  It is the MOST obvious truth that we lack a lot of things including the engineering and technical know how and the DISCIPLINE and managerial acumen to run these very VITAL state institutions.

  Why sell . The market is there and we have a so called party that espouses free enterprise. Full of wealthy people. Why do they not get in and invest. Why sell to outsiders all the time. NPP must live the talk. Are they free enterprisers or not. Nkrumah was a socialist and so used his socilaist ideology to build all the entities you mentioned. Why does the NPP not demonstrte to us its commitment to free enterprise by bringing in more. That is how the economy will grow. Competence will come from competition another tenet of free enterprise. So guys bring on the competion. I hate the noise. Why do we not have an Airways nor a shipping line despite the NPP noise? Let actions speak

  Hello Kofi, your idea is plausible and i think it is the only way Ghana can be freed from these resourceless,mal-functioning companies that are run by visionless people. However, i do not totally agree that only Japanese should be chosen as the sole savers of our energy sector. There must be competition in this sector so that high level of service delivery at lower costs to the final consumer can be assured. Choosing Japanese as the sole operators will develop monopolistic tendencies that will not be different from what we are experiencing today. Let's privatise the energy sector to various entities from different countries. By competing with each other the only winner will be consumer. Just look at the mobile/telecommunication sector and you'll understand my point. God save Mother Ghana!!

  They opposed national independence! They opposed African Unity! They opposed Akosombo Dam! They closed down factories! They shut down and later looted state farms! They said Soviet fishing trawlers were bad - but sold them to a British businessman who came all the way from Europe! Such is the Danquah-Busia man and his mentality! No confidence in his ability to do anything. Beg, beg, beg the whiteman to build a toilet for him. Sell his gold mines, telecoms, oil fields hotels...to the whiteman for peanuts, give, give, give to the whiteman then go flying overseas with begging bowl in hand every other week! Such is the Danquah-Busia man and his mentality!

  The reason why we are where we are is that because VRA, ECG, GRIDCO and BPA are all engineering institutions we tend to put engineers in charge. Apart from the generation and distribution to the consumer, all the other functions to enable those companies to do the engineering, production and distribution is purely a management and finance function. I'm not saying that the engineers cannot manage but they are predisposed to look for engineering solutions instead of business solutions to the problem. I see the problem of the energy companies as a business one and not an engineering one. They have wrong business model and therefore are losing money. They should be properly financially engineered and we will see reasonable tariffs and better efficiency.

  Brilliant proposal, but who is listening? Is there anyone courageous enough in the ruling party to push this proposal through and get it implemented as soon as possible. In the UK a similar happening took place in the '80's when the public utilities were all privatised by the Thatcher govt. the British have not regretted it while the utilities sector is growing from strength to strength under private ownership.

  If inefficiency, ineffectiveness, bribery and corruption are grounds to get rid of government run entities then I suggest we farm-out/contract vendors to be our parliamentarians as well. The rot in Ghana starts with our parliamentarians, judiciary and the presidency not solely with the civil service and other institutions. Our parliament is responsible for appropriation of funds to all sectors of government ministries and or institutions. It is parliament that can set accountability measures, practices and procedures for all agencies to adhere to. It is parliament that must empanel wise men and women to formulate plans that can be basis for the implementation of better models (operations and services) for Ghana’s utility agencies (water, electricity, oil/petroleum deliveries). Ghana lost its national airline, telecommunications infrastructure and even our own oil thanks to Kufour who can now fly everywhere in the world after only 8 years of work in government.
  There are those who have worked all their lives in the civil service and cannot retire on decent retirement benefits packages yet we have come to accept in your face thievery by the courts, parliament and the executive branch as a norm. Do we know of any country that holds out tin cups for collection just to meet basic needs while they pay these high sums of money for mediocrity from its elected officials? Yes we do but they are all countries in Africa (or let me say t in the crude way only countries run bay blacks for black folks. It is on our continent that has seen South African whites create a better life for South Africans while every other nation gets screwed by their own so-called black people. It is only fools who think privatization saves everyone and everything. Privatization brings greed and disdain for the poor but most importantly selfishness that becomes a norm. In most developed nation (UK, France. Italy US, Canada, Spain and etc ) we read and heard of privately owned businesses ask for favors/sacrifices from all its citizens and yet as they get rich they tend to hide their money in other countries so they do not have to pay their fair share of taxes. And if slavery is what we want to generate efficiency then look no further; we have our parliamentarians who work few hours and yet collect their wages and their transportation allowances prior to majority of civil servants getting paid for their basic monthly pay. What Ghana needs is good managers without political connections and or the-who-you-know linkages that have been built on tribal allegiances.

  I agree with private participation - e.g. sell 60% to private interests as is being done currently in Nigeria. Only we must sell TRANSPARENTLY not cheaply as was done with Ghana Telecom.

  Forget it. These utilities are the politician's most lucrative cash cow. None of them will sell them except to themselves.
