Mr. Pryce, Ms. Hammah did in the end speak ex tempore without a speech. I have not watched/heard the speech. However it was her actions prior to that which is problematic and disgraceful. You are minister giving a speech in front of an audience. You edited a speech and did not take it along with you (like someone commented "how heavy is it that you cannot carry it?"). Then you start reading the unedited speech. You all of a sudden stop reading, look around like a fool,(which I think she is)and from the video clip, I hear her saying Sssssss on the microphone (like a man trying to call a prostitute), trying to get the attention of an aide. Instead of placing the mic away, she keeps on talking into it. This is a deputy minister for communications. No wonder the Ablekuma constituency did not vote for her. They did the right thing. She would have disgraced them. She is a big disgrace to this country.

After writing all those words straight from the dictionary you will at long last depict NONSENSE because all that will not convey any sense to the readers.

I posted this comment yesterday and still stand by it that we should stop encouraging mediocrity, recklessness and the blame game that is retarding our development.
Leaders must be held accountable for the performance of people who work under them, otherwise we are providing them the leeway to blame their failures on the subordinates. Could the person the minister accused of giving her the wrong script have defended him/herself in public in the like manner the minister did,if it was her fault that the corrections were not made?, no!!
If the minister wanted to conduct herself responsibly and maturely she should have while on the way to the function flipped through the script to ensure all the necessary corrections were effected.
In any case the minister is responsible for or at least made an input in the appointment of her aide. If she felt the aide is out to disgrace her, because this is not the first time, then the said person must be fired
It was disgusting for the minister to carry herself out this way.
Why should a small country like Ghana have so many ministries and ministers, some of which are duplicates and triplicates, but earning huge salaries?. Because people are more interested in taking title with entitlements than accepting responsibility and work hard.
I reservedly endorsed the call by the MP for her sack.

It is wrong for anyone to call for her dismissal, but it is equally wrong for anyone to support this classless and unethical behavior due of a National deputy minister. I am surprised that Dan has created his own straw man or Aunt Sally and trying hard to clutch onto it like a drowning man.
Firstly, no one is complaining about her right and ability to edit the speech before her presentation. Far from it, many agree that she was right to edit the speech to her likeness. I don't think any sane person will disagree with her.
Secondly, I am yet to read from anyone who is complaining about Hammah's choice or action NOT to use the wrong speech. Of course, it did not make sense and that was why she edited that, so why should she continue to use it? That is not the problem here.
Thirdly, I believe that many of her accusers would have joined the audience to applaud her when she decided to continue her speech by not using anything but from "her mind." I personally found it disheartening to see our learned lawyers in the SC reading from papers in their oral addresses. I have asked myself what was the point then to ask them to submit a written address also. So like many readers, it was a refreshing to see her not reading from any paper.
And lastly, no one is complaining about her "flawless" English. I have combed the net to listen to the full tape but could not find it. May be Dan could do us a favor by providing the link for us to talk about that.
What many are complaining is the way she went about this whole "mistake" or sabotage as she wants us to believe. It was classless and unethical becoming of a deputy Minister of a Nation. Let us be clear on this; she is not on TRAINING GROUND for a job, but rather a LEADER that people are looking up to and expecting results of her action.
Based on the reason above, she is more than a professional and every profession has ethical standards that the body must adhere to. This is what many of you get it wrong. Out of over possible 5 million available leaders, 100 Ministers have been chosen by Mahama to assist him to lead the 24 million people. We can't just say that we are from a 3rd world country or developing Nation, so we have to accept anything. That is wrong; it breeds mediocrity.
If she is considered as professional, how could you say that she was right to reprimand her assistant publicly? Do you think a medical doctor can or should reprimand his nurse in front of his patients? Do you think it will be right for our President to reprimand her publicly? If your answer is yea, then you are not a professional, yet. If your answer is nay, then what is your point of supporting and encouraging this tactless behavior?
Danny, you cited Obama in your straw man, but do believe this lady would be spared by the US Media for this kind of behavior? And do you think what would have happened to the Assistant who supposedly try to "sabotage her? Answer that truthfully and see why it is wrong for anyone of you to encourage this classless act.
Fact is, she did not know whether or not it was mistake by her assistant or by herself? However, she has created an impression that there are crooks in her ministry. Remember, the policy could have been written without a nod from the President. So how does he want us to believe the President and Party surrounded with crooks? Or, you think team-work is not important here but it should be about her integrity only?
Have you seen Ministers, leaders or any presenter covering the MIC or step away from the mic when talking to their assistant while at any podium giving a speech? What did she actually achieved by letting everyone know about her predicament? Would that make a change or would she go on and fire the suspect in this "crime?"
In your conclusion, you are giving her "tips" to go about her duty next time. If you knew that she made a "mistake," why can't you say so? Yes, I do agree with you that, in this age, ministers should leave home without a copy of their edited speech together with laptop and USB flash drive. Mahama's laptop for them were not to stay on Facebook, twitter and Instagram posting silly stuff.
On personal note- I hope things are getting better at your end.

