Killing of “spirit children” abolished in Upper East Region

The practice of killing children believed to possess spirits, has now been formerly abolished in seven communities of the Upper East region.

The chiefs, opinion leaders and people of the seven communities which are in the Kasena-Nankana East and West districts, have publicly announced the end of the spirit child phenomenon.

Myjoyonline.com published a report on April 1, 2011, on the chilling practice of cultural murder; the killing of babies who are born with deformities, or whose birth coincide with a tragic incident in the family, such as the loss of a parent.

In that report titled "SHOCKING!… Ritual baby killing
in Northern Ghana", Joy News Seth Kwame Boateng visited the “Sirigu” orphanage to uncover the chilling practice of cultural murder; the killing of babies who are deformed at birth.

The Seven communities, known to be practicing the killing of alleged spirit children, held a grand durbar on Saturday, to announce an end to the age old barbaric practice.

The declaration followed 12 years of intensive education against the practice, by Afrikids Ghana, a Child Rights Non-governmental Organisation.

Meanwhile, the 30 elders (concoction men), who brew poisonous liquid from local roots and herbs and force-feeds the alleged spirit children until they die, have been presented with four goats, a bicycle each, food items and have been registered under the National Health Insurance.

They are now to be called “Life Promoters” and have been tasked to promote the life of hitherto spirit children.

As part of the package, the former concoction men will be taken on a trip to schools in the communities to interact with pupils on specific issues affecting them.

I think the point the witness was making is that the thieves rather than the watchman would be charged with theft. The thieves cannot raise the defence that they succeeded in stealing because the watchman failed to catch them.

I do acknowledge your "observation" but do think your analysis could have been academic by conceptualising Bawumia’s thought to benefit your readers and publics. As it stands, you sound too polarised.

You quoted Bawumia as saying “you will not hire a watchman and allow him to go blameless if he sleeps under the watch and allow a thief to slip into your house”.

Simply put, watchmen/women are supposed to be observant and if possible ward off intruders. Having been a security man (watchman) in the past, I find your thinking interesting; in practice a watchman can be overtaken by many events and to a large extent beyond the watchman’s capability. For instance a watchman can be sedated, overpowered or even shot. Being a watchman does not mean you should put yourself in harms way; you need to use your brains in order to be safe. A watchman may choose times to go on patrol, maintain static positions or adopt the use of sound to alert intruders of their presence etc.

Your analysis suggests that it is only when a watchman/woman sleeps that thieves break in, NO WAY. Thieves can break in even if the watchman is on sentry guard. Note that ‘good’ and ‘determined’ [be they tilapia] thieves have become sophisticated in their act. If all the watchman has is a truncheon and thieves attack you with something that looks like a weapon, it is silly to fight back. In the best of my training, security (watchmen/women) are not required to fight intruders or put themselves in harms way. They are not trained policemen or women and not armed. Even if armed they are accountable for the use of their weapon.

Whilst the watchman/woman may be part of an enquiry when there is a break in, it makes sense to take the necessary steps to retrieve your property if the thief is known.

Secondly, it is the duty of the Principal to ensure that the watchman is properly equipped and that the necessary environment is present to make the security of his/her premises safe. The watchman/woman is there to reinforce the security of the premises. He or she is not there to engineer security. What this means to us as observers in the ongoing SC case is that the polling agents are not engineers of security at the polling stations. The EC is mandated to ensure that the process they are statutorily mandated to oversee is full proof, anti-theft and trustworthy. It is for that reason why they sought to introduce biometric equipment accompanied by RULES of the game. It therefore makes sense to go after the “thief” [if known] to reclaim what is rightly yours.
