  Good article but having worked for an electric utility in Ghana for a long time, I wish I met you to let u understand the practicality of issues raised. Solar u r right we have the resources and av already installed 2.5MW in navro-pungu. The only incentive is an appropriate feed in tariff (FIT). Estimated around 23cents /kWh. Regular tariffs are around 18p. How in God's name will somebody invest in solar without FIT. I do not believe in Nuclear energy now for one simple reason. They are big and even for an interconnected west africa power system, trip from a unit of about 900MW will collapse the entire system. For now the biggest units are Egin in Nigeria (230MW) and Akosombo (165). If a unit in Akosombo trips without operation of AFLS, the entire power syatem Ghana togo benin cote d'ivoire collapses.

  Is it possible to re-send the word version to Ghanaweb and appeal to them to replace what is here now with the word version? I am too sure that in the word version, the page numberings and your footnote on each page etc will not appear.

  Ghana as a country, we need clean energy.We have the sun,we have the sea and we have the winds.Renewable energy is a clean energy and with a good development of solar energy Ghana will be happy as a whole with electricity production in the country.The Hydropower in Ghana is going down and people are lying and playing games with the whole system.They do not pump water to the reservoirs to turn the turbines to produce the electricity the country needs and each day they always put a blame on low level of water.

  Both are need to manufacture..You must have both water and electric for coke, Beer, fruit processing..They all require water to have working toilets!

  Julius, I think your analyses are very simplistic and way too emotional, simply siding with popular opinion and stereotypes. Over 80-90% of the power generated in France is Nuclear. When they were faced with power crisis in the 70s, they turned to Nuclear and have never looked back. Today, French power utilities - EDF/AREVA are leading the charge for Nuclear New Builds, including 4 new plants they are developing here in the UK. The safety/environmental concerns in Nuclear are largely addressed and diminished in the modern fleet of nuclear plants - 3/4 generation reactors. Construction time for some of them is just 4years (from breaking ground) and Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE) over production life is competitive in comparison to fossil-fuel alternatives and renewable energy. Now, the latter may be famed for its environmental credentials but if you consider its limitations especially issues with dispatchability and grid integration, then it is not pragmatic to design an energy policy that is centered on renewables. So, with the high price volatility of fossil fuels and corresponding exposure to geopolitical risks, what are the options?? Nuclear is the Best!!!I Only question is why it has taken so long to start. More nuclear please!!!

  Here are some sattistics from developed UK. Perhaps France being more secretive, is not telling the whole story?
  
  “Between 1950 and 2000 there have been 21 serious incidents or accidents involving some off-site radiological releases that merited a rating on the International Nuclear Event Scale, one at level 5, five at level 4 and fifteen at level 3. Additionally during the 1950s and 1960s there were protracted periods of known, deliberate, discharges to the atmosphere of plutonium and irradiated uranium oxide particulates. These frequent incidents, together with the large 2005 Thorp plant leak which was not detected for nine months, have led some to doubt the effectiveness of the managerial processes and safety culture on the site over the years.”

  The issue is not whether there is hazard from Nuclear. Its a bit like asking whether one's life is endangered by sitting in a car or aeroplane. Of Course!!! My point is, most if not all the examples you have cited have happened in old nuclear plants that used outdated technology (generation 1 and 2). The modern fleet - generation 3 & 4 have very high safety standards that significantly reduces the risks. Ask yourself why the UK has given the go-ahead for 4 new nuclear power plants and why the Asians (Japan, China, Korea and India) are rapidly deploying the same technology. Do you think the authorities there are no aware of the so called dangers of nuclear? No!! The answer is exactly what I mentioned - the modern nuclear plants have been engineered to largely address those issues. Nuclear is far from being perfect, but all factors considered, represents the best means for generating large amounts of baseload power that is environmentally friendly.

  It is important that we assess where Ghana stands on the developmental scale before drawing comparative conclusions. I am no historian but I think France has a very long history involving radioactive substances. Ghana also has a remarkable history for promoting infrastructure decay. Examples are the Adomi Bridge, historical sites, industrial factories, ministerial buildings and offices, waste disposal facilities, etc, etc. Maintenance and renovation processes are alien concepts in Ghana. You build a house and you live in it until it can no longer shield the heavy rains. Then you simply move into the family house, patch your old house and move back in, like we are planning for the Adomi bridge. A nuclear reactor has a will of its own and will not take indolence or lack of budget slack for an excuse. Ghana is not France and will never get close enough to smell that foremost nation's behind.

Use natural gas, oil as stand by or coal...Build more lakes with dams/generators...Every major river in usa has 2-3 dams controlling the flow!

  Solar still seems expensive for a household. A portion of the revenue from oil should be used to built up the electrical grid infrastructure while some type of objective started that involves the installation of solar systems on government schools.