VIC SIMPLY SAID WHAT SHE NOTICED WAS WRONG ABOUT THE SCRIPT SHE STARTED READING OUT, AND SHE DID THE RIGHT THING BY CONTINUING THE SPEECH WITHOUT READING OUT FROM THE SCRIPT.
BEFORE THEN, SHE RIGHTLY HAD TO MAKE THAT KNOWN TO THE AUDIENCE, BY HONESTLY "CONNECTING" WITH THEM.
THIS IS CALLED GOOD INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP, A VITAL INGREDIENT IN GOOD AND ADAPTIVE LEADERSHIP ATTRIBUTES. AN INGREDIENT VERY LACKING IN MANY OF GHANA'S USELESS LEADERS.
THIS IS WHY OBAMA OFTEN DELIVERS SPEECHES UNSCRIPTED, WHICH IS A SHOW OF GOOD RETENTIVE MEMORY AND EXEMPLARY COGNITIVE ABILITY.
HOW MANY OF OUR USELESS GHANAIAN "LEADERS" CAN DELIVER SPEECHES LIKE VICTORIA DID?
MANY OF GHANA'S LEADERS CAN'T EVEN CORRECTLY PRONOUNCE SIMPLE ENGLISH WORDS, LIKE TEKPER PRONOUNCING ROBUST LIKE ROBOT. THE CORRECT PRONUNCIATION IS RO-BUST, NOT LIKE IN ROBOT.
COME ON!! STOP CRITICISING JUST FOR THAT SAKE, BECAUSE YOU'RE AS HUMAN AS VICTORIA HAMMAH IS, AND THEREFORE NOT PERFECT.

Danny Boy, this is a brilliant piece. The call to sack Victoria Hammah is utterly ridiculous! Perhaps, if this had happened to most people calling for her to be sacked by President Mahama, those people could have ended up in a hole. I think given the awkward circumstances over her 'edited speech', Victoria should be applauded for eloquent and perfectly decent oration.
However, we should not overlook the fact that Victoria displayed pure amateurism as a Government Minister. Firstly, if she had taken a cursory glance at the prepared speech prior to the delivery, this embarrassing moment could have been avoided. This, she has to take personal responsibility. Secondly, Victoria demonstrated poor judgement by her audible attempts at scapegoating and impression of 'sabotage'. Suppose we assume for a moment that, an aide or someone sought to humiliate her by taking the 'edited speech' away from her, she could have paused for a moment and have a quite word with an aide/the speechwriter without making the whole thing so obvious to the audience.

Both the minister and those calling for her head are wrong. From the little gathered from the write up and the comments, the minister should have been more discrete in her public actions. She should have pulled heaven and earth not to show any signs of disaffection (something wrong with the script) in public and dealt with the situation in the ministry without anybody being the wiser.
As for the opposition, they are just playing politics with the whole thing. It does look like a cheap political shot.
It is good to upbraid the minister but not call for her head. There is one thing in Ghana: we fawn too much over those in authority and kowtow to them. Go to any of the ministries and see how even respectable chiefs from the provinces wait in the scorching sun and struggle to bring an issue to a deputy minister's attention. Some of them even come with gifts held in hiding by some of the elders (in cloth). With so many people seeking her, how can't the minister become pompous? I pity the officer who made that mistake. It may have been a genuine one but the deputy minister is going to bear down on him/her like a tyrant.
I also agree with the commentator who says we have too many ministers and deputy ministers. Far too many.
But, Daniel, what is the meaning of "orgulous"? I am feeling too lazy to reach for my Websters online and I know many readers will also feel that way. Why not follow the lady minister in her "plain, understandable, flawless English" which you admired in the write up?

Ah! I read yours much earlier in the day already. I thought of responding to you but thought I had addressed my concern in my own post already.
You see that I disagreed with your suggestion that she should have hidden the fact that something was wrong, thus preserving the status quo of deceit, feigning and lies that form the confidence mechanisms maintaining the culture of mediocrity, incompetence, criminal rot, negligence and corruption leading to, e.g., the gargantuan judgement debts, public theft, etc. and poor performance in the civil service. I prefer the cutting of the Gordian knot method to deal with it, The Revolution having failed!
Of course, the opposition is only playing politics with this open and transparent governance tactics of Ms Hammah.

