I hope many of them read this piece and make a change in their hearts and minds for the better of their patients. Honesty, Humility, Respect and Patience with Patients are what every worker in the Healthcare system needs.

I hope many of them read this piece and make a change in their hearts and minds for the better of their patients. Honesty, Humility, Respect and Patience with Patients are what every worker in the Healthcare system needs.

Being Honest to them and telling them their problems and your plans for their problems or any alternatives for them. Also letting them know the risks involve in your plans or treatment/medications.

Humbling yourself in front of your patience actually allows the patience to have confidence in you to tell you more about their problems so that you will treat them effectively.

Sick people or patients need to be respected at all cost. Remembering that anyone who is sick is "poor." He could be rich like Bill Gates, but poor physically, psychologically and may be spiritually. That is the reason why they came to the hospital or Clinic for help. Nurses could respect the sick by talking to them nicely and comforting them and more importantly, respecting their autonomy and confidentiality. In other words, stop shouting their names, diagnosis, prognosis, medications, etc.. in front of other patients.

How do you deal with someone with S.O.B (not son of bitch) but Shortness of Breath or Asthmatic patient who is short tempered and can't talk ? Clearly, you need to have patience with such patient, else you will actually exacerbate his illness. Taking your time to explain something or directives on the med container to your patient will not kill you. I have found out that this is one area most Ghana or Africa trained professionals lack... we learn those things from our parents because we are not allowed to ask question and so we bring that to our profession. It needs to be stopped.

How I wish they see their calling as a vocation to serve. But alas! those minority who excel in this area are overwhelingly dwarfed by the majority who see their calling as a privilege to assume a position of givers of life and death.
Come to Europe and witness to yourself the selflessness and dedication of your counterparts.How their unwelcoming attitudes are left at home and transformed into a cohort of angels discharging their care for patients, regardless of age, culture,race etc, with celestial devotion. I recall a scenario in St Thomas' Hospital, London,(UK)where a Ghanaian patient had a go at a devoted nurse for having moved his wallet from where he had put it while making his bed.I was more than disgusted. Meanwhile, he was eating a breakfast with youghourt on his tray.
I said to myself, how ungrateful he was and how lucky he had been to be in Europe? He would probbably have had no breakfast or if at all only "Kooko" with nothing.
To wind up, I would plead with the majority of nurses in Ghana who have assumed the power of life and death givers to shed that attitude and go back to their calling and their reward will BE GREAT IN HEAVEN.

Hello, the last I was in a Ghanaian hospital was 2003. I have just read that "urses in Ghana love their profession no matter the odds, they make effort to put aside the frustrations they encounter as nurses and perform perfectly for the sake of mankind." ARE YOU SAYING GHANAIANS NURSES HAVE CHANGED OR ARE CHANGING - HURRAY!!!! Then I read further that "On the other side of the coin, are the few bad ones. Those who are constantly dragging the image of the profession into the mud, ... they are those who fell into the profession by accident and hey roar at the sick at the least provocation as if they have land dispute problems with them" = THIS IS WHAT I KNEW ALL NURSES IN GHANA TO BE SINCE I WAS BORN.

If a nurse in the UK, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, USA, and anywhere else in the civilized world behaves like they used to do in Ghana, that day would be his/her last day as a Nurse ever. He/she will be fired first of all, de-certified, and perhaps would have to go into a different profession all together - like the cashier in a small store gas station in Ghana who behaves as if coming into their shop makes her a queen: she doesn't know that "HE PPER IS THE KING or QUEEN". I think they should all be sent out to a westernized country just for a day so they can see "HAT A NURSE IS REALLY LIKE and WHAT A STORE CASHIER IS REALLY LIKE". Fools!! Now that Ghana is changing, they better change and change quickly or people like me will return as Managers and they will see themselves fired so fast just like you throw away an overchewed gum.

This is not true at all. I wish this is a true reflection of nursing in Ghana but sadly, its not. Nurses in Ghana need a change in attitude and mind as patients are slowly getting to know their right and the fact that they deserve better care. A big disgrace to nurses who have entered the profession by mistake and do not know the meaning of COMPASSION.
