  Ayi, I don't want to take anything away from this important celebration, but this might be the time to initiate a dialogue about the sphere of influence of chiefs and their traditions. The government should be responsible for gutters just like they are responsible for schools,they can fine people for littering. Everyone in Accra must celebrate HOMOWO. Not only is this a show of respect for the people, it will unify people everywhere.

  It is true that the Homowo Festival, for many reasons, has potential that could have been promoted to become one of the worlds most attractive and endearing cultural festivals. But the traditional owners of the festival themselves, in collusion with corrupt and inept politicians, spoilt it all for the Ga people, the people of Ghana and all the people of the world.
  
  First of all the curious and strange pig-headedness of the Ga people themselves to continue to appoint uncultured and/or unenlightened persons as Chiefs in a metropolitan City and in a world where one has to show mettle of the contemporary kind to survive, is one of the causes for this sad situation.
  
  When people who cannot qualify in any way to be appointed as road-sweepers are 'appointed' under the most doggedly feudalistic and primitive terms of succession and heritage to become major chiefs in Accra, the fast moving capital city of Ghana, what useful benefits can one expect to come out of such persons as Chiefs?
  
  Many existing Ga Chiefs and sub-Chiefs cannot even exert themselves in the public domain even though potentially, they wield so much power - traditionally and in a subtle manner, politically.
  
  As result they have been used, manipulated and misused by delinquent and corrupt politicians with trifles to the greater disadvantage of the Ga people. The exploitation of Ga Chiefs by politicians - particulary since the so-called 4th Republic has been so devastating that the hierarchy of Ga traditional authority is in complete shambles to the extent that perhaps it is only God who may be able to revive the dying institution.
  
  Because the Ga Chiefs have lost the glamor of their power, so have the traditions, the cultural enthusiasm and the loyalty of its people its subjects and the respect of the overwhelming numbers of non-Ga residents also waned.
  
  Just a few years ago, I used to be the happy and eager beneficiary of voluminous quantities of the traditional Kpekple and palm soup with huge chunks of fish and meat from several Ga friends and relations during the peak period of the Homowo festivities. This has however continued to reduce to the extent that this year I only got two of such traditional overtures in extremely minimal quantities.
  
  The twins festival also came and went without much fanfare and I dont even know whether the annual traditional regatta boat race at James Town took place.
  
  As far as I know, no Ga Chief was invited to the Presidency on the eve of the occasion. If that is correct, it was obviously due to the fact that there are a multiplicity of politically backed claimants to the major Ga throne and any attempt by the President to be seen courting any particular one would spell doom in terms of votes for the ruling party.
  
  As a result of the evolving devastation of the Ga state by internecine power struggles and the ensuing political manipulation of various sides, the original natives of the area have felt side-lined and abandoned. Some anarchist Ga elements, obviously out of frustration, have made impetuous incursions into the public domain that were supported by a confounded Ga Mayor who has in the process thoroughly discredited himself. These actions have mainly backfired and have only helped to further belittle the remaining image of goodwill of the Ga people to assert themselves even in the few remaining pockets of native Ga sovereignty.

  Why is Mr. Mensah so SHOCKED that GAs are culturally rich people too? Which Ethnic group in Ghana is not culture rich or is not holding on their culture? From North to South, East to West, Ghana is culturally elaborate and rich, despite the Western influences.
  
  The Western influences have always been there, even from colonial days, but has that weakened Asante culture? or Ewe culture? Or Dagomba culture? NO WAY!
  
  Please Homowo was there before you and I were born, and like other influential cultural celebrations, it will be there even after we have passed on!
