Prof Lungu, I disagree with your assertions on culpability of the EC in the 2012 elections. The excuses you have expressed for the EC fall short of the valid nature of the procedure for determining a winner. Your attitude reminds one of the dangerous Ghana mentality of "fama Nyame". In order words, yes mistakes were made, but let us forgive the EC because they are the best in Africa. Prof Lungu, I was expecting greater depth of analysis from you. Just rushing to respond to Professor Kwaku Asare's statements does not justify your rather lackadaisical and low attempt to avoid "..causing you to scratch your head..."

No, I do not believe in "Fama Nyame." But, from direct experience, I know what improvements in administration and professionalism can do for any public organization. We believe that given sufficient resources, good/non-partisan leadership, and constructive critiques, the EC can reclaim its name and improve on its image by performing the way all Ghanaians expect/desire.
Thanks.

Be too harsh, look at what the NPP and their fanatical supporters like Kwaku Azar have sought to do to our EC,that has done such a marvellous job over a 20-yr period! I only wish the SC panel would cite that rogue Accounting instructor turned a constitutional lawyer for contempt and wait for him to show his courage by bravely deciding to appear before it to demonstrate his new-found legal prowess! You see ,as has been our usual practice, this coward(Azar) will be allowed to get way with all the nonsense he put out in the public domain after the hearings are concluded!
I support the call to recognize the immense contribution Dr. Afari Gyan, an honest and a dedicated public servant, has made in the area of Electoral reforms in this country, before he steps aside!

Prof Lungu, please revisit the entire proceedings from Day 1 through Day 46 with open mind to a shocking revelation of EC's masterful artifice, from duplicate orders of printed materials to reprinting Manuals and Registers as late as July 2013 to support changes made to defend wrong doings. ... and given the same conditions that prevailed during the last elections, Mr Asare would not have found a single thing wrong with the workings and impartiality of the EC and its chairman. It's this arguing the situation for one of a partisan side, and the belief that the EC purposefully stole the elections for one side that make Mr Asare's arguments difficult to believe.
Right now, Mr Asare's hope is that a new presidential election be organized pitting Mahama against Akufo-Addo. Mr Asare thinks Akufo will win such a face-off election. He cannot be sure of that. I don't think many Ghanaians want such a re-election. Only die-hard NPP supporters want such an election. And they are in the minority given that NDC supporters (who are as many as the NPP supporters, if not slightly more) and most of the neutral voters will not want such an election. Many of us will prefer using the lessons learned from the shortcomings of the election, as exposed by the SC court case, to prepare for 2016 which is less than 4 years away.
Prof Lungu, why do you quote yourself extensively (same quote repeated) in your own article that is a rejoinder? One would think the quotes will come from the article to which the rejoinder refers.

Prof Lungu,
I have read through your article twice already and I have been asking myself “what happened to Prof’s usual ‘Ghana-centric’ objectivity? Considering NPP’s 1992 “Stolen Verdict” through the murmurings that have followed EVERY election since 1992, I believe that it is the tolerance, perhaps even fatalism (the ‘fama Nyame’ syndrome) of Ghanaians that has prevented our dear country from falling into the usual “after elections disease” that has plagued the continent of Africa over the past twenty-five or so years, and not any credit to the EC, certainly not in connection with Election 2012.
You say: “After all, the 2012 election was not the first one administered by the same EC. Is this not the same EC that called the election for the NPP the previous 2 presidential elections? Was the EC partisan back then?”
Comment: Yes, Election 2012 is not the first that has been supervised by the commission but it is the first that has involved Biometric registration/verification. Certainly something very curious happened with the Biometric verification exercise. Senegal has the most tried and tested democracy in sub-Sahara Africa. South Africa because of the aftermath of Apartheid, has one of the most politically conscious citizens in the whole of Africa. Our Zimbabwean friends simply take their national IDs to their embassy and vote at election time. Yet none of these countries ever registers more than 45% of eligible voters at election time. Ghana registered a whopping 56% in 2012. In most parts of Ghana, teachers are the most literate people you can readily find. Why were teachers excluded as registration officials even in remote villages where people who can read and write properly are difficult to come by? Don’t these seem curios to you?
The EC has so far only been able to account for just about 750 of those that were registered overseas. An examination of just that number showed 4.96 or 5% duplications. For an election in which the difference between the first and second contestants is less than 2%, that is quite significant.
What was the purpose of printing duplicate, triplicate and quadruplicate pink sheets for the presidential election? Why weren’t the names section left blank, if it was really meant for late entrants, even assuming the actual number of contestants was not known before the materials were printed. That was also a first in Ghanaian elections.
Yes, we agree that errors/fallibility on the part of "one hundred thousand temporary officials, who are trained for only a short time, to conduct...elections in a day or two” is unavoidable. In fact, in most cases, administrative errors have to be significant to affect the outcome of any election, assuming there is a dispute. We find that this is the essence of the EC summary statement.
Comment: Why has the EC not deemed it prudent to train its own electoral officers for twenty year? At least 500 for each region? If the sort of things that even Dr Afari-Djan himself found curios and strange on the pink sheets could be done by trained officials, even if temporary ones, the EC has not been doing a very good job in terms of training election officials, in which case it has really been wasting the Ghanaian taxpayer’s money.
Dr Afari-Djan did not do himself very much credit either. For a man who has been involved in elections in Ghana and around the world for over twenty years to sit in the witness box under oath to claim not to be clear in his mind as to what over-voting was, and to literally buy Asiedu Nketia’s illiterate “foreign material” garbage, painted a very sad picture of honesty in public life in Ghana indeed.
I do not wish to hold brief for Prof Asare because while I do not know him, reading through his articles, I believe he can defend himself. However, as concerned Ghanaians who wish to see the right thing done in our dear country, we can only deal objectively with what is available in the public domain. For me as a scientist, looking at just two things, the ‘voodoo’ mathematics on the pink sheets and “foreign materials”, each of which by itself constitutes more than 15% error, it is not realistic to dismiss them as just “transpositional or clerical “errors.
If we wish to build a democracy that will endure for generations unborn, we cannot do it the sloppy way the EC conducted this particular election, if not in all previous ones! Whatever anyone says about this petition or whatever its outcome, it has been an eye opener to how very lackadaisical we have become as a people and it is all down to a failed education system.
