We must seriously defend our elders and leaders of state because of the ewe-anlo attitude; we would need to now find out more about these people from Volta Region, who joined the country only in 19th century: Before then, the major tribal groupings were at peace with themselves, each with their own polities and chieftaincies and struggling over land and resources before the Portuguese, and later other Europeans arrived in the Gold Coast in the late 15th century. The devastation, destruction, exploitation, slavery, battles upon battles between tribal nations and collectively against the Europeans from the early 16th to 19th century was shocking in present day Ghana. The people became exhausted over all these things and gradually built bridges across the tribal nations, especially after the defeat of the Asantes in 1874 by the British in the Sagrenti war. The people of Ghana reconciled and resolved to accommodate each other as we all aspire to be one. It was this ideation that formed the basis for agitation for independence right from the period of the Aborigines Rights Protection Society. All these events occurred before Ewes came from Nigerian Ketu to Benin’s Notsie, before Agorkoli’s tyranny drove them to flee to present day Volta Region in 1878…late 19th century. At this time so much water had passed under the bridge. For example, Kwamena Asameni had seized the Osu castle; the Dutch had had their fill in the exploitation of gold in Ghana and left to discover South Africa in 1652…I am writing this as a true historian, who has studied Ghana, lectured by a proper Anlo man. I reiterate herein that the evil combination of slave trade, imperialism and colonialism engendered strife and restlessness in Gold Coast, which affected us grievously and exhausted us immeasurably and so we became tolerant of each other, including the new groupings as Ewes and Anlos, as well as the Mossi, Mole Dagbani and Dagarba peoples of Northern Ghana. Every leader of state considered everyone as Ghanaian. The UGCC was made up of leaders from all Tribal-Nation states, and we have since done very well as a Unitary State under Kwame Nkrumah up to Dr Hilla Limann. In our school time in the 1970s, when there was no politics due to military rule, we all lived together as one people. We never discriminated though we knew the ewes and anlos were tribalistic purely out of their low level of enlightenment, poor historic traditions and the formation of NAL by Gbedemah, Okudzeto, Agama and Obed Asamoah, which created for the first time Tribal Separation in National Politics…Then Rawlings came and introduced this on-going ewe-anlo hate-filled tribalism that led to persecution of non-ewe-anlo peoples of Ghana. We all have scars to prove the ewe victimization but have kept it to ourselves as our ancestors instilled in us the essence of forgiveness. BUT EWEDOM seeks to tear us forever apart and we cannot allow it, and yet they do not listen! We must study ewes and anlos and find out why they behave so poorly; why they all vote the same way; why they are never happy with everything they have got from Ghana…Ewes came to meet the Volta lake in Ghana in the 19th century but claim they own it…they have to be made to scale down their hatred and animosity that keep wearing our patience down otherwise, one day there will be so much trouble for them! As a historian, I have read about bitter inter-tribal wars in Ghana. Some were very bloody and thousands die. Some of the old petty differences exist; many other Ghanaians harbor Rawlings ewe-dominated evil and treachery they suffered and had not forgotten it. I have never once forgotten what tribalistic Rawlings administration destroyed my family’s peace and will not allow it again. I will go down with anyone who threatens my family again, and is not alone. We must rein in or clamp down on the ewe-anlo nonsense and save our peace, Ghanaians. It’s not Nana Akuffo Addo they are after but everyone not in their tribe or favour and yet these people have leaders and chiefs, who should know better…A word to a wise is enough, Anlos! Beware of the bitter recriminations, revenge and reprisals stored for you, if you dare! Stop your tribalism and treachery and save Ghana the peace we all need…otherwise, hassacas!!!

Nana may have nothing to offer them, as you suggest, but action of these traders also shows that there are a lot of people out there who are looking for a real leader. The traders' action also exposes the incompetence and insensitivity of the Mahama administration. Look, I'd support a government policy to rebuild the markets. But the government is going about it the wrong way. If the traders truly have a long-term lease with the Ghana Railway Authority, then the government should sit down the leaders of the traders to reason with them. That said, there is no justification for the traders to be attacking security forces trying to maintain law and order. That we should all condemn.

I can assure Kpakpo Allotey that the traders are doing the right thing. Nana Akuffo Addo is a Ghanaian citizen and he may choose to meet whoever he chooses.
Also, bear in mind that the traders are the leaseholders of the land on which they traded hitherto the fire. The traders can come to together - form a Cooperative and approach the bank for a loan to re-build the market the way they want it. It is not the job of the state to build premises for private businesses.
The reason for the meddling of AMA is because they have motives that are other than helping the traders. Vanderpuye! Don't you have enough problems to deal with? The capital is overrun with filth. People are building illegally on government land without impunity.
Dr Vanderpuye concentrate on working with the powers that be to strengthen the legal framework for Building and Safety regulations rather than trying determine what private businesses do with their leaseholds.
Your job would be to ensure that in their re-construction of the market they compile with all the building legislation concerned. That's where your authority begins and ends.

While the Author of the Article raised some questions worth discussing, his personal insults on both Akufo-Addo and the aggrieved traders would dilute the interests of many well-meaning folks to help resolve the issue.

Folks, we need to calm down and use level-headedness to sort through the chaos for a better country. We cannot move ahead with this kind of growing animosity and worsening disrespect for one another. The persistent mutual ethnic disparaging only deepens the rift between us and entraps us in perpetual vicious circle of primitivity. While we keep fighting each other our Gold and Oil and other Resources are being whisked outside to bolster the Economies of recipient countries with hardly any significant returns to us.

Manama or Akufo-Addo can do only little for the country under this atmosphere. Let us prove to the World that we can build our country ourselves with dignity and mutual respect.

The insults are a breach of our own human rights and a sign of our lack of self-worth. That only gives the outsiders plenty of incentive to exploit us further. They see it all as a structural weakness in our system to take advantage of.

And to those hoping that exacerbating the Tribal Tensions would hasten their quest for permanently shutting off one group or the other, I bet my bottom Cedi that can never happen. So, we all better learn fast to sensibly accommodate and work equitably with one another. Or, we would only be protracting the suffering of the ordinary folks and our posterity.

Let our humanity mean more than just we are sharing now!!

This sounds like they have been tasked by somebody to oppose the Minister and after doing so they went to give that person a report and get additional directives.

Yes kpakpo no matter what one can think about his article is quite right, Nana Akufo ca't do anything to help these traders. They better support the government to help them than to rely on a fictitious President to help. he does not have any capacity to help.

If they continue that way their area could be left without any investment until Nana Akufo-Addo seize power which is not for tomorrow.

Believe me my friends, I am not NDC militant I am just an observer of the political life of Ghana.

Nana was in charge of the ministry of foreign affairs when it got burned down. He was also a part of the then defeated government that managed to leave fires in their wake, especially in offices where corruption was alleged to have been the order of the day whilst they were in power.

So of course. A prominent market will burn anytime the news cycle begins revving into discussing Nana's supreme court case, especially when his previous outing was a disaster for the petitioners. That way his troubles are publicised well enough to sink into the public consciousness before the next sitting which will wipe away memories of a prior bad performance in the dock.

Anyone who is surprised, that the Kantamanto traders went to see Nana must have their heads examined. How else will they be able to keep the 'fire' issue burning in the media when the government. They simply lack ideas to divert attention from their poor showing in the 24hr news cycle.
