It must be noted that when the British visited northern Ghana dagombas were seen to be very, very, aggressive hence the British could not settle in dagbong but proceeded to the upper-north of Ghana. Because of the aggressive nature of dagombas many missionaries were unable to establish in dagbong. Have you paused to find out why many dagombas are not Christians? despite the current feud in dagbon, dagbong kingdom has been dominant and powerful. Lets not try to twist facts to suite mordern-day Ghana for whatever gains. Learn more on the emergence of the "wu ku apem, apem beba" or whatever. Also go and learn the history of the formation of Bantema in Kumasi.

It must be noted that when the Europeans visited northern Ghana, dagombas were already organised into kingdom and seen to be very, very, aggressive hence the Eropeans could not settle in dagbong but proceeded to the upper-north of Ghana, now Upper West and Upper East. Dagbong was seen by the Europeans to be one of the very few kingdoms in Africa. Because of the aggressive nature of dagombas many foreign missionaries were unable to establish or settle in dagbong. For helping the Gas, the Gas gave the Akyems the Notes to the Accra forts, which allowed them to be collecting the ground rent, until the Asantes seized those Notes from the Akyems in 1750.

Before the Akwamus attacked the Gas in 1677 due to the dispute arising from the circumcision of the Akwamu prince sent to the Ga Court, they were "vassals" (more like mercenaries and tax collectors) to the Gas, so couldn't have owned those Ga lands you mentioned in your other post.

Having said that, I'd like to tell Kwaku and all others who find these narratives offensive to hold their horses. It is said that those who forget their history are bound to repeat it, with all the tragic mistakes. History is a legitimate subject in our schools in Ghana too, you know? So, guys, soak in some history! History is everything we were in the past! What's wrong about knowing our past, the gory details and all???

The writer clearly said who he is: the son of the Denkyirahene, one of the states which suffered defeat in the hands of the emerging Asante state. Yet, he is narrating what is essential Asante history in relation to other polities within present Ghana and trying to do so objectively, limited by his knowledge on the subject. The latter offers the opportunity for those who know better to correct the erroneous claims in his narrative, which btw, were created by other sources he is privy to and held by many others too.

Besides, it offers those of us who have another take on our past to present that, as we believe understanding our past will shed a lot of light on our present situation, the ethnic imbroglio, prejudices, etc., that bedevil us. That's a project I have embarked upon for a while now, with what I describe as "didactic history", history narrated to teach and inculcate a moral lesson, just as I had done in my two series on the Tutsi/Hutu conflicts, The Chickens Coming Home to Roost. I shall post the sections on Ghana after Kufour has completed his narratives.

But just to shed light on something here. I can say with authority that it wasn't the Oyo Empire that defeated the Asantes at Atakpame, and that wasn't the only setback the Asantes suffered in crossing the Volta River: there were others. It was the Dahomeyan Kingdom, an Ewe kingdom, btw, supporting the Ewes of the area from Peki, Ho through Hohoe to Atakpame, referred to as Krepi which defeated the Asantes. It didn't stop the Asantes from returning though.

One has to know that the kingdom of Dahomey was founded by the Fons, Ewes who also left Notsie but decided to move back eastward to where they had come from and where there are still Ewe settlements, in order to reclaim what was theirs before the expanding Yorubas pushed Ewes and Ga-Adangmes from Nigeria. The Dahomeyans fought the Oyo cavalry to a standstill but since the Yorubas far exceeded in number, more still kept coming, leading to the epic battles b/n the two states fought, with Dahomey having to form and rely on women soldiers dressed like men which gave rise to the legend of the Amazons woven into the 1987 film "Cobra Verde" starring Klaus Kinski and Ghanaian actresses as the Amazons. The Yorubas tell of how their men decided to stay to fight to the end instead of continuing to run and meet the taunts of their women, when they discovered that they were fighting women! Dahomey found it wise to sue for peace, once the cat was out of the bag, in return to tributes to Oyo, and allowing Yoruba traders to operate freely in territories Dahomey held influence over. Of course, with the internal succession troubles in Oyo later and its disintegration, Dahomey renewed its attacks on the Oyo kingdom. Had the Fons not returned to fight the Yorubas and thus form a bulwark against the rapidly expanding Yorubas who were themselves under pressure from the Fulanis/Hausas/Nupes from northern Nigeria, the Oyo Empire would certainly had overrun present Benin and Togo up to the Volta. Or, all the Ewes, supported by the Ga-Adangmes, and the other minority groups the Ewes have joined in Togo and present Ghana, perhaps, would have stood their ground and won against them. I think this second scenario was more likely, considering what the Fons alone were able to do.

