Frankly, I don't presume to know everything that goes on in Zongo communities, I can only say that it is indicative of our failure to achieve a proper national integration and unity.

Whereas Zongo communities predate independence, even possibly the Gold Coast, where each existed as loosely connected nation-states that were coterminous with our various tribal groupings, the persistence of the phenomenon underscores the fact that whereas we verbally profess to be citizens of one country, there is also the counter-culture of self-selection and exclusion. The same phenomenon is indicative of the presence of tribalism or lack of fully functional national integration. Else why will the Zongo communities be composed mainly of Moslems and indigenes of the three Northern regions of Ghana and beyond? Why are we not blending into the super tribe called Ghanaians? This is a failure of national leadership. Besides Nkrumah, none of our former presidents have been a successful unifier, to the extent of infusing us with nationalism and patriotism of the highest order. In fact, some have been very divisive and responsible for the seeping and deepening animosity and tribalism of today.

Look around you, one of such leaders is still around; your guess is as good as mine. Of such, the blood of the innocent is still on his hands.

As a true Zongolian( non Moslem though), you have really wet my appetite for the nostalgic moments, growing up in Salaga and Sabo'n Zongo- Kumasi, near Masarachi'n jim'mah. And just to throw a little light on the creation of the first Zongo in Ghana. The first ever Zongo in Ghana originated in Salaga, the ancestral hometown of my useless father who abandon me to rot but for the goodness of Allah,the most merciful and compassionate God, I still live to glorify His holy name. Salaga Township predates all the way back to the period of the Trans-Saharan trade when Hausa traders from northern Nigerian, Kano to be precise , settled down there for slave trading. Salaga eventually became the center of trading between the Arab North Africa and the sub-Saharan Ghana where the Ashantis used to disrespectfully and ruthlessly sold their cassava grating Trokosi squatting cocoa farm laborers to the Hausa merchants , who in turn, sold them to the Arabs who carry them away in captivity to the hot Saharan dessert. And just to throw a little light on the creation of the first Zongo in Ghana. The writer assertion that Zongo is bounded by Islam and not by ethnicity is a completely false and cannot be supported by facts. The moslems within the Zongo community are less than 40% and most of the ethnic groups are from Northern, Upper East and Upper West with a few from Burkina Faso. Zongo has nothing do with religion and the Hausas who are moslems are not Ghanaians. Zongo is a typical multi-cultural community with the various tribes having their own Chiefs reprensenting them. The Busanga's, Moshe, Hausa and the Leos are not not Ghanaians. If you travel across the length and breadth of the country. Most of the Zongo communities are settler farmers and are mostly from the northern part of Ghana and the majority have nothing to do with Islam

Dear brothers Alhassan and Shamu I think you are being unkind and harsh on Bro. Tanko Ali Yahaya for his definition of Zongo communities in Ghana. I think the piece he wrote is quite insightful about immigrant communities in cities and towns in Ghana. That Zongo as a community has a culture and character different from the dominant culture from their original base and of the cities and towns in which they exist. Whether only 40% of Zongo community are Muslims is irrelevant. Its the religion that seem to bind the community together even though the community has other linguistic ethnics with their traditions and culture. No one in Zongo is forced to be a Muslim. It is a secular community with religious tolerance.

I am in agreement with Brother Tanko that Zongo communities redefine the cultural dispositions from that of the original ethnic groupings. I can postulate that Zongo is Ghana of the future as intermarriages, education and , tolerance and acceptance of difference fuses all of us into Zongo. We will all be Zongorians soon. Ghana will be the eleventh region metaphorically. As a kid ( Juaben bloodline) growing up in Koforidua I experienced Zongo deeply due to friendships with kids from the Zongo Community. Today I can speak Hausa, Yuroba, Sissala and Dagbani and I count my blessings due to the lasting friendships with ethnics from those linguistic groups I met along the way. I live in the America now and as an immigrant I can identify with Bro. Tanko Ali's Zongorian.

WE SHOULD ALL LEARN FORM THE SPIRIT OF TOGERTHERNESS AND NEIGBOURLINESS THAT EXIST IN ZONGO COMMUNITIES. THAT IS THE TRUE "OMAN". COMMUNITY OR COUNTRY (GHNANA) A COLLECTION OF MANY LINGUSTIC ETHNICITIES.

The only advice that I can give him, is to seek the definition of the word zongo and then understand the people living that community and also have good knowledge of what living in zongo is about. What I read and what I know about zongo is completely opposite. Even though, I may not blame him for saying what he said. Because, in Ghana`s society of today, anybody who feel like expressing himself will or can come out with any stupid topic to write about. There is no wonder that, people always write anything at all just to discredit president, society or party, be it true or false. I will advice guy to go back and learn what zongo is about and write about it again. Frankly speaking, my mind will never ever buy this fucking idea of his. I will not be surprised if it is an NPP follower who might have write this crap of idea. If zongo will be come a region in Ghana, then will have ten more regions in addition to what we have already.

In this day an age where elections are so fraudulent with the EC machinations, it is easy to pad the electoral register with such people from the surrounding countries who move in and reside in the Zongos.

Like the Togolese taking advantage of Ghana's "free education" because of their being akin to the Ewes, so also such people from the north of Ghana who reside in the Zongos.

The Zongorians are also known to be trouble causers - the Alla Alla people! Poor Ghana, dealing with the Zongorians is a herculean problem. The NDC has made this issue political and it would be tough to deal with it. As Yahaya puts it, some Zongorians are definitely not Ghanaians but who would disapprove this?

The squalor in such communities, every zongo you visit, the biggest being Nima in Accra is also a huge headache for Ghana and I wonder whether it could be solved before "thy Kingdom come". I had spent four years at Legon in the early seventies but never visited Nima until 2008. I just could not believe Nima was part of Accra or Ghana. Too filthy! And who are those who live there?

Finally, there is a Zongo community in every town in Ghana. The Zongos cannot be considered the eleventh region since the Zongos are not contiguous.

i think the real problem is the failure of successive govt in dealing with immigration ,there is no proper documentaction on people who come into the country plus no record on those in Ghana before independence who by law are Ghanaians but what is compounding the situation is the influx of more economic migrants who find safe havens in such communities.a typical example is the madina ashamed botwe areas where in less than 2yrs they become proficient in two or more language and have the audacity to venture out and vote.
if the institution in this department of discussion were working this would never happen and records would have indicted first generation,second generation or whatever ghanaian like in the west.

But from where am coming from in the same region precisely obuasi have the dominant of wangara and for that reason dwira is spoken in at least 80% of household.
