I wish to comment on the proverb. The proverb is "nea otwa sa no nnim se n'akyi akyea'. It means he who is weeding or creating a pathway though the bushes does not know his back is crooked. It has nothing to do with dance. The word is "sa" not
"asa". Thanks

Alberta is right on point. It has nothing to do with demarcation. It is about creating a path through the bush. Our forefathers only had simple tools and whoever has ever held on to a machete would know it feels when you're told to slash the weeds. You only get to see what you've done and how it looks like behind you after you're almost done. You think you're weeding straight until well......

Youngman, don't be allow yourself to be intimidated by the attacking notes; keep up the good work. It's ufortunate that northerners themselves are engaged in acts that will retard the progress of an institutions with great potentials. The president some few months ago announced the establisment of a university in the Eastern region. It seems clear now that every region should have a university. The government should not maintain a multiple compus as it is now, thereby creating a core-periphery form of admistration which has always prevailed in the north. There are three campuses; they should be given autonomous administration; there is too much ineptitude inthe present system in Tamale to be able to run a multisited campuse especially given the tribal undertones that are beginning to emerge in the administration. It is also important that any Ghanaian , not a northerner be given the chance to run the university; there is too much at stake in bridging the gap between the north and the rest of the country for this institution to be toyed with. A university that does not have offices for its lecturers to meet with students or to ensure that lecturers can be monitored is not worth it name; The administration needs to ensure that there is monitoring of its staff. You have talked about corruption and tribalism but the quality of teaching in the some of the campuses needs serious examination, too.

Reading through this article one gets the impression that UDS is a University of the North, by the north and for the North. It's weird! Or is it by default that the leadership of the University is primarily made of Northerners since, as I imagine, many Southern intellectuals possibly still see the North as some Siberia they could do without. Whatever the case, the allegations raised demand national, not Northern, investigations.

A VC must be someone who has a superb profle and charisma. Someone of international status to lead the young university. If we allow tribalism and napotism to divide us, we will fall. I had the same feeling long time ago that, you need to know somebody in UDS before you can get a job there. This is very sad.

I enjoyed reading your articles. But one can easily argue that you saw nothing wrong with the university when its management was dominated by people of a particular ethnic group. Though, the University is cited in the North, it is not for northerners, just as one cannot say that UCC is for Fantes or Legon for Gas.
You should advocate that all regions should have autonomous universities and not campuses (in the case of UDS).

"There is an Akan adage that says, “Nea otwa asa nnim se nakyi akyia”. To wit, he who dances so beautifully does not know that his/her back is crooked".
Joe, your interpretation of the Akan adage is wrong.

As a development activitist myself, I have trying to convince my son that UDS is the best university to attend if he is successful at the WASSCE 2013. I find the programmes at Wa Campus to be much more relevant to our social and economic development than the course combinations on offer at Legon and KNUST. But it just struck me that almost 100% of the faculty are from the Northern or at least have Northern names. in my naivity I felt guilty that Southern scholars and students as usual were under-rating this University and was spurred on to get my son to do something different. After reading about nepotism amongst the various ethnic groups I now shudder at the thought. Please don't let your bias kill this rare genm of a Univeristy

The writer implies:
"There is an Akan adage that says, “Nea otwa asa nnim se nakyi akyia”. To wit, he who dances so beautifully does not know that his/her back is crooked."
Actually, the adage has nothing to do with dancing.
Rather it correctly says: "Nea oretwa esa (sa) no, onim se n'akyiri akyea"
Esa or sa is the Akan word for boundary or ehyi?. Thus, when one is lining up or drawing up(demarcating)a boundary, one cannot know necessarily whether the line is drawn correctly or not.
To wit, it is those who are witnesses who must draw his attention to the fact that the boundary or ehyi? is crooked (akyea).
Some may even interpret 'esa' or 'sa' in the context of the proverb as meaning ?kwan or a narrow foot path!
But I think esa appropriately means a line or boundary. Sukkuu nkwadaa no ato esa tenten meaning; the school children have formed a long line!!
This proverb teaches us and advises (especially those in leadership or command positions) that one person alone cannot necessarily be a judge and jury. We must listen to the views of others. It is synonymous with Etikro nko agyina (tuo)!!!
(I am Kofi Ellison and I approve this message! multilingual and linguist!!)
