Nana is leading the present petition at the SC because he WAS the candidate of the party. He is not doing so as the leader of the party. He is not. We are no longer practising a cabinet system of govt where a party chooses s leader who becomes PM if the party wins a majority of seats in parliament and the leader wins his constituency seat. In our presidential system where a party is not in power, its effective leader is the chairnan, not the losing oresidential cabdidate. So Akufo is not NPP leader!

Given the closeness of the votes, Alan would have gotten a margin that would hv been difficult to use fraud to overcome. Alan's only problem would hv been his Ashanti connection. Some people would say it was too early for an Asante so soon after K4.
But no one would have acussed Alan of being arrogant, having smoked wee or losing his certificates in strange circumstances.
But Alan showed bad judgement in his quest for WTO top job. He was the least qualified of the contestants, Ghana didn't have the support of most African states who thought Ghana was being greedy in seeking too many international posts. Alan should hv withdrawn his candidature early instead of being ignominiously bundled out at the first hurdle even before the voting proper started!
Perhaps he is a loser but he is a more likeable person than Akufo who carries too much baggage!

It has been my way or highway. Before Kufour brought him from the States, he was not known in any quarters. However, because of JAK and his Asante connection, he was propelled from the backseat to the front seats of the party.
See, how he withdrew from the party because he was defeated. It is the same reason why he did not want to withdraw from WTO top job. The Kenyan woman was far more experienced than Alan and yet, he kept on with the divided house.
Bawumia should be given the chance to lead the party. He can partner with a GA or Fante. The Asante and Akyem Mafias should be sidelined for a long time, if need be, a BRONG man should be picked for the Veep position and not any more Asante and Akyem person- this to stop those who love to use the tribal card to deceive the people without any policies.

For one reason, even though I do not hate the Asante/Akyem mafia, I like the Northerners, the Brong, Ga, Fante and of course Ada and Ewe at the top of NPP to reflect the Ghanaian dream and pride. There is no place for any sectionalist /partisan groups in Ghana. Having said that, I think your advice, if taken can kill the NDC or give them too much trouble.
But I like it because all parties could be committed to a vigorous centralist/pluralist agenda. More so, smaller parties could hold trump cards as both NPP and NDC could be reenergised by coalition desires.

A commodities boom, abundant foreign currency reserves, a democratically elected government and a new generation of educated young people endowed with huge potential. Sounds familiar? I am actually describing the Ghana of 1957.
It is perhaps hard for young people today to imagine how optimistic my generation was at the time of independence. Ours was one of the richest countries in Africa.
Like today, our raw materials were in high demand. Our national income was comparable to South Korea’s, and our prospects were among the best in what was then called the “under-developed world.”
Yet, 30 years later, South Korea's annual income per head had risen to 10 times that of Ghana’s. It eventually joined the OECD club of rich nations while we hope to become a “middle-income” country only by 2015. Our early hopes were dashed by exclusionary politics, poor economic management and corruption, which created and perpetuated political instability.
Since then, we have steadily regained lost economic ground and become a stable democracy, organising a series of credible elections, leading to peaceful transfers of power. We can be proud of these achievements. Once again, Ghana’s youth is full of hope in the future.
With oil coming on stream, and strong exports of other commodities, our economy is growing at a vigorous eight per cent, and we have a second chance to raise Ghana into the world’s premier league within a generation.
But for this upbeat scenario to come true this time, we must not score own-goals”. We have to invest the revenues from our natural resources and agriculture into health, education and infrastructure for the benefit of all Ghanaians. We must make the most of our second chance,

Koo Nimo, I understand Alan is half from Central or Western region. There is nothing wrong with being 100 percent Asante.
Daniel, that is a very interesting article. How and what legal means could have been used by NPP to stop Mahama's investiture as suggested by you? There was no option for that as the 1992 Constitution is emphatically clear on this. The President elect as declared by the Electoral Commission shall be sworn into office irrespective of any petition challenging his or her election. Had NPP resorted to your suggestion, Nana Akufo-Addo and his close associates and the party would have lost the last vestiges of their democratic credentials.

