This is the result of weak leadership and lack of foresight, irrespective of party. Ghana currently needs a nationalistic and autocratic leader who will stand firm in face of difficulties or pressure from any group of persons even if they come from his/her own party. The government should seriously review the relevancy of some of these lecturers (or instructors). There are far too many of them teaching some useless courses in the universities. They recycle old notes and sell them to students. Most of these students don’t have any marketable skills when they graduate – they cannot communicate properly (orally or in writing); they lack analytical and problem solving skills; some even don’t know the subject matter of their studies. The government universities should concentrate on programs that are relevant to the economy. There is too much duplication of useless programs across the universities Seriously speaking the Government/Country CAN AFFORD to close down the universities for about two (2) years without any serious repercussions. We will then save substantial amount of money, curtail the production of hundreds or thousands of half-baked illiterate graduates; weed out bogus lecturers and eliminate programs and courses irrelevant to the economy and future development of the country.

This is a very good article and I hope many Ghanaians will read and learn. Bill Gates is one of the greatest adventures even though he is a college drop out. There are some with two year diploma receiving more than some who have doctorate degree. It is the contribution one makes with his wisdom and whatever knowledge he has not the certificate.

This is the truth! There are many examples out there and what we need to understand is that without a desire to acquire new knowledge and apply that knowledge to solve some of the many problems we face, you can drag people through schools, colleges, universities... you name it... but they will accomplish so little. Money and influence are positive factors but we need to help our children, brothers, sisters, friends, etc., place their interests in continuous self improvement through reading and discovery. There were/ are many examples in your own class, just take a minute and reflect and you will quickly identify those who have achieved or are achieving so much with little, and vice versa. The difference is self motivation, a quest for self improvement and perseverance. Let's encourage one another so the other person can see their God-given potential to greatness, invest in themselves... not burying their talents! God bless us all.

Yes, this is very true. I did a lot of oil and gas courses in the gulf. When i returned to Ghana to look for a job as a training officer, They were asking me if i had a masters degree. So i asked the secretary whether he has heard about Qatar Gas and Qatar petroleum and he replied yes. I asked him what prevents me from working in Ghana with my certs if i have worked in these companies. Today, i am back here and making my money since they recognize my competence with my certs and not masters.
So my brothers, Ghana still has a long way to go. High qualifications but can not produce results. I just believe that our learned people are being selfish. Just imagine the teacher in active service who has to pursue this raw diploma for three years when this same course can be done in six months. Just frustrating these poor teachers. We need to wake up as a nation.

You mention Bill Gates and M. Zukerberg among others but, what you do not know is that these people employ the best talents/professionals across America and aroud the globe - from Harvard, Yale, MIT, etc., with masters and Ph.D certificates to grow their businesses. Apply for a job at a fortune 500 company as a high school or college dropout and see where that will get you. The fact is that the cerificate documents that you have completed a course of study. That gets you to the door but then you have to prove your worth or you are out the door. Certificates are very important everywhere! A means to an end but not an end in itself! There is nothing wrong with acquring certs.

Great piece, am currently fixing together a book in which i have spelled out some of these concerns, it is only in Ghana that a degree is getting out of usefulness but we have nothing to show for it, for instance in all our educational institutions of higher learning you will realize at the end of the day there's no difference between first class student and a pass student because they both can't achieve anything great, even institutional names is a great concern for most Ghanaians instead of the reputation of these institutions, great institutions are build on reputation not name branding, "Polytechnics to be change to technical universities" no difference, in fact, institutions are build on the substance that make up that institution not names, classical example is Massachusetts institute of technology is without the NAME tag university. Education is only a potential power. I can't write all here you got to grab a copy of my yet to be book "think and win more than you can really think"
