Nice piece with nice entreaties,Ghanaian warts and all. However, i beg to differ as our most dire need is not able leadership but rather a paradigm shift in our collective mentality. How can we get able leadership if the pool from which we get leaders is highly contaminated? The leaders you get are always a reflection of their society. The Ghanaians who tribalize everything, those who bribe, those who've made Ashiaman and Old Fadama an eyesore and those Ghanaians who expect govt to put food on their table are all reflected in our shameful leadership.

I can tell you live in N. America, and have grand ideas about changes you would like to see based on what you've seen in America. Really, can you pull this off?
If so show us. Lead the way by actions, not just empty battle cries.

Society is not perfect anywhere. That is why we government - to control our individual whims and caprices, lest we do what satisfies our egos only to the detriment of others. That is why leaders are given all the tools and powers to act on our behalf. A good leader can fight corruption, tribalism and indeed, most of the ills of society.

the fantis did not vote for ndc rather they put their faith in atta mills who was undermined and later brutally murdered by the ewes. he hoped that the unity of the nation would be the basic platform to ensure a better standard and he also tried do something better. if there was an election today ndc would not even get 5% since no one can fool the sophisticated voters of the fanti speaking peoples of the western and central regions. the ndc used one of the oldest tricks and lies of politics by proclaiming an ideological platform which enables any idiot to participate and talk without really understanding what it takes to be competent enough to serve the interests and welfare of the people. so we are now saddled with a hegemonic ayigbe mafia , corrupt , selfish , greedy , sodomizing thieving govt so determined in the rape and looting of the national coffers that i fear only a civil war will remove them from there.

Really? Do you think a no nonsense MP or govt administrator who strictly enforces a thorough clean up, stringent trash disposal, building maintenance and not taking a dump anywhere as is the case now would be welcome or even voted for?Ghanaians don't like painful remedies and our leaders know they can't do a very good and strict job otherwise they'll risk being voted out. What satisfies our caprices is very anti good/smart leadership as the leaders fear loss of support from the capricious/contaminated voters too.

I enjoyed Okunka's piece but as I was reading I was wondering if he the promoter, has been able to organize anybody at all towards this cause to cre4ate a new leadership. Much as I dont really oppose his article in general, I thought this one was quite idealistic and romantic. This is against the grain of some of his articles that I have read.
What we need in this country at this particular point in time is a radical overhaul of the entire system - not only the leadership. We need this to be able to reorganize and reschedule our aspirations for the future. If we fail to do this we shall continue to suffer and remain terminally under-developed from the overwhelming shortcomings of what we are currently enduring.

Let's find ways to work together even if the battle cry comes from a kid.
Ego trip and too much of education that is not even helping us practically is one of the problems.

Nii, thanks for the shearing. i live in Japan, have been here for the past 8years. i see these japs to very hard working, patriotic and very honest people. i know in every society there are good and bad nuts, but in the case of Japan the good nuts are like just 0.5% of the population as compared to our Ghana where the bad nuts are 99.5%. you see the difference. Japan is a country where no one envys the life of another cus the are trained to be content with what they have, love the nation , pay taxes and be very straight forward in their day to day activities.
I always feel like all of our leaders dont even deserve to lead us becuse they are shaddy and rather want the followers to be clean. leadership by example.
GOD BLESS GHANA

You've put up a nice piece. Come up with the write-up of nobody paying bribes as a starting point and citizens arrest of the thieves and prosecuting them.
Elucidating on the tribalism was very excellent. You can't believe it when people keep on supporting somebody simply because that fellow is his tribesman/woman.
How can a whole President award contracts to his children to supply electricity meters without any bidding and nobody raised a finger because his tribe will shout you down.Yet the ignorant tribal supporting this nepotism of this myopic President is a pauper and hardly get his/her three square meals everyday.
The nonsense of tribalism goes on and on.

Even without a question mark at the end of your heading, it is still a thougtful question. Equally, you provide some meaningful answers as the factors that retard our progress.
According to you, these factors include corruption, incompetence, tribalism, nepotism, etc.
However, those factors only provide "proximate" answers or reasons, but not tools to solve the familiar problem of developmental stagnation.
I wish you had gone into some analysis of how to alleviate the corruption, incompetence, tribalism and nepotism. That, I think, would have been the informative and the desirable part that would give us some "ultimate" answers or problem-solving tools.
