Kwesi Atta,
What an excellent discourse in Fantsi that illustrates the need for Ghanaians and Africans to write our their own languages.
Even as I praise the writing and speaking of all key issues of national importance in our own African languages (in courts, parliament, all ministries of state, key national celebrations, etc) the reason for saying so becomes vividly expressed in the irony of commenting in English, the language of our colonisers.
A lot of Ghanaians/Africans, including myself, can write and speak fluently in the the language of the colonisers (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, etc). Yet, struggle to read, understand and write in their own languages. For example I can read this article by Kwesi Atta, but only slowly. This is because all our leaders have made it a national policy to conduct all school and administrative processes in the languages of the imperialist countries that once colonised us. This is wrong and must be changed.
The time has come to change the above policy, to debate the use of local languages at all levels of communication. The content of speaking and writing in local languages must be increased in all our institutions of learning, and across board to all national institution.
Why? Because we will be able to communicate more fully in our own languages. The full nuances, inflections, philosophies and wisdom in-bedded in our languages will be released in all areas of communication. We can write first in our languages and translate what we say in foreign languages - just like we confidently do vise versa. All major cultures in the world write and speak in their own languages. The Chinese, Indians, Europeans, etc write purely in their native languages. It has not blunted their national development in the art, social and natural sciences. It has elevated them.
There has been major debates between literary heavy weights in Africa (Ngu Wa Thiong', Wole Soyinka, Ayie Kwei Armah, Chenua Achebe and others) on the pros and cons of using African and European languages. Ng?g? has voted with his feet and is probably the only major African writer who has stopped writing in English. He now writes only in his native Kikuyu languages:
"Ng?g? wa Thiong'o (Gikuyu pronunciation: [??o?e wa ði???]; born 5 January 1938)[1] is a Kenyan writer, formerly working in English and now working in Gikuyu. His work includes novels, plays, short stories, and essays, ranging from literary and social criticism to children's literature. He is the founder and editor of the Gikuyu-language journal M?t?iri.
In 1977, Ng?g? embarked upon a novel form of theatre in his native Kenya that sought to liberate the theatrical process from what he held to be "the general bourgeois education system", by encouraging spontaneity and audience participation in the performances. His project sought to "demystify" the theatrical process, and to avoid the "process of alienation [that] produces a gallery of active stars and an undifferentiated mass of grateful admirers" which, according to Ng?g?, encourages passivity in "ordinary people".
Well done Kwesi Atta!

Like you Kofi of Africa, it took me a long time to read throgh the first three paragraphs and then I gave up. I did not give up because it was boring but not being a Fanti (or Fantse)I had difficulty giving the right intonation to understand what I was reading. All the same i congratulate the author on what he has done. Others, like Prof. Lungu can emulate him, even if it was meant as a criticism from Prof. Lungu. This exercise will help to enrich our diverse culture. So, again, well done Kwesi Atta!

Kofi, you are a star. Your writing marks you out not only as a patriot but also as an erudite literary giant, well educated and widely read. Other commentators who are not Fante perceive this writing as a subtle attempt to keep them out and they fume and rage. Well we should be proud of who we are and where we are coming from. That is the import and essence of writing in Fante to rub it in and send the message of being ethocentric and culturally sensitive. Thanks a lot for your thought-provoking

Urbanization is bringing so much mixing in Ghana that it is worthwhile for every Ghanaian to know one of the major Ghanaian languages. Twi now has become the lingua franca of Accra for all practical purposes.
In any case, the lessons you have been offering are not only educative bus also so entertaining. I'm so glad that you started this and have come back with lesson 2. Y3 d3 wo ase pii na Nyame nhyira wo pii nso!

Well stated, Kwesi. There is a lot of literary beauty in our native languages, and by all means they ought to be popularized and preserved.
BUT, language is just a vehicle. Let's also promote our native PHILOSOPHIES and PHILOSOPHERS. I'm pretty sure Africa is endowed with the likes of David Hume, Aristotle, Lao Tsu, Friedrich Nietzsche, to list just a few. I have come across great Ghanaian thinkers and sages in the villages espousing very deep concepts of life.
Perhaps such native thoughts should be organized and put into books for posterity.
We already know about Akan proverbs and the great ideals behind Adinkra symbols. We could even go higher promoting the much greater thoughts of our people.

Okonko,

Sakyi is making a small effort that ultimately helps to preserve one of our major native languages. His Fantse "lessons" are directed towards all who understand and speak Fantse - regardless of ethnicity. The lessons Sakyi is giving are not even easy for native speakers, like myself, who speak English practically all the time. I tell you also that this type of Fantse is completely different from the conversational variant that is typically spoken and mixed with English. Indeed, after working my way through Sakyi's Fantse "epistles", it sounds so beautiful and also provokes much laughter because of the flowery way this proper, grammatical way of speaking the language translates ordinary English things (nouns) and actions. It is a very rich language, that sounds very poetic and which by its very nature IS BASED ON AND CONSTRUCTED ONLY WITH POLITENESS!!!
I encourage you to start a similar effort in the promotion of your particular native Ghanaian language, if you are so concerned. If you wish to learn Fantse or any other language, please just google it and you will find free online tutorials and dictionaries. You will come across one Akan site started by a Barbados native motivated by the incidence of certain Akan words and expressions that the enslaved Africans from Ghana took to Barbados and are still in use. (e.g."basabasa").
Sakyi's efforts are not tribalist in any way. I am, first and foremost, a PAN AFRICANIST, so I owe no allegiance to any tribe! It is pan-africanist to want to preserve African languages. In the future every Ghanaian schoolchild should be made to learn one indigenous language in school that is not his/her native tongue. I urge you also to read about the Kenyan writer, Ngugi wa Thiongo, and grasp the concept he is trying to promote by writing only in his native Kenyan language, Kikuyu, since the late 70's (or thereabouts).