The law in its current form is very flawed. How do we inaugurate a new president when the opposition deems it necessary to challenge the results of an election? Of course, a challenge can have legal grounds, and it can also be frivolous, which is why the Supreme Court exists to separate the wheat from the chaff. If neither Mahama nor Akufo-Addo had incumbency, this case would simply not have dragged on for 7 months! In other words, the Supreme Court has the capacity to resolve post-election dispute within a reasonable time frame, if it chooses to do so.
I still think that Mahama's investiture should have been delayed, until the case was resolved. But since he's been inaugurated, the NPP should lick its wounds and prepare better for future contests. Ultimately, the Constitution needs to be revised, since events sometimes inform ought to be done, going forward.

Without mincing words, the Ghanaian Taxpayer loses nothing when Nana Akufo-Addo has to replace Ministers, when successful to implement our NPP Programme.
Furthermore, tell us how many times your MAHAMA has changed his MInisters and other appointees since he was MISTAKENLY sworn in as "President"??
WE as a party are very much determined to follow the legal processes of our Electoral Law through the Law Courts as enshrined in our Constitution for a redress. And we are determined to prevail.
Unfortunately, people like yourself may find it boring and would have prefered WAR to attract the world attention.
The present Court proceedings and other matters arising make your mention of the so called International Observers' acceptance of the Election laughable.
This is because, those International Observers don't form part and parcel of our Electoral Precesses but were only there to ensure NO one was disenfranchised.
I am particularly SURE that our Electoral Process through many uncanning and DUBIOUS ways had been tampered with, to indirectly disenfranchise Millions without the knowledge of those "honest" International Observers.
This is more the reason why one of the Justices on the Bench dismissed the assertion on the grounds that they were looking for IRREGULARITIES, etc.
In fact I struggle to understand why people like yourself find Nana Akufo-ddo so threatening to lead our Ntion Ghana. Is it because he is so Principled, Incorruptible, Honest, Hard Working,Democratic and Patriotic???
These are the true fundamentals for anyone to reach the echelon of any given society as a President.
Please do accept from me that Alan Kyeremateng is one of us in the Party. And when his time comes, it would be up to our Electoral College of our Party to decide.
At the moment, I can assure you he is continentaly behind Dr. Bawumia and few others.

Francis,
There's a reason I carefully sidestepped the details of the actual petition before the Supreme Court, because we are not privy to all the facts of the case. What we see on television does not constitute ALL of the intricacies of the case.
It is possible that Akufo-Addo won the election, but why are NPP supporters writing articles calling Mahama a thief when they have no such proof? Many of these writers live in the U.S.A. and the U.K., and what they know about the case is what they read online! This is what I mean by irrationality on the part of certain NPP loyalists.
You know me well enough to know that I am not a card-carrying member of the NDC; in fact, I have always had greater sympathies toward the NPP, although I am not a card-carrying member either.
I strongly predict that the results of Election 2012 will NOT be overturned by the SC, for the reasons I stated in my article. What the NPP needs to do now is to begin preparing for Election 2016, with the hopes that a credible candidate, who has national appeal, can unseat John Mahama. Waiting until 6 months before Election 2016 to begin preparations is not the way to win a national election! And this sense of entitlement some of us have must stop! A lot of the opposition to Mahama has to do with his place of birth, although these nasty folks will deny it, for fear of being labeled ethnocentrists. But that's the truth, and we need to move away from this pettiness! Mahama is qualified to lead Ghana, which is why he is where he is today.

