  In Ghana today we don't seem to know the differences between education and training, academician or scholar and practitioner,etc. This is the cause of the problem confronting our educational system. In the US for instance a degree in Chemistry, for instance,from a college is not the same as a degree from a college and so any employer knows the difference between the two. The reason is that if you want to be a scholar you go to school or university whiles workers go to colleges. The same thing applies in the UK where those who want to be practitioners opt for the professional courses like the ACCA, CIMA, Royal Society of Engineers, etc. Unfortunately for us in Ghana we have jammed everything together to confuse the populace. I tell you 99% of all programmes offered at the tertiary level in Ghana are academic programmes and one should not expect to secure automatic employment unless the individual goes through mentoring and work experiences. this explains why people complete universities and cannot create jobs for themselves or even write books. What people go to universities to read is other people's general philosophy about a subject area and this is not enough to create jobs. Another problem with our educational system is that we have a lot of professional graduate teachers in the classrooms who cannot even teach their subject areas yet the GES is protecting them. This is how far our useless university education has brought us.
