I have not seen anyone in need of the attention of a surgeon or a medical specialist insisting that only the ones from his tribal enclave must be the best. Similarly, I have not seen any air passenger who chooses flights based on the ethnic origin of the pilot."

Meritocracy and focus should be on processes, procedures to help people to build capacities and rise through the ranks to the top. As an example, if a candidate can be elected and is able to manage a district, municipal, metropolitan, or region, then chances are, maybe they can elected to manage the whole country; what do you think? After all, charity begins at home/NPP.

Expedite decentralization with elections of all office holders including the regional ministers is the plausible practical way to go.

NPP should raise the bar and require for anybody applying to contest a constituency representation should have the minimum of second degree and beyond would sanitize the party's reputation, broad based excellent appeal, and establish more cogent candidates.

There is one typical example in the immigration service when one Krobo man, name forgotten now, who was the head of Ghana immigration was sacked and replaced with an Akan, a twi, by kuffuor without reason.

Alos on the Economy and security of Ghana, it was just a joke. Kuffuor's HIPC was nothing good to talk about, he was only lucky the security situation in Nigeria compelled most of their financial institutions to move into Ghana to boost employment and growth, his HIPC was just a shame.

Perhaps, it doesn't occur to you that the NDC is already de-Ewenised. It gets a lot of Ewe support, for very good reasons, having been insulted, vilified, demonised and threatened with all kinds of threats by the NPP people and left with no other choice, but Ewes do not play dominant roles in its leadership.

In the early years of the PNDC, JJ was the only person in the PNDC cabinet! Kojo Tsikata was attending such meetings as the security honcho but even that was objected to by some, allegedly the Ahwois, since he was not a Secretary. Things became so bad that Kojo did not join the NDC and was eventually hounded out of the country to live in S. Africa with the wife. So that was the fate of even the supposedly most powerful Ewe PNDC member. Mills brought him back and rehabilitated him.

In fact, during the NPP years in power, when all those Akan and other hangers-on under JJ disappeared from the scene, The NDC Secretariat was actively manned by a new generation of angry Ewes - the Kwaku Anyidohos, Fiifii Kweteys, Okudzetos, etc. They were few but very vocal and propelled Mills to power and he rewarded them for their loyalty by giving them some bit parts/roles to play.

As for the fate of the chief "Ewe" and Founder himself, JJ, we all know about his fate under Mills. Don't we? So the mass of Ghanaians don't see only Ewe hands and faces directing the NDC. With these Mahama with so many Northerners appointed to high positions, who can say that? Only the NPP supporters do!

Anyway, in conclusion, does the author really believe that ethnicity is the only or main variable that determines how Ghanaians vote? I as an ardent Nkrumaist won't vote for the NPP nor the NDC. Perhaps, teh perceived corruption of the NPP is more to blame for their loss of power in 2008 than ethnicity. And NDC's loss in 2000 due more to the Swedru Declaration compounded by the attempt to impose candidates on the constituencies by Dr Asamoah.

That comment may sound too strong and blunt to others but honestly, I think it is rather brutishly frank and corrective. For me though, I have moved on from the shock and existence of this naked Akan sectionalism and hubris; to the point of knowing that Ghanaians now need to move on; to identify their priorities and confront their leaders very aggressively on the menace of corruption other than wasting their time on this village creed; more so on this unsettling unification with their uncritical Akyem confederates. If Ghanaians need place value on their time and exploits, they will now have to
1. Confront corruption head on no matter which government is in power. Corruption is too engraved in our culture to the extent that even young innocent girls looking for opportunities to work decently have to be sexually exploited many times over before getting a job. What an amoral society. And this practice is shockingly endemic. How many times do women get exploited daily in this way in Ghana; and how many men get employed anyway? Corruption is so rife and this vice cuts across all parties in Ghana. Therefore, corruption is the leading political question which I believe governments must be measured with. NPP is not important per se because there is CPP and others. Let all Akans vote for NPP and they can still be irrelevant so long as there is a winning party. The question however is who will this winning party be and how will that party be measured by Ghanaians? Ghanaians do not just need a party, we need a non-corruptible party.
2. Following from the above, we need real multi-party politics supported by effective pluralism rather than this dodgy and over-valued dependence on NPP/NDC. You expect energetic unions from students, workers, trade, social and pressure groups which in a sense will force all parties to clean their acts. The Ghanaian political scene is somewhat imbalanced. The NDC is strategically balanced though there is a huge space for easy exploitation by other parties. Also, the NPP probably has no chance ever to win for; they may almost always come close but never win because of this sectionalism. So, the trump card is probably in the hands of those tiny parties and a sea change against corruption can be forced down the throat of all parties if pluralism is taken to its logical end.

A national party cannot keep electing candidates from two ethnic enclaves- eastern and ashanti and expect to do we;. The optic the presented by the party was also taken up by the author.
This is a serious article and failure to heed is call spells doom for the NPP.

I had spent a lot of precious time on trying to demystify them on this Akan majorifo humdrum! I feel I have even wasted my time writing this.