Daniel, what you are advocating is already in process. As a result of the Supreme Court case, Dr. Bawumia has clearly exposed himself as the candidate to beat in 2016. For that matter, NPP is already preparing for 2016 with Dr. Bawumia as their top tier candidate - thanks to his superb performance before the Supreme Court; believe me if you were not hunkered in Fairfax, you would already know that Dr. Bawumia has carved out a fantastic credibility for 2016 on behalf of NPP. Everyone in the nation knows about Dr. Bawumia in a positive way as a result of coverage by GTV. Alan has no place and very little known by the majority of Ghanaians, be it NDC or NPP. Some of the over irrational NPP Parachicks have offended the masses of our people, Nkrumah's Ghanaians to the extent that, no amount of going or sleeping at the wailing wall will mitigate the fury and anger of the commonners against the so called "rich and nation wreckers" of our country!!!
Even OBAMA with his charm and charisma did not insult the American electorates before they voted for him!!
There are fundamental problems with the NPP which when not addressed head long as Dr. Wereko Brobbey and others have stood for but with frail protests would never ever get them anywhere!!
How on earth, come to think of it, that a party that is vying to be elected will have long mouth to shout and insult people and threaten may hem where possible in a country that does not think and support any fracticidal wars!! Think about how Victor Owusu spoke lousily in the parliament of the what he perceived of the Ewes!!! In the 21st century, an NPP "guru" could say they should beat up the heads of the Ewes and Gas in the Ashanti region and yet, know that, these tribes cannot be cowed to vote for the NPP, even when they are not well!! How much more when they are well and strong and do not depend on the NPP for their daily bread!!!
Do people learn from history at all!! Victor Owusu was allegedly sacrificed some sheep to obviate that statement he might have made "jokingly" or otherwise to demean the Ewes!!! Hmmmm!! He will forever remember that not all things are said with askance!!
How come Nana Akuffo Addo could ask the Voltains why they vote one way???
Why did he not ask the Ashanti region and the Eastern region same unnecessary question!! At least he(Nana) knows that there are more sensitive and knowledgeable citizens of Ghana in the Volta Region who are quiet but listen and observe the political lanscape with critical alacrity!!
The Kuffour regime victimised some Ewes to the chagrin of casual political observers!! Deputy Director of the Migration was punished with careless and heartless abandon. Some people were hauled to prison even though their lawyers were out of the country!! Some Ewes died in prison as a result of the vengeance Kuffour and Nana Addo meted out to the Ewes, not forgetting Selormey!! May his soul rest in perfect Peace.
How on earth can we allow some people who are nearer to Akuffo Addo to write and insult some elements of the Ewes and generalise in an unacademic fashion just to show empty power!! The Akyem mafia and their surrogates in the US are the worst offenders!! Up till now, some of the NPP bad guys do not know it is not the Ewes directly who are in power!! Yet still, for personl satisfaction of how "important" they feel they are or might be, can insult anyone just any time and in any manner!!
If the Nkrumah government did not initiate a good educational policy, the northerners would still be cattle herders??? Allah should forgive these NPP loud mouthed politicians who forget they are equally human and are nobodies in the actual fact. Such abominable statemets about Ewes, Northerners, Gas cannot be forgotten!! Oh!! It cannot be forgiven. So if all these regions feel the belligerency of a party might take Ghanaians to the gutters, how can they vote for such "overlords". In our culture, the Ewes culture, no woman who bleeds on monthly basis and knows she is a proper woman ever insults the an Ewe man!!! So the problem of the NPP is very deep!!
Do the NPP often have a Presidential candidate that has a national appeal and can be a unifier?? Why are the NPP choosing people from the Akyem-Ashanti enclave for 20 years running of our democratic experiment!! Hmmmmm!! Infact, Ghanaians are the most intelligent votesr one can come across on the planet!!! Come to think of a population of about 30-35% illiterates who understand the nuances and intricacies of the geo-politics of Ghana and are prepared to bring a change in leadership and people who can bring benefits ot our dear nation stand resolutely in the sun for hours on end to bring out a change should be resppected by all and sundry.
The Bible says "thou shalt not exalt thyself". Do the NPP political pundits succumb to this humble law???
If not, the NPP should not be looking elsewhere for the decadence and problems which are self inflicted . Our country needs social cohesion! An amalgam of good brains of Ghanaians are the requisite panacea to our problems of development. Not a section who can arrogate to themselves the super knowledge, either school or native wisdom to ever sort all the problems of our dear nation. We saw under Kuffour what happened when he gave most of the post or leadership positions to his tribesmen!!! Ghana at 50!! We all saw how Ghana Telecom was sold!!! We all saw the liquidation of the Ghana Airways and how the property belonging to Ghanains were shared among cronies!!! Please, for once, all parties should humble themselves !! It can be seen that the NDC at least since the inception of the nnew Democratic dispensation (1992) there have been an Ewe, a Fante and now a Northerner at the helm of Affairs!! Why can't similar thing be said of NPP???
Isn't Ghana for all Ghanaians?? Or some are more equal!!! Ghana is bigger and more important than a few or just an individual. Insults on tribal basis lacks the proper modicul for development!! How can epople discuss issues by just insults!!
We have a long way to go!! The truth is that all Ghanaians and especially the political elites who want to be public officers one day must eschew virtue which is national in character, by being each other's keeper!!! Ghanaian masses are watching!!! Long live Ghana!! Long live Osagyefo's spirit and long live JJ rawlings for bringing a new discourse in our country's democratic order!!Accountability, probity and transparency and social justice will always be the haul mark of JJ in our moral persuasion and tenets of DEMOCRACY. Ghana must develop!!

