That is why my catch-phrase has been for a while now "idiots and morons are ruling us!" That's why Ghana retrogressed to below colonial levels of standard of living, etc. after the whites left, and we are only picking up again! Yes, high standards the ancestors of some us supported the whites to raise Ghana to. Nkrumah, against the heavy odds, was doing a herculean task when he was overthrown.
I was recently reminded of a family joke. When Gbedemah took Nkrumah to Anloga thereabout 1950 to solicit support for their campaign for independence, Torgbui Sri II, very old then, listened attentively to them and made only one request: they should leave him one white man after they had sacked all the white people! He knew what he was saying: he got more support for his reforms and bid for modernisation from the white DCE and his personnel than from his own council of chiefs and elders steeped in outmoded customs and culture! (I have to agree that some of the reforms were very revolutionary and upsetting though but necessary).
I didn't bother to read the original news as I was rather pre-occupied then. Reading now the stupid grounds for calling for increased taxes on condoms clearly showed that it was all bollocks anyway.
Prosper is absolutely right in his position and Ms Anita De Souza (is that not the correct spelling of her name?) absolutely bonkers in hers! I sincerely hope it is not govt policy though but just hot air from an individual, ignorant person.
The subject is not my area of study but having supervised a nurse writing an MPhil dissertation on knowledge, sexual behaviour and prevention of unwanted pregnancies in Ghana, I came to have a pretty good insight on the subject of sexual behaviour. In was in the course of that exercise that it really dawn on me that knowledge of bad practices and associated risks does not automatically change the behaviour of such risk takers when it comes to sex, and cigarette smoking, for instance. Yes, Reason or Rationality does not apply for many, a fact psychologists but attest to rather than economists (taxation people)! The work of the community health workers in the field is therefore double hard. Adding this nonsense coming from Anita, even if with the blessing of the religion infused Mahama regime, is therefore something not to be tolerated by all sane and knowledgeable people. It must be hooted at! Prosper, thanks for taking the time and trouble to write a response to the bollocks.

On the subject matter, I agree with you that the view of Ms De Sosoo is either too myopic and indeed a miseducation and will hamper efforts being made to prevent HIV/AIDS infection/spread among the Ghanaian populace because if you begin to tax condom it be become unaffordable for those who could not hold body. Once they got that feeling like Marvin Gay said, they will want to gratify their urge condom or no condom and in this case where it is now expensive, - no condom. Just like you said in less then 3 years the society will be booming with astronomically high infection and death rate all related to HIV/AIDS issues.
Being a christian who believes and practice the fundamental aspect of God's command:"Thou shall not commit adultery" Yet being a microbiologist I do not foist my views and practice on others knowing that it is not everybody that will obey the above command therefore one accepts the fact that "if you no go fit hold body use condom - do it safely to protect yourself and patner" Knowing fully well it is not only through sexual intercourse one can contact HIV, we should promote vigorously good and practical education on safe sex among sexually active elements of our society and make condoms cheap and available without imposing tax on it. Lets take this allegory; The Ms in question,s views on high taxes on condoms were implemented and in 3 years time, someone very close to Ms takes ill and blood transfusion is needed. They search among donors and found that more than 95 percent of available ones are HIV positive, the dying relative is HIV negative who now may have to die because of scarce HIV negative donors. I believe that day she will realise that instead of having up 95 percent available HIV negative donors who abstained from sex because of high cost of condoms owing to taxation she now have at her hands the opposite. Well being rich in her position she may import HIV negative blood and take care of her relative but what of others in the populace who are not that rich?

There must be a significant increase in the use of condoms as protection against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. In recognition of this behavior in the effort to slow and reverse the current rate of HIV infection, the Condom Policy and Strategy is designed with the goal of enhancing access by all sexually active Ghanaians to high quality condoms at affordable prices through effective and responsive service delivery systems. We should not under any circumstance politesses the price of condom. HIV/AIDS in Ghana will soon become a national disaster and public health emergency if nothing is done about some of these political talks.
