spew bad language because they don't have them and are not fluent in their vocabulary. e&oe.

We inherited this trait, which we duly passed it on to our American brothers and sisters, and now, we have "yo mama jokes" competitions on American TV where they give prizes to the best insults in the contest.

most Ghanaian resort to insult because they do not have solution to questions that are post to them by host of programmes.our educational systems are not strong as it was back in the days,i can tell you for a fact that about 90percent of form four leavers not to underrate them, are better than most of our university and polytechnic graduates of our time.i know you may ask why am saying this? because most of our Tertiary institutions in Ghana awards certificates instead of allowing students to study hard to ACQUIRE them.but what do we see today in our institutions,if a lady is ready to sleep with a lecturer her A is assured and if a guy is ready to pay money his is assured too.i suggest the government of Ghana derive a strategy to check lecturers and make sure they award certificates on merit.
