The universities have failed to produce graduates that can be useful to the nation. A tertiary education does not mean "white collar jobs are waiting for you after graduation". It is a VERY SICK mindset that someone MUST employ you all the time. When you graduate from university, you get into the real world where you learn to use "COMMON SENSE". I like the suggestion that graduates can go and teach but how many want to teach? Teaching is a very honorable job. They are not realistic and want to get jobs that will pay them over 3,000 a month because they "know someone, who knows someone, who knows someone else being paid that salary". The questions they should be asking are:
1. What can you do?
2. What knowledge have you acquired? 3. How useful will you be to any company you wish to work for?
I don't blame the naive graduates, I blame the failed system of education that makes people think it is all about university degrees.

Point well made, but critically look at the argument. I disagree to your statement 'The universities have failed to produce graduates that can be useful to the nation'. Are lawyers, doctors, economist, teachers, bankers, journalists, nurses and others not useful to the nation?? What is common sense?? If common sense is the key to employment, then, no one should be in school.

As in the Western world, there has to be a strong collaboration between government and the private sector towards job creation for our young university graduates. The young and educated segment of the population is our country's most valuable human capital and we cannot afford waste it. Also, our young people need to remember that days are long gone when basic university education was a guarantee for a government job for life. They also have to bear in mind that there is a big difference between being educated and being well educated. Being well educated encompasses being well rounded and being readily prepared to compete in the labour market.

Our private sector , much touted but with no bite is a shame. NPP big wigs are sitting at the SC waiting to govern but not create jobs. They believe in private enterprise. Should they not have been meetin to see how they can revive our manufacturing base they destroyed since 1966? Should they not be working to streamline land tenure so we can have commercial farms as Nkrumah did. Should they not be working with parliament to enact laws that will grow the private sector. That is how the unemployment will go down . Meanwhile let us WASTE the 4 years as we fight to come to power. But then get on the streets and protest about the time wasting. Our leaders need to SERVE us

First and foremost, I would appeal to the struggling graduates never to give up. As one well-known motto goes, "there is always a way".
In fact, one of the hallmarks of tertiary education is the ability to see problems as potential OPPORTUNITIES. Being unemployed should be a moment for intense brainstorming for solutions and new ideas. Many have become millionaires by turning problems to very lucrative businesses. The story is told of one former executive that got his billion-dollar idea while in the unemployment line.
Of course the proper mindset is essential. Someone summed it all up with this powerful motto: BELIEVE, BEGIN, BECOME.
EARLY PLANNING
The whole idea of career planning should begin very EARLY in life, even before the High School stage. Parents and relatives should be deeply involved in the process. They should thoroughly research this question: WHICH CAREER AREAS ARE IN GREATEST DEMAND IN TODAY'S GHANA? The answer should determine which courses to pursue, the level of effort needed by the student (for instance straight-A's all the way if dreaming about the medical school), and the resources needed.
THE EXPERT
Gone are the days when all that was required was a university degree: ANY degree for ANY job. High school students should dream about becoming EXPERTS in something, so that their brains and skills might be tapped in the form of employment. A youngster should think: "When I grow up I would like to be a world EXPERT in deforestation, so that the Ministry of Agriculture can seek my services". Or, "in future I would wish to be a global AUTHORITY in irrigation". Such should be the mindset very early on.
RETRAINING
Now back to the unemployed graduate. Retraining should be one way out. I the western world it is not uncommon to find even RETIREES retraining to reenter the workforce!
As the world changes and what was "hot" a decade ago now becomes almost useless, one needs to explore new horizons. After all, the primary purpose of tertiary education is to lay the FOUNDATION for further personal development. If the job-hunting research indicates that IT is the current "hottest" area, then by all means, get an IT certification somewhere.
INTERNSHIPS
Tertiary students about to graduate should consider internships (or "attachments") the standard way to get one's foot in the door of permanent employment. But begin planning early, at least two years before graduation. Enquire and explore. Communicate with officials of the target attachment institution. Make connections. Seek even menial jobs at that place during vacation. Also, be prepared to seek UNPAID internship. The experience to be gained counts far more than wages.
All in all, KEEP BRAINSTORMING but ACT when a good idea pops up!

Workers go to college whiles scholars go to school or university. If you want to work then you need to go to the college but if you want to write books then the university is the right place for you. Have you ever wondered why medical doctors after practicing for sometime go to the college of physicians and surgeons and military officers also go to the command and staff college? It is because colleges are meant for those who want to work and not for those who want to write books.

The view held by some key government functionaries that the state has no business creating jobs is irresponsible and its a definite source for potential unrest in the country. The state has a sacred duty to put people to work to wheel this country to achieve its goals. There are jobs in this country yet our politicians have no idea about job creation and have left able and skilled youth to rot away in the streets. This situation will explode in our faces one day.

I share the writer's sentiments. However, he just raises issues and points out problems, but does not offer any solutions.
This I think stems from one of the main defects of our education system which is, we are not taught how to problem solve. We know very much what our problems are. But how to go about solving these problems, has been the bane of our so-called educated men and women.
The writer talks about "...The refusal of government to harness the positives of the Ghanaian Graduate is a danger to the entire citizenry because of the pos(s)ibility nature has in taping the negative energies into foul activities...etc." This then goes to show the myopic scope of our graduates. Instead of applying their acumen and critical thinking skills to the plethora of problems facing us as a nation for their solution, they will rather concentrate their energies on internet fraud and other anti-social activities because the government did not find them jobs. Thus, our education system instead of preparing young men and women with robust and dynamic visions to stir up or change the status quo, ie galvanizing the old men and women with stale ideas in government, our graduates would rather lounge around waiting for the government to solve their problems for them.
When will our graduates realize that our governments are just the gate-keepers of the canker and rot that has been plaguing us a Nation? With this kind of education and mindset of our so-called graduates, is there any hope for us as a Nation? I wonder.