I wonder how many Political activists, like Quainoo, can claim to be so absolutely certain that only what they believe could be the truth, the only opinion that could be incontrovertibly true, in every issue?
It is even more disturbing that such activists would ascribe to others expressing views contrary to theirs some dubious betrayal of the others' integrity and moral principles. Why couldn't Daniel express a different opinion from that of these activists unless he had been PAID by a Political camp which opposes that of the activists?
I would like note that it is undoubtedly insulting to Daniel for Francis to bluntly suggest that about him, even though I am no appointed 'pocket lawyer' of Daniels. Yet, the former chose to respond to Francis in a much admirably polished way that diffuses the potential for a vengeful cycle of invectives between the two. That show of constraint by Daniel is worthy of emulation by us all, even though we must not mistaken that to be some sign of weakness on the part of Daniel.
Quainoo's attitude of imputing such malfeasance to Daniel just because Daniel expresses an opposing view to Quainoo's could be seen by some as only typifying the charge of intolerance in NPP.
It very much seems these activists who prefer to dowse insults on opponents tend to believe being irrationally vitriolic and insulting elevates their eminence in our marketplace of ideas.
Those insults are nothing but irresponsible means to intimidate or suppress others with contrarian views and do not signify enhancement or maturity in our democratic dispensation.
I hope we should all endeavor to abstain from those "takashi" tactics. No amount of needless threats of "onya e sorme", and even of physical assault with teeth-gnashing howls of "mayibo, onu" should deter folks with genuine desire to contribute constructively to our Nation's well-being.
We should all wait for the SC verdict and accept it to move on in Peace. It could be most helpful for the Nation, I believe, for the NPP to re-organize and use lessons learnt from the various revelations in the case on the electoral process to enhance its chances of winning future elections. The cannibalistic attitude of stridently antagonizing one another just for a difference of opinion, can only break up a front.
Long Live Ghana!!!

