If you want to identify athletes, you can still recognize them from Junior/Senior High school, give them scholarship to the colleges, or whatever system you have. Also, where are they going to compete? Somebody needs to sit up and replan the sports ministry/system. If there's no competitive sports to reward and promote them in Ghana, it wont matter how many years they spend in school.

Kwame, Well said! You do have very good points in the development of sports during the era of the Sixth Form system. However, I still think the changes in the educational system means the government should re-invent itself to meet the changes as is today. The United States had an educational system very similar to what we have today but they still produce very good athletes. I guess they have a system that encouraged people to pursue their goals and enhance their talents all the way through. So yes to Nana, the goverment ought to come out with a new system to accommodate the educational change and effect, enable the country re-invent itself, recoggnize the sport, and enhance its value to make people yearn to pursue it.

A nation that wants to go further has to reinvent and energize itself. There is nothing wrong wit the current educational changes. The schools need to put more emphasis on sports activities. If possible create a scheme that also reward athletes just like in the olden days and the opening of more sports complex where people can learn various sports.this will also help reduce obesity and other illness that is now eating our youths despite their young age.

I suspect school authorities had relegated sports to the background.Age is not the problem.

Many thanks for the piece, Sir! But its sad to say that its not only our athletes roaming and selling dog-chains on our streets. There are many other talents including musicians, mathematicians, academicians, actors, farmers, among others, forgotten and ignored in the country.Until the question of leadership of the country is properly addressed, I think many, many talents may go untapped until thy kingdom comes.

Yes but when you let people like Francis Dodoo who left the shores of ghana, who was spoon fed and never been broke in his life because he's from a well to do family and does not understand that sports in general is not for rich kids who struggle, hustle to make the sport be it track, soccer, hockey etc their get away, their pride , passion and you have someone who has never gone without food to run the program like they do in the US it won't work. We also don't regard or train our coaches for the various individual skills needed. There's PE teachers being used as track and field coaches. Most PE teachers coming out of Winneba Sports College or other places opt to go into soccer coaching 'cos that's whether they can readily. be employed. My point is that we elect the wrong people into offices/places they don't qualify to be. Francis was a good athlete but not a sports administrator. That's why he had his too known buddy Andrew Owusu tell him what to do. He solely rely on this guy to ruin Ghana sports. They tried to put a program to a high level when they don't even know how to groom young athletes. They go for ready made athletes who are on their way out-in other words "dead horses" when a young up and coming athletes sit and rotten for old horses to be utilized. They have wasted the countries resources and hard earned foreign currencies. Francis and cohorts do not understand what goes on in Ghana sports. It starts from the ground and works it way up and that's call grooming up and coming future athletes-not old horses who can only run heats and not finals. They have no agenda or any preparation plans for track and field. They do lip service to the media and the media also being so stupid doesn't do their home work or ask the right questions but print whatever is said to them with any questioning. Yes the destroying of the school systems was also a big factor in this and if we want good future student athletes we need to go back to the old system and bring the tartan track to Accra Sports Stadium since it's in a unique location for all athletes and other sports disciplines

MY QUESTION IS: "WHO DESTROYED THE SCHOOL SYSTEM? WHO? THAT PERSON MUST EITHER ASSIST TO RESTORE IT, OR MUST BE MADE ACCOUNTABLE. This is a mess, to say the least. It is wrong for me visit the country from time to time and then look after my family alone, return and think I have achieved something. Our leaders must WAKE UP,TAKE OWNERSHIP AND ACT AS TRUE LEADERS, for this is RIDICULOUS!