Andy-K,
While I agree with you that we must be open about certain things as a lead in exposing corruption and mediocrity in our public life, I don't think this particular issue is one of such. From my reading of it all, it's more like a famous actor/actress forgetting his/her lines in an important public performance. Such an experienced actor will not panic on stage. It is the minister's "public performance" which is at issue not what she does to correct something that is wrong in her ministry. Her gut reaction may be wrong. For all this, an internal inquiry may reveal that a genuine mistake was made rather than a display of mediocrity.
Webster online gives the meaning of "orgulous" without indicating it is an archaic usage. Daniel's penchant for "big" words (vocab abi na grammar) is well known. I think he has been trying hard to get off that habit but human nature being what it is, it is easy for us to slip "back to our bad ways"...

I must first take you to task for your own use of the English language, laced with even an archaic word, "orgulous". Yes, words and high-falutin or bombastic phraseology European intellectuals such as Jean Paul Sartre and Bayart mock Africans for using, as they "stick to the teeth" and are "otiose," i.e., serving no useful purpose.
I did some research before writing this. Orgulous is neither found in my Collins Dictionary and Thesaurus In Vol. One nor my Collins Scrabble Dictionary! A web search shows that it is an archaic word meaning excessively proud, haughty, arrogant. One therefore needs a Webster Dictionary (my Ex took "our" copy away:-))to find out what that word means. How many Webster Dictionaries can one find in all our universities back home???
Strabismal is derived from "strabismus" and simply means "squinting" of the eye. How do you know that those with squint eyes have some distorted vision?
I read on another thread somebody grouping you with Ahoofe in the use of the English language and I thought that was not quite fair but you have been caught pants down! You are equally guilty of your own excoriation, i.e., upbraiding, of educated Ghanaians when it comes to the use of the English language. The diction and flow simply aren't there and the problem has been there for a long, long time unlike say in Nigeria. An Indian comic made fun of that on a You-tude video. You can count "you know" or "I mean" a 100 times before some of them complete their presentations, when they are not reading!
Now, to my support of you. I've defended the lady on other threads already so let me recap.
What others are condemning her for is not lying and covering up the rot, the mediocrity and the incompetence that bedevil the civil service, hidden and protected behind the smokescreen that shields civil servants from public blame for policy failures - failure to deliver adequately and failure to implement. The buck is said to rest with the political heads, the leaders! That these principles evolved by the colonialists have been thrust upon us without the necessary political and social acculturation before indep. have been the bane of the country since. Those condemning her should also do a study of how the Europeans evolved those principles over the decades, with prompt punishment meted out to erring civil servants. Ms Hammah's unorthodox expression of her frustrations at these mediocrity and incompetence she has discovered in her work place is therefore very apt in focusing attention on the incompetent seat warmers there and should put them on their toes to perform in order to avoid such public denunciation next time. She must follow that with a reprimand and official warning to the erring official. They completely betrayed the trust she reposed in them and that must not be tolerated. They deserved the public humiliation.
We must be thankful to her for giving us a glimpse of the rot and mediocrity that are out there in the system. You are only as good as your team. She did her best to edit the speech, handed it over to the person in charge for the necessary changes to be made and a new hard copy printed for her from the PC. They failed to do that! She could have pretended that everything was ok and give a different reason, i.e., lie, for departing from her script and then go on to deliver the speech extempore. No, not being a liar and rather someone who speaks from the heart, she said it as it was! We don't have to wait for her autobiography to read that and her other complaints! Yes, complaints that must be aired now so that public pressure and support are garnered to address them. A former Police chief just made some complaints about the conditions under which the Police are housed and why they took bribes. He certainly did nothing to redress those situations when he was in active service. Mr Hammah is doing so right now!
Ms Hammah brings a new and refreshing approach to address the corrosive rot, mediocrity and incompetence in the public and civil sphere in Ghana. She deserves all our support instead of condemnation for not following the rule of silence, the "omerta" of the hardened and experienced criminals, the mafioso and callous so-called elite who won't even blink an eye when the nation's throat is being cut by thieving bureaucrats who quickly show the new leaders how to bleed the nation Ghana! They just get their cuts, just as Mubarat did at the Min. of Sports and got sacked!
Yes, while many tried to untie the Gordian knot the orthodox way and failed, Alexander the Great drew his sword and cut it to the chagrin of many present but lo and behold, there was no knot to untie again. He went on to conquer the known world as predicted for the one who untied the Gordian knot. Go! Hammah Go!