BTW, it appears the Akans are breeding faster than the rest of us. They used to be only 44% of the pop. A good reason Mahama should drop that tax on condoms.:-) And free condoms to all Akan young men to curb the trend of unrestrained pop. growth!

If any NDC member had made the type of comments Ken Agyapong made against Ewes and Gas, President Mills would have repudiated those comments publicly. With Akufo Addo, all we got was silence, if not tacit support for Agyapong. Again when Ursula Owusu told a fellow (NDC) MP that he would be a cattler herder were it not for free education, the top echelon applauded her when should have drawn sharp rebuke.

NDC hardly has the kind of ethnically-prejudicial abusive comments that NPP operators dish out with gleeful abandon.

Nana Addo himself didn't help himself with his 'yen akanfuo' comments behind closed doors. Anytime a presidential candidate makes divisive comments behind closed doors in an attempt to appeal to a bloc of voters, he better pray that those comments are not revealed to the public. It's difficult for him to recover. Mitt Romney found out the hard way with his 47% comments. about poor people, when he was pandering to rich republicans in a closed door meeting.

NPP has built a brand on ethnic exclusionism tat dates back to the days of Victor Owusu and exacerbated by the flagbearership of Prof Adu Boahen who alienated Ewes definitively by appealing to Akan sentiments as a campaign weapon against JJ Rawlings.

It's very difficult for NPP to launch an effective campaign in the Volta Region when Adu Boahen's campaign a mere 20 years ago labelled them as foreigners who should return to Togo.

Is it too late for NPP to broaden its regional and ethnic outlook? I do not know, but it'll only get increasing difficult for them if they continuing with how they operate currently.

Political Parties are "Brands" and perceptions as we say in marketing is real. A major problem with NPP as a political organization is it lacks strategic discipline. Its internal cohesion at the leadership level is like that of a Country Club of self comfortable "Esquires" ( personalities) whose claim to leadership is because they have been around for a long time as party faithfuls. A leadership made of Lawyers, intellectuals who believe any non University educated person have nothing to offer in terms of leadership. They appear to be dismissive of their own passionate "Young Turks". Where is Dan Botwe and other young Turks? The NDC is more well organized, cohesive efficient and politically strategic like the former CPP in exploiting political weakness of adversaries. Why did they pick Asiedu Nketiah as Gen. Sce.? Just because You are well educated and believe in the Rule of Law does not mean you can win elections. Compare the Palm wine tapper with Sir John in performance ( not foul mouth) and you can understand what I am implying.
Sadly the UP/NPP legacy used to have S.D Dombo ( Northern Ghana) and some EWE ( Apaloo) amongst them besides the Akim, Ga and Ashanti.

The way forward will not be easy as perceptions take quite sometime to correct but it can be done with young leadership from a cross-section of society. That is NPP has to re-engineer itself if it comes to recognize and admits its perceptional dilemma as an Akan party with xenophobic tendencies.

Sadly the UP/NPP legacy used to have S.D Dombo ( Northern Ghana) and some EWE ( Apaloo) amongst them besides the Akim, Ga and Ashanti.

For one reason or the other, I HATE (repeat) - HATE THE NPP BECAUSE IT IS MY BELIEF (wrongly or rightly) that the NPP is an ASHANTI/AKYEM PARTY. I do not even know what both parties stand for BUT the impression I get is that the NPP is a TRIBAL RATHER THAN AN ALL INCLUSIVE NATIONAL PARTY.
HOW THE PARTY IS GOING TO OVERCOME THIS IS A MASSIVE ISSUE - AND IF THE NDC HAVE ANY SENSE, THEY CAN EXPLOIT THIS SITUATION TO THEIR ADVANTAGE.
Take Accra as an example - HOW IS IT THAT AREAS OF HIGH ASHANTI/AKYEM CONCENTRATION ALWAYS RETURN AN ASHANTI OR AKYEM INDIVIDUAL. DOES IT MEAN THAT ALL OF THEM HAPPEN TO BE NPP OR ARE THEY VOTING ON TRIBALISTIC GROUNDS.
This has put the FEAR of GOD in some of the other TRIBES. By the way - IS THERE A SINGLE GA OR EWE MP FROM THE ASHANTI REGION? WHAT IS THEREFORE HAPPENING NOW IS - THE NORTHERN REGION, VOLTA AND GREATER ACCRA HAVE FORMED AN ALLIANCE TO FRUSTRATE THE ASHANTI/AKYEM ALLIANCE - and do you blame them???

If Woyome were Ashanti, the chief of his village would do the same thing. The Asantehene would not do that but his village chief would do it because he has helped the village with his stolen riches. The Ewes are divided into many groups each with its paramount chief and speaking a slightly different Ewe. The title of the article is very misleading in the first place. By de-Akanisation, I understand it to be purging the NPP of Akans. I really do not know how this can be possible for any political party in Ghana.

If I then consider what you really meant, you meant that there is a lot of Akan influence in the party. That much cannot be avoidable seing that Akans are the dominant grouping in Ghana. If you are recommending that the party embarks on some positive discrimination in favour of other minority groupings, that might be an advice for the party to consider.

