No one is taxing a small company or institution if they don't make profit. As long as they make profit, they needed to be taxed.

No one is taxing a small company or institution if they don't make profit. As long as they make profit, they needed to be taxed.

In the rich country, the top 10% of the people pay more than 60% of all the taxes but in our world, the rich are the ones that don't pay taxes and yet, get everything free from the government. Private school should be taxed REASONABLY as long as they make profit.

Also, the reason why every church or pastor wants to open a University and not primary school or secondary school like the Catholics, Methodist, SDA and Presby did for us is because of the money involved. If we start taxing them, the good ones will continue to flourish while the bad ones will be rooted out.

We don't want to catch up with Nigerians on Mushroom Universities.

Because you fear mushroom universities you begin to impose tax. Look at the other direction where you avoid imposing taxes and rather ensure that the universities meet certain high standards. Which of the two options do you think will be better and COMMONSENSIBLE?

I have taken pains to read this write up and unfortunately i cannot see any reason why the universities should not be taxed in there. Lets post such write-ups from an informed position. The writer is simply ignorant about what taxation is about. Will appreciate a more researched article. If it is proven that the profits do not represent caSH whereaS in practice investments far exceed the profits generated by the universities then maybe you may have a point. But even in that case it may not be factual as the universities will have a high level of depreciation in the profit and loss account which is not driven by the movement of funds and indeed represents funds available to the university assuming loans may have been fully repaid or loan repayments fall below depreciation charges. Do note that loss making universities will pay no TAX.

I'm sure he's thinking in terms of the universities pocketing their profits without paying taxes because they're doing Ghana a favor by educating students. Really? Taxi owners shouldn't pay any taxes because they're helping Ghana.Farmers shouldn't pay any tax because they're helping Ghana.Zoom Lion shouldn't pay any tax because it's cleaning up Ghana.The list is long ,but I hope you get my point. As long as the universities are for profit they should pay taxes. WE shouldn't play politics with everything the government says or does. We need taxes to build roads, police stations, bridges ,hospitals and do other things for the health of the nation. And, that is not an NDC or NPP's aspiration.

What more explanations does any one need to beware that, taxing the PrivateUniversity is not any new tax introduced to worse off the status of the proprietors. It is a tax on the deckared PROFITS. Assuming they make losses ina given year or a profit below the threshold, their accounts will not attract tax! My taxes cannot be used to provide the needed environment fir them to do their businesses when they themselves do not pay taxes.
Taxation is not anything anyone wants at any time and resisting this move will not change anything and the earlier they learn to accept and work with it, the better it would do for all of us. Now Dr. Bokor, you are in the US through government sponsorship, right? Where did the government get that money for your trip? These are some of the questions you should be ashamed to be asking yourself!

The fact that such bogus and wicked and heartless Act have been passed doesn´t make the government senseless and foolish not to call it back for re-considerations.I wonder why we should continue to be electing people to be punishing us every now and then.If Mahama wants to be taken serious as a man who has come to salvage Ghana from all these chaos,then I urge him again to do the right thing.Haven´t we had enough of their incompetent and humiliations! Why are they treating us like this in our own country? Whoever brought up such wicked proposals for the private Universities to be taxed, should bow down their/his heads in shame.How unfortunate! One sad thing is that the government is incompetent to the extend that any foolish man could just get up and demand something to be done ,and without giving a careful thought to it they would jump to implement that.Where is the justifications for such a tax? By the way how are tax monies used in this country? They only set it aside and share amomg themselves as a booty. Where is the change that Ghanaians have been promised? Now, it has come to a point that if you are not a member of parliament, your children can not be educated sinve they have the power to decide what they take home at the end of the month and therefore can pay their children´s fees without any problem. I urge President Mahama to be very careful with those "flies" following him as his advisers! If he has Ghanaians in heart then he should step in and stop such nonsense before it´s too late. Moneytary profit itself is a reward private universities get from society in excessive fee payment so the social profit argument you are raising is offsetted by this very reward they get. Therefore, the universities are being rewarded for their contribution or work to society by the profits they get so government owes them nothing. The state reserves the right to tax that reward or profit. These passionate excuses or reasons given by Borkor against the taxation of profit being made by private universities are flimsy. Poor students are not suppose to pay fees to deliver moneytary profits to private universities if you you claim those universities are offering social profit to government.