It is always updated so it gives the latest in the language compared with any print version you may have. The app version is extremely good. It's free but there is a paid version which is even better than the free version.
Then there are some other dictionaries or usage guides like Bryan Garner's Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style (only print version available) or even The Economist's Style Guide for writers who send articles to that magazine. A very great resource - that. Bryan Garner has other dictionaries for specialist areas especially in legal usage. It shocks me how such a relatively young man writes such brilliant guides. All these are good for the "lay" writer i.e. as opposed to academic writing for which you may turn to other manuals. But nobody needs to write for ghanaweb like an article for an academic journal. It is enough here for the articles to be "mere" journalism. So that there will be no need here to refer to any Gordian knot or Alexander the Great's exploits with the sword...
On the issue at stake pls, read my own entry above.

Andy-K stop beating about the bush and hit the nail on the head by telling it as it is, that Daniel K. Pryce is simply an empty pompous braggart educated illiterate who is only found of imposing and raising himself with big words he use to cote from the dictionary which he himself do not really understand.
It is however not so wonderful because most EWES are like that. They like to blow their own horns only for attention sake.
Anyone who use to read the bogus pieces from Pryce like me will bear with me that he is a NONENTITY who is always seeking attention and nothing else.
The most stupid part of that Ewe guy, Pryce is that he is tribal, partisan
and a hypocrite.
I will personally describe Pryce as a perfect educated irritate IDIOT!!!

I see that you have been seeking a lot of attention yourself. Let me oblige you.
First, why not use an Akan moniker instead of an Ewe one? I use my own names and always say that I'd gladly repeat whatever I write here at Kejetia Lorry Park without fear and defend what I say. Only yellow belly slimy cowards and ingrates hide behind monikers to insult others and say things they cannot defend.
So Dan is blowing his own horns, so what? When it grits on my teeth, I said so and I am an Ewe! Why then should subject all Ewes to abuse cos of Dan's writing style. How many Ewes write like that on Ghanaweb? Nobody insults Akyems cos of Ahoofe's writing style.
It is a shame that some of you Akans always intrude your tribal prejudices into every topic and then turn round to accuse others who told you off of being tribalistic! Shame on you, if you have any shame at all! Address issues.
Everybody knows that Ewes are not loud and don't seek attention like some of you Akans, esp. from the interior, do even in these parts overseas.

Are you by any strecth of imagination comparing Pryce to Ahoofe. I hardly share the views expressed by Ahoofe but there is no denying the fact that he has absolute control over the queen's language. This is obvious from unending articles he writes on this website, sometime 2 or 3 at ago. Ahoofe may be predisposed to verbosity, however, one can quickly discern that those words falls in naturally as compared to Pryce.

I think that Dan is a very fine writer, and his use of what people term "big words" should be construed against the purpose of his writings: they are intended to educate. Education is the most important function of all writing.
Thus, instead of being critical of him for using advanced vocalic items, people should get busy trying to find the meanings of the unfamiliar words he uses in order to improve themselves.
After all, all scholarship subsists in the knowledge of words and the words we meet today which we call "big", we are bound to meet them elsewhere and be called upon to explain them.
And in any case, whose "big" is "big"? The slimly-read Ghanaian reader or Jean Paul Sartre who uses words like “otiose” instead of “serving no purpose”?
As regards the substantive issue, I think Ghanaians should learn to laugh off trivia instead of making issues out of nothing. I watched the video of the lady’s faux pas myself and thought it rather funny. I would commend and not condemn her for the way she handled the situation. We must learn to enjoy ourselves when humor happens instead of being grouchy and mean-spirited.

If the purpose of Dan's writing is to educate, then he must endeavor to keep his writing as simple and clear as possible. A good writer keeps his target audience in mind as he weaves his thoughts and selectss his words. The question of 'big word' may be a relative one as you pointed out, but trust me if an average student has to constantly refer back to a dictionary in order to make sense of a piece, then there is something wrong with that piece. I have noticed that the higher a person climbs on the academic, the simpler and clearer his languages becomes. My PhD supervisor used to advise that I write as I speak, and I think Dan should be told the same. It will help him in his PhD write up. Please convey it to him.

Again, the voice at the back of the courtroom yelled out, "You damned bitch!"
The judge stopped, looked at the man in the back of the courtroom, and said, "Sir, I can understand your anger and frustration at this crime, but I will not have any more of these outbursts from you, or I shall charge you with contempt! Now is that a problem?"
The man at the back of the court stood up and responded, "For fifteen years, I have lived next door to that bitch, and every time I asked to borrow a hammer, she said she never had one!"
