He may be armed, but I am grateful he did not cloth himself in political suit with tie, a ball pen in hand, the demeanour of a lamb instead of a wolf exhibited by other, at least he used his cash donations from international awards for worthy cause instead living big on them. He did not try to extol his name in his lifetime ..... but for future generations to put his name at its proper place. Though the longest served president but non of his children became rich overnight to easily buy luxurious hotel, more could be said but this debate would never be exhausted.

Rawlings had the best opportunity to change the nation's history and its development but he blew it. At the time he came to power the economy was bleeding, and generally, the nation was obviously heading in the wrong direction. Everybody knew it. JJ knew it too so he told ghanaians what we wanted to hear. That was the beginning and end of the so-called revolution. The "promised messiah" diagnosed correctly what the nation's ailment was but he had no clue what the remedy was.Ghanaians support for his tough buga buga measures could be likened to a patient visiting the doctor's office to seek remedy for a malignant illness.After some tests the doctor asks the patient questions which only require yes and no answers . Ghana,the patient, answers in the affirmative to all the questions and becomes convinced the doctor is a phenomenom .He has absolute faith in the doctor's competence and his hope of making a full recovery soars to giddying heights. The doctors's prescription is followed religiously but 34 years after the visit to the doctor's office the patient is fading fast and is expected to flatline soon. It turned out the doctor, Jeremiah John, was a charlatan.
Jeremiah John's rags to riches story will certainly be an all time best seller so why is the man listed in New York Forbes Magazine as worth $50 million shying from telling the world his epic life transformation story?
On their 1992 Assets Declaration form Mr and Mrs Rawlings were worth a mere 300,000 worthless old cedis.The big unanswered question on the lips of discerning, both partisan and non-partisan ghanaians is how in God's name were they able to acquire properties like GIHOC Cannery, GNTC Bakeries,GIHOC Brick and Tile,GNTC Supermarket through the 31st December Women's Movement and shares in La Palm Pleasure Beach Hotel,not to mention assets including lands that they're unable to hide from public knowledge and curiosity?
In a fiery speech during the earlier part of the failed revolution Rawlings lamented how the majority poor ghanaians could ill afford 'Saito' education for their kids yet the wealthy and elite were sending their kids to expensive Ivy League schools in the US and Europe. Years later after sending his own kids to the same elite schools he not only refused to disclose the source of funding for the kids' education when questioned by ghanaians who felt let down but added he will disclose no such information even under oath.
The current spate of massive corruption in the corridors of power and the everyday petty corruption that is pervasive among the rank and file of ghanaian society would have been long forgotten if Rawlings had stuck to his guns. You see the morally bankrupt do not have the guts to speak against others for fear of being exposed.After denouncing capitalism the new kids on the block embraced socialism and cocooned themselves in asceticism. Later as they did a 180, corruption became more blatant among the apostles of probity, transparency and accountability and they not only eroded the niche they had earlier carved for themselves but evolved to the nouveaux riches status and enroled in the elitist club they once hated with a passion.