I do not however believe that being identified as Akan-influenced party is costing the NPP votes. For this to hold, we have to conclude that Ghanaians vote along tribal lines. If that were to hold, the NPP should be winning all elections for Akans form the majority. That being Akan-influenced is costing NPP votes is a myth.

The regions that vote along tribal lines are Ashanti and Volta and to some extent, the three northern regions. These aside, there is always a fight for the votes in the other regions.

Studying the distribution of votes, the NPP rather wins the largely literate and urban votes whiles the NDC wins the rural and largely illiterate votes.

The problem for the NPP is how to identify with the less fortunate amongst us and the rural voter. I will recommend a strategy towards this end rather this myth of de-Akanisation.

Membership to any Ghanaian party cannot be doggedly encouraged or engineered based on some kind of sectionalist principles even though under certain extreme strategic circumstances, these may be necessary. Social engineering or positive discrimination cannot promote the needed trust within the NPP group or enhance any genuine political affiliation and planning it might engage in. this is because the NPP is not just tainted by discrimination; it is actually an uncouth, backward and a hubristic battalion. By the way, should membership to the NPP be socially engineered?

Membership to the NPP by positive discrimination will implicitly inflict gross insult specifically to the politicians concerned on the one hand and generally to Ghanaians on the other if such candidates are presented to run for public office. For instance, Ghanaians know that JJR’s hard work was heavily dented by Atta Mill’s mediocre government and this example underlines the pitfalls in positive discrimination or social engineering. This is why it is best to accept natural selection to prevent making any person or group its black sheep. Also, the party can neither fool the public with a single ethnic minority face such as Bawumia nor engage in outmoded racist propaganda in its bid to win chap votes. Rather, it should bow and respect common knowledge and demonstrate common sense by nominating ashantis, akyems, ewes, gas, hausas, dagombas, frafras, krobos, fantes, akwapims, adas, and all as a natural reflection of the Ghanaian society.

The NPP as a party may not be able to do this which means it has a long way to go as the mentality of its frontline politicians is currently negative, old fashioned and technically defunct. And, giving the possibility of a more rigorous election in future, there is little or no chance of this particular party ever winning elections in Ghana unless it can demonstrate far more than the NDC that it has a revamped equal opportunities policy. Otherwise, it will gradually but surely succumb to serving as only a strong pressure group; albeit a confused and subversive one; which will though be regionally strong, will remain a subversive all-die- be- die misfits. This may not mean a field day for the NDC. As a ruling government, the NDC must wipe out corruption. That feel god factor in Ghana a few years ago will soon bow to the evils of capitalism soon if it has not started biting already. So there will be no field day for the NDC. Rather, the ugly face of capitalism which was allowed to fester thanks to the Kufour/Mills government will show big time to hunt Mahama. The only tool has been to fight it from all angles and I am not sure this is being dealt with as proactively as it should.

The NPP would have been relegated to nothingness by now had the NDC worked effectively with the founder of the party hence there is no doubt that the NDC has lost ground. It is only in power because there is no credible opposition; and it could easily be overtaken by an overhauled and radical group especially if CPP could focus on corruption as a fighting ‘weapon’. For a fact, the sectionalist/tribalistic NPP were dying after Kufour and now it appears to have been killed finally by this all-die-be-die/kume preko brigade. On the other hand, the NDC appears to be notoriously incapable of killing this corrupt legacy left by that gold-chain thief in spite of the fact that it has been in office for more than two terms now.

If the CPP wants to take its chance, it should regroup now. It may look small, but it can co-opt other parties plus take additional pluralist stance linking up with student movements, trade unions, pressure groups and churches. If they are genuine in both orientation and operation, which should be the minimum requirement for all parties in Ghana; they will be propelled to live above this NPP/NDC nonsense.

They have their work cut out though: They have a lot to do to dissuade Ghanaians of the notion that they have changed and truly wish to be a party for all. It will take them a lot of hard work and proof in several ways to demonstrate that they are serious about removing tribe from their discourse, their business and the business of the country.

I certainly hope to see the NPP make such a transition, and also focus on policies that favour the many, not the few.

A long way to go, but the journey of a thousand years, starts with the first step and I sincerely hope some wise ones in the party would take heed. Brilliant article.

For your information, I haven't come across any Asante including me who thinks he is better or superior than any other tribe in Ghana, for family relations cut across all tribes in many instances. I have in my family one niece who is half Ewe, I have two nephews one of whom is half Ga and the other is half Dagomba. It is some of you dimwits with inferiority complex who attribute all your problems to Asantes and hate them as such. Talking about education, Asantes today are as much educated as any other group in Ghana unlike the 19th Century and the earlier parts of the 20th Century.

As a matter of fact those workers quit when my father passed away because they couldn't see themselves working for anybody else.

This is bigotry that was unfortunately peddled by JJ Rawlings and his cronies for over 20 years to divide the country and also to push one tribe against another tribe to sustain PNDC/NDC political power and entrenched corruption and looting in Ghana. Akans and Ashantis are tolerant people like any tolerant and decent Ghanaian.