Greetings Danny:
Ambition, courage and sound judgement are vital for anyone who seeks to be a leader, however integrity is the supreme quality for leadership as D. Eisenhower said some years ago. Where is Allan's integrity among the faithfuls in his own party, lest alone the among people? Was he not the who threw tantrum and decided to leave the party because he felt he was cheated during their primaries. Did not Akufo and some men in his party go down on their knees to beg him to come back? And do you think such a person is good enough to be a leader in our Winner-takes-all democracy? I doubt it.
As we pray for Madiba for long life, did it occur to you that the reason why the whole world is praying for Madiba is not only about his courage, endurance, or passion as a leader, but as an honest, tolerant and peaceful person who can sit down at the table and share a meal with his enemies? Do you consider Allan to be honest, tolerant, and peaceful to share a meal with the Akyem mafia in NPP, let alone with people like Ablakwa, Koku, Kobby Acheampong, Anita Zousa and the rest of insulting brigade in NDC? I have my reservations; I see a swollen-headed narcissistic intolerant person who has no vision except to put cash in the pockets of people by any means necessary. NPP comeback does not need Allan or any of the Akyem/Ashanti divide but an honest young man from anywhere to lead the party; meaning their winning depends more on Strategy rather than a personality of their leader and that strategy is to tap into the Central and Greater Region electorates.
On the supreme court case, I do agree with you that the petitioners will not win the case. However, we have to know that the supreme court has no right to declare Akufo the President of the Nation. The worst they could do is to cancel the results or re-count the votes in certain constituencies. Then even, if Akufo is lucky to get that chance, I doubt he would win election. Fact, NPP will never win any election unless they are able to win Central or/and Accra.
I however disagree with your positions on reasons why Akufo's presidency will bring "calamity" to the Nation. Firstly, there is no loopholes in the constitution to stop the inauguration of the President-elect: this is the reason why many have advocated that our election should be moved back to November to give more room for 2nd or 3rd round or a case like this, but unfortunately they have all fallen on deaf ears.
2ndly, about when Akufo's administration starts if elected after winning the petition is mute. Dates could be changed at anytime and the same SC that allowed it will set up dates for voters to elect and inaugurate him. I would rather worry my head over the financial burden of the State.
3rdly, why do you even have to think of commanding or receiving respect from the Armed Forces; I can't understand it. Are we still under military rule or what? What right have they got that the electorate don't have? Or, are you saying the Military is somehow aligned with NDC more than the NPP? I don't get it.
4thly, the retirement plans are already in place. Have you forgotten about the handsomely ex-gratia for Presidents and Ministers that serve the Nation? since they would have served less than a year, 1/4 of their ex-gratia would be enough. Mahama will still get his share because he would be forever known as ex-President for the Period he served.
5thly, like I said, since our democracy is winner-takes-it-all and did not have problem in accepting Mahama's appointment of more than half of his ministers from his Northern Area, I don't see why we should even think of who will be Akufo's ministers should he wins any re-election proposed by the SC.
Lastly, I don't see why Akufo Addo should be blamed for the longevity of this petition. You cited Kenyan's petition, but you failed to let the people know that Kenyan SC rejected other parties to be part of the suit- they only allowed their EC and the President to be part of the suit, so why blame Akufo? Also, you failed to talk about Atuguba and his bench who allowed Tsatsu 15 days to question about pink sheets which eventually end by calling KPMG to count those sheets. Could that have been done in less than 2 days if he suspected any duplicates or triplicates? What actually did he achieve in that 15 days? Yes, the people are getting fed up with the petition but I don't see why Akufo alone should share the blame, the Supreme Court not knowing when to stop the lawyers from stupid questions and Tsatsu who started the insults in the SC, with his boring 15 days questions on pink sheets are probably the reasons why the people are fed up. Remember, Akufo has his constitutional rights to petition any election "fraud" against him; it is incumbent on SC to hasten the petition. So if your support for Allan is based on Akufo's petition, then you are backing the wrong horse.

On these pages, I have said that Akufo made a mistake of not coming out quickly to denounce Ken Agyapong on his outbursts. It was stupid to waiting for months before going to Volta to talk to the chiefs; that was an insult to the Ewes, as if they are controlled by their chiefs. I could care less whether Voltarians will vote for him or not. But to a President of the Nation, you must be seen as someone who is for everyone and not only for some people. Without rejecting the stupidity coming from Ken Agyapong outright, he paved the way for others to believe that he was only there for the Asantes and Akyems and his Nima girls.
Anyone who becomes the head of NPP should make it loud and clear to Ken Agyapong, Ursula, Appiah Ofori and Sir Charles or whatever to zip it during the entire election. Anytime any of these people say something against anybody or group of people, they need to reject them outright and ask them to be part of your campaign.
We the people need someone who will bring all of us together. I don't think Mahama is the right person to do that after seeing his selection of the people and how he has allowed rhetoric coming from his people to the opposition.
Selecting Bawumia, or/and anyone from GA, or the Central Region should be their priority.

Is Kyerematen's ability to govern based on his being from Ashanti Region, or his being a smart, educated Ghanaian? I think the latter is more important. We have to move away from statements such as "Because Kufuor is from Ashanti, it is too early for another Asante to run ..." That sort of thing makes our democracy the loser. Let's pursue competence, rather where a person was born.
Besides, Kyerematen is half-Fante, so he has clout in that part of the country as well. But, ultimately, we need to focus on the person's qualifications, rather the family into which the person was born.

People argue that Kyerematen is not a good choice, because he resigned from the party once, citing the "persecution" of his followers as the reason for his action. We should also not forget that Bawumia left the country after Election 2008, only to return shortly before Akufo-Addo chose his running mate for Election 2012. In other words, Bawumia was not around when other NPPians were working hard to prepare for Election 2012. In my opinion, Bawumia has not shown that he loves the NPP the way you'd expect a presidential aspirant would. In other words, Bawumia has not earned becoming the NPP's 2016 presidential candidate ahead of Kyerematen, or any other person, for that matter.