There are so many histories in Ghana but the most better history is that it were the AKWAPIMS who started CIVILIZATION in Ghana.

Other historians from other tribes can as well furnish us with their history as we all learn as a country.All surrounding Africa country learn Asante history as a subject because of the renowned power of the Asante people in the colonial days. The story about the Asante empire, which fought as far as present day Benin, Togo, Cote d'ivoire etc should rather be a source of pride for all Ghanaians afterall the Asantes today are still a force to reckon in terms of wealth creation and patriotic power.long live Asantehene, Long live Asantes

This is an Elementary history,I had this lesson when I was in form one back in the 1970's.

Queen Pokuaa, had wanted her brother Darko to inherit Osei Tutu but Opoku Ware did oppose that Darko was killed. Queen Pokuaa had to move her people to settle Ivory Coast; most of her people settled Wassa, Sahwi, Nzema all the way to where they are now at Ivory Coast

Akyem Abuakwa understood the strategic realities of the times and the geopolitical imperatives of that era fueled their war machine to fight the Ashantis 99 times. In one such encounter, the Tiger ate the porcupine alive in the PRA river. Please revisit your history properly and explain to us why New Juaben for example is Akyem Abuakwa land.

Good job he was challenged about the reliability of his accounts on the Kantamaso War and other wars but he could not correct the false history before he went to his maker. I think it is true that Naa Gariba was eventually captured in his quest to fight the Asantes. The writer did a very good job but he missed some of the facts. From what I know the two most powerful kingdoms( Asante and Mole-Dagbani) already established a treaty of friendship between them but when Naa Gariba violated the treaty by his decision to fight Asante, many of the chiefs of Dagbon warned him against it but he refused and took a small army to go and fight Asante. Many of the Dagomba chiefs disobeyed his call for war and withheld their armies from joining in the fight.

The Asantes countered by sending a very big force and most of them were killed by the forces of Naa Gariba. The Asantes again sent another large force and they also took heavy loses; but the Asantes vowed to keep sending more forces to fight until the forces of Naa Gariba were defeated. That vow marked the begining of the Asante slogan "Asante Kotoko, kum apem apem beba". As a sign of respect for the bravery and fighting spirit for the Dagombas, the Asantes also coined the accolade "Anwoa Kotoko". When Asantes and Dagombas who know their histories get together they salute each other by saying "Asante Kotoko, Anwoa Kotoko".

The Asante army with their numbers and superior weapons (the Asantes had rifles when the Dagombas used mostly spears, bows and arrows and muskets)finally defeated Naa Gariba and took him prisoner. He was however bailed out by his cousin Nasa-Lana Ziblim. Due to the defeat and the shame that Naa Gariba suffered he did not return to Dagbon. According to the history he took his own life rather than to go back home and live in shame.

The Asantes and Dagombas reaffirmed their treaty of friendship and the Dagombas agreed to pay 500 slaves annually to Asante as reparations for the losses that the war with Naa Gariba caused the Asantes. The bond between Asantes and Dagombas grew stronger when the Asantes transfered gun technology to Dagombas and also sent "military advisers" to train the Dagombas in gun manufacture. Upto today there are many Dagombas who trace their family roots to Asante due to the inter-marriage between the "military advisers" who came from Asante and Dagombas. Today in almost every town or village of Dagbon you will find the decendants of the Asante military advisers who are mainly regarded as the warriors or the King's military guard. They are known among the Dagombas as Dagbon-Kanbonsi.

What was amazing about this defeat was that the Asante defeat was engneered by the "Ahosi", the elite female soldiers [a collection of Yaa Asantewas, you like) of the Dahomey Empire. This defeat left an indelible wound on the the psyche of the Asante and explains how they relate to Ewes in Ghana today. Before the British defeated the Asante in 1874, the Ewe already defeated them more than 100 years earlier. Remeber to elaboarte on the implications of the Asante defeat at Atakpame in your next rendition of Asante history.
