  Dan, I also found it difficult to get the objective of this article. It beings with events in Ghana, moved onto and drifted into other areas and issues and finally landed back home. I thought the author is from the ideological family that considered anything and everything from the western developed world to be golden. It's good he is now questioning that mentality and even seems to suggest that there are other alternatives, including even China. Yes, whether it's the US and their democracy or China with controlled democracy, they all have interests. That is what Ghanaian leaders must be aware and take congnisance of when dealing with them.

  I thought this to be a well written article. We need to go back sometimes to our roots and incorporate the good in it instead of this " hook, line and sink" mentality. Well done " tarzan"

  The writer is simply suggesting that there is a systematic and an ongoing attempt at defining democracy when it is in the interest of the west to do so.Therefore we must also learn to act in our interests even it does not suit the west. His reference to the middle east is just one of those examples of what he terms "the shifting sands" of politics of the west.
  
  A typical example of where the west puts its interests above permanent friendship is Zimbabwe.Their latest election results gave Mugabe a land slide victory which all observers with the exception of those from the west saw as fair and transparent.The opposition had thrown in the towel to indicate that they are no more challenging the elections results but the west is still adamant because they think they can do business better with the opposition.
  
  The underlying conflict there is between the whites and their opposition blacks supporters and the nationalist on the other hand who want fair distribution of lands through land reforms.This has a long history which clearly indicates that whites have had more than their fair share of lands but the west have taken sides with their kinsmen.
  
  WE know of what happened in Libya and the snubbing of the AU and the turmoil presently engulfing the middle east all in the name of western democracy and interests.Even the evident coup in Egypt is being called something different.
  
  Tarzan is suggesting that our interests must come first before our relations with the west.That means defining our priorities away from theirs with our interest as the overriding factor.As Nkrumah said we belong to neither the west nor the the east.Ours must be pragmatism based on our interests.

  When man distinguished himself from nature it was his dream to be free only to create society that took away from him his economic freedom, self respect and freedom of conscience.
  The first man lived in a society of primitive people until one day his neighbour decided to act against nature by taking away from his his freedom, and even had the right to take his life if he wish.
  Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobbey, one thing that make a person an intellectual is to write the truth, not depending on how it hurt you yourself.
  In 2007 the British Broadcasting Corporation showed a video of a hostel on fire in Moscow and it said that Russia was too poor that she could not build a cement hostel for her students, that the structure was made of plywood. The building in case was Block 6 of the former Patrice Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University, Moscow, U.S.S.R. in which this writer had his Preparatory course at that university. The structure is a five story prefabricated concrete panel building covered with tarrazo. Unfortunately this is how the western press distort events, places and even dates before presenting them. There is the case of a road in a village in Iraq being shown to the whole world by CNN as the centre of Baghdad in 2003.
  Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobbey, thus the history of human civilization is the struggle between reason and force, with force and deceit winning up to date.
  Thus in the period of inquisition the Catholic Church arrogated and usurp all the powers of the state and it was a nightmare for Europe. The inquisitors who had ally with the European monarchy were removed by for by the people and renaissance was introduced.
  The introduction of capitalism in Europe was through the force of arms, so was the slave trade, opium wars, decolonization and war of independence by British America. In all that never have the world called for reverts, but those who took power by arms must protect it with arms and that became the rule.
  Some of the twist was the overthrow and killing of Patrice Lumumba, Kwame Nkrumah in 1966, Allende in 1973 and Murmur Ghadaffi in 2011. The majority of those governments were as a result of universal adult suffrage and General Hussein Mobarak's government was no exception. And it is an absurdity to say that Europe established capitalism with armed uprising, U.S. became independence through armed struggle and the same to become the united states of America from which one state has the right to secede.
  On 24th February, 1966 Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's CPP government was elected through universal adult suffrage, thus from the above, all regimes that were established after the illegality are null and void, if we are to go by your reasoning.
  It is on record also that since Europe decided and resolved to do away with Inquisition, she also did away with parties formed on religious or sectarian basis to preserve the peace. We had the twist during our independence when parties were formed on religion, tribal and regional basis. Kwame Nkrumah through parliament introduced the Avoidance of Discrimination Act and abolished parties formed on religion, tribal and regional basis to safe us from the problems that the Middle East, Arabian Gulf and Yugoslavia has gone through or is going through.
  The problem with NATO and U.S. is that they prepare for people socioeconomic portions that they themselves do not like.
  We are all aware that presidents and prime ministers in Europe and U.S. are not elected depending on their membership of the majority of tribe or race. So where is the case that the west want he majority tribe or religious sect to dominate the socioeconomic life of other countries, of which Egypt is a case. That is what underline the conflict in the Afghanistan, Arab world and Yugoslavia. It is on record that the attempt to partition Yugoslavia led to the first world war. Thus all European powers signed an agreement never to support the partition of Yugoslavia because it will lead to civil war. So was the case of spreading Islam and Christianity to the Pacific that has led to the death of thousands. The question to ask is why should NATO member who are signatories to that act break the very act by supporting and arming separatists? Dr. Brobbey you want to tell us that NATO never learns from its mistakes and continue repeating them with people like you on the rightist fringe supporting them. On the Yugoslavia issue it is western leaders who should be in the dock and not Slobodan Melochovich.
  The history of human civilization as we stated is full of twist, turns, reverts and absurdities.
  But mankind has matured and must act sane so as to avoid committing absurdities.On Mugabe we made our point clear in "Stop the Mugabe Bashing".
  We all observed how the United Nation with Ghana in support went to implement the resolutions against Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria, but will not implement the same resolutions against Israel. U.S. will also continue to request for people to be send to the International Criminal Court, but do not want to be a member. Thus this is the inverse world in which we leave, a world full of absurdities.

Don't know! Is he saying the Muslim Brotherhood stood for democracy just because it won an election in Egypt? Don't know! Would he approve of an Islamic/Sharia Republic in Ghana if a party that won an election proclaimed such a state? Don't know! Words, words, words. The guy is "intoxicated by the exuberance of his own verbosity!"

He then urges Ghanains to listen to the will of the people and abide by the final judgement of the SC. Unless you did'nt read or failed to understand the article, I can't understand your deductions at all.