The only combination that can defuse the tribal label NDC love to tag on NPP is to go for a GA or FANTE or Northerner. Strategically, Bawumia is good for the party; he has become the darling boy of the party and NPP people have come to love him. So your choice is very reasonable. And being a Moslem to head the Nation, the electorates would think twice before putting all their eggs in one basket. And a lady from Accra, Nii and his people will be silenced.
You see, Alan is being supported by NDC and they have already started making campaign for him. Yet, when the campaigns begin, the Asante/Akan label will be used by the NDC to discredit the party. Make no mistakes, he is half Fante and even stay and went to school in that area, but he is known as an Asante man in every corner, despite calling himself a Fanti Man.
Your choice is very, very smart. But I doubt, NPP will listen.

This was the reason why I thought they should have not invited Alan back when he left the party. At that time, he couldn't have formed another party. But as it is now, he stands the chance of dividing the party into two and that is why NDC is doing the damnedest best to use him in every other way to split up the party.
You and I know that the Akyem Mafia will not support Alan's ticket anywhere. With his ego, he might try to form another and bring back the ghost of PFP and UNC to hurt the party. They need to wise up. But I do agree that with that choice, he could sit back unconcerned as much as he wants, the party could win easily.

The petition has no basis on electoral fraud, rigging, stealing or malpratice if I may say.The initial comments made by the petitioners was that Prez Mahama and Dr Afari Gyan cheated Nana Addo and they are going to court to seek for redress. They also made it clear that Nana Addo won the election by 60% of the vote cast.As a matter of fact, they are demanding the court to throw away over 4 million votes cast.According to Bawumia,Prez Mahama is not responsible for the stealing but on the face of the pink sheets tell a different story of invalid votes.Dr Afari Gyan has refuted Bawumia's allegation altogether by saying there were some few errors here and there but the declared results was not stolen from Nana Addo to Prez Mahama because the evidence brought to court is insufficient. Now,Tsatsu has exploited the evidence given by Bawumia on the face of the pink sheets. The petitioners did not file their case properly,so many allegations were abandoned, ghost polling stations and STL etc. Therefore, all the pink sheets are in a mess. When you talk of the amendment and quantity of pink sheets,we really don't know where the petitioners are going with all these errors. You cannot win a Supreme Court case with errors in your evidence, that must be clear.Considering the unnecessary tension and the anxiety in the country.I think it will be in the best interest of Nana Addo to withdraw his petition honourably. He has also committed many errors in his petition by false allegation and mispresentation of documents.Thank you.

It is too late in the day for NPP to withdraw. They must pursue the case to the end so that all Ghanaians see who is being frivolous. What we should pray for is for the decision to be expedited. And most importantly, no matter who wins, we should all know what faults were really made so that we can know how to avoid them next time. And we should also know why the party that lost the case did so - cleanly.
I predict a split decision in favour of the current incumbent not because he truly won but because who truly won will be difficult to really establish and the justices clearly have their own biases. NPP will need an overwhelmingly clear evidence in their favour to be given the nod. That will be difficult for them to establish.
But let the case end soon so that we can all together help to push our country forward until the next elections when the lessons learnt now will be fully deployed.
We are a nation in a hurry!!!

Danny boy, this is a very interesting article. The examination of Nana Akufo-Addo's leadership, his political vulnerabilities, analysis of NPP's petition at the Supreme Court, the overview and presumed acceptance of Ghana's 2012 General Election results by the International Observers, and your reasons and logic for an eventual 'rubberstamp' of NDC's victory by the Supreme Court will ,no doubt, be greeted by with a whole realm of disagreement and question of your motive.
Generally, the 2012 Elections were characterised by fraud and voting malpractices. And if anything at all, the NPP leadership have themselves to blame. What lessons were learnt from the experiences of the 2008 General Election defeat? Personally, I have the feeling that regardless of NPP's substantial claims of vote-rigging in favour of President John Mahama, I don't see the Supreme Court overturning EC's declaration and John Mahama's victory. In the end, either the margin of fraud will be statistically insignificant to annul the results, hand Nana Akufo-Addo the Presidency or there will be 'external' influences not to overturn President John Mahama's victory. Of course, it's also entirely possible that the Supreme Court could hand the Presidential victory to Nana Akufo-Addo based on the strength of its evidence.
Should the Supreme Court's final verdict go against NPP and Nana Akufo-Addo, this will trigger an NPP leadership contest as Nana's position will be untenable. Is Mr Alan Kyerematen NPP's desired candidate? I think at the moment, Dr Bawumia is a real contender. Alan WILL NOT BE OFFERED THE LEADERSHIP of the Party. Alan HAS TO CONTEST FOR IT. To roll out a "Red Carpet" for Alan Kyerematen could only worsen NPP's infighting between the Akyem-Akan factions. There is a very plausible possibility that Nana Akufo-Addo will support Dr Bawumia's bid. Alan is ex-President Kufour's protégé. And there are those with the same ambition lying low at the moment. One thing for sure is the fact that any leadership contest poses awkward challenges to NPP. However, Dr Bawumia whose popularity has surged during this on-going petition should be considered a very real contender to lead the NPP.

