  It might interest you to know that the average South African's definition of "an African" is very different from the one portrayed by Mbeki.
  
  There is also a palpable ignorance of the rest of Africa, a distinct lack of interest and a sense of pomposity and in some cases a superiority complex among certain sections of that country - a country that so many millions of Africa for many years cried for, prayed for and fought for!

  First, the Apartheid era regimes negative propaganda must be blamed for nurturing that negative perception and attitude towards other Africans. The focus was totally on the negatives in order to show to the Blacks that they were better off under the Apartheid system.
  
  Secondly, Mandela and the ANC must also be blamed for taking an aloof stand from the rest of Africa upon coming to power. I can tell you for sure that I read the report while in preparation, written by a Norwegian, which advised that policy. I was dismayed reading that. The consultancy assignment was to advise whether to join the African Devt Bank, for instance, and pursue their interests from a united Africa perspective or from a regional (SADCC) perspective. The bad advice was to focus on a SADCC regional direction, with a revival of Cecil Rhodes Cape to Cairo agenda being central, with S. Africans playing the active roles as pioneers fanning upwards to conquer economically the rest from the Cape to Cairo! S. Africans were thus not prepared and re-programmed or re-educated to know and accept that S. Africa was now opened to the rest of Africa too, and Africans would also like to go to S. Africa to take advantage of opportunities there. New films about the rest of Africa should have been shown to them, showing the positive sides too. Mandela managed to stop the ensuing initial xenophobic attacks on migrants but not much else.
  
  Thabo Mbeki tried to fill that gap, without any serious internal programme in place to support him. His quoted speeches were in fact meant for external consumption, in order to placate the reaction from the rest of Africa, rather than wean his fellow S. Africans from their xenophobia.
  
  Interesting to note that one of the desires expressed by some S. Africans when Mandela was recently hospitalised was that his death would finally give them the go ahead to clear out African migrants in their country! They never see the 100s of 1000s of Eastern European migrants as objects to harass and chase out too though. Let them start and we shall see!
  
  A word on cousin and fellow Nkrumaist journey man Kojo T's moans about our elite.
  
  Perhaps, it is necessary to trace their origins in order to appreciate their rapacious capacity for primitive accumulation (corruption) and why they lack empathy for the poor and less privileged, as revealed by the Wikileaks reports.

  The elite should be doing more to BUILD instead of continuing to be parasites. I think the writer empathises with the semi literate followers but the elite should understand the dire economic consequences of their actions