Great observation! Yes, Kyerematen should not be installed the party's candidate for 2016, but I know he wants the job, and I believe he'll seek it. Bawumia remains a strong contender as well, but, as I argued elsewhere, he abandoned the party's struggles after Election 2008, only to return four years later, when Akufo-Addo called on him to be his deputy going into Election 2012. That, in my opinion, does not show that Bawumia puts party first! In other words, this wholehearted affirmation of Bawumia by some as the next NPP candidate is unwarranted. Let him sell himself, and if the party loyalists want him, they'll "tell him" so at the party's congress! But no one should tag Kyerematen as Asante or a Kufuor protégé, and for that he is disqualified from running. The guy will be running on merit, not because Kufuor likes him, or because his mother is Asante! I pray that Ghanaians would move away from these ethnic matters and evaluate candidates based on competence.

This is an excellent analysis of the post-election stand-off. Though I visit Ghanaweb every day, I hardly read any articles fully because most of them are nothing to write home about. But even less is my willingness to read about the case at the Supreme Court predictably because I do not wish to suffer gladly the “irascible simpletons” with their hackneyed, puerile and very stupid views. I read your article fully because I knew that even it does not reflect my stance it will, nevertheless, throw up something sensible for discussion and I am not wrong. You have rationalized every aspect of the case in a very intelligent and logical manner.
Your rhetorical question, “Do we not care?”,to me, evokes the banality of the case. The petitioners claim their quest is to deepen democracy but they have hardly indicated anywhere that they are purveyors of democracy to want to deepen it. Till now, they have not apologized for preferring wrong charges against NDC by claiming NDC was faxjacking the result. If they did not maliciously contrive this allegation, why have they not raised it in Court.
Kudos for your enthralling observations made against the backdrop of a flawless written communication.

The SC has no power to elect the president of Ghana. They can only refer the case back to the EC, in case they see evidence of massive fraud. If the EC is made up of a bunch of untrustworthy thugs, then one can expect them to repeat the same mantra.
2. If it is true that Dr. Raymond Akongburo Atuguba, the Executive Secretary to President Mahama, is a relative of Justice Atuguba, then it would be very unlikely, if not highly impossible, for Justice Atuguba and his colleagues to decide otherwise even in the face of overwhelming evidence. As you know in Ghana, one good turn deserves another.
3. Akans are the most disunited people in the country. They are united among their various tribes only. The Ashantis for instance, are wary of a win by Akufo Addo since he is close to a throne they consider to be their rival. They fear that his victory would help elevate the throne. That was also part of the reason why former president Kuffour tried to push his brother to be the presidential candidate in place of Akufo-Addo.
4. The international community is generally comfortable with Mahama,a conciliatory technocrat just a but different from late Atta-Mills. U.S. and the west generally do not trust Akufo-Addo. For instance, it is believed that he plans to renegotiate to possibly increase Ghana's current 10% share in the oil/petroleum agreement. This does not go well with them.
---
The NPP generally made a mistake for allowing the train to pass by before beginning to chase it. If they were sure of their allegation of irregularities and fraud, they should have approached the case more vigorously and even blocked the inauguration of the president-elect until the case was resolved. As the case stands, even with quantum efforts, the only likely scenario is that the case may help to address "some" of the elections malpractices.
Nana is leading the present petition at the SC because he WAS the candidate of the party. He is not doing so as the leader of the party. He is not. We are no longer practising a cabinet system of govt where a party chooses s ...
