  trained teacher. students were dying for me to stay during teaching practice. but head said no vacancy. went to ten districts to apply but I believe my application ended up in the trash bin

  I am a fully trained teacher in Ghana and have certifications, training and 16 years of teaching elsewhere. Unfortunately, there is no reason why I will ever encourage any of my kids to TEACH IN GHANA even if they have the yearning for that. This is because of how teachers are treated in Ghana. I love to teach. It is like a family tradition but I am determined to break it. I wish to teach one day in Ghana but will not want to be on the payroll of the government.

  I believe the ban on teacher recruitment was instituted by the GES with the letter effecting that duly signed by the director-general. Thus, she was personally the one who took the decision. Hopefully, the ban can be lifted on a single day just as it was placed same. I share similar experience with you and remain unemployed, but disagree with you when you concluded politically instead of professionally. What does 'God bless Kufuor' got to do with this beautiful write-up? What you and I can do is try to think of a Ghana where political parties will not use their manifestos to amend by default our educational policy.

  Even if u get recruited ur pay will delay for yrs. A friend of mine recruited in march 2012 has still not been paid to date. The mess in that profession is a turn.off

  This problem with the Ghana Education Service has existed for decades. This indeed is a structural problem and as a matter of fact, Ghana is a very backward country. Backward in the sense that our politicians are just stupid fools who are no more sensible than the quark and corrupt pastor. I have great admiration for the original writer for taking such a bold decision to return home. It is normally not easy to go back home especially when the prospects there are so bleak. The heads of all institutions want better trained staff to teach in their school but as correctly stated their hands are well and truly tied. They will not employ lest their staff go hungry in spite of hard and dedicated service to the school. I agree with everybody and I very much sympathise for this couple. Currently, at least three problems are happening at the same time. Firstly, this man is not working and also, his wife is out of work. Worst of all the poor people who should be benefiting from their services are actually losing out.
  
  I experienced a similar problem in 1985 when I qualified to teach in the primary school. I was sent to a village to teach and was unpaid for well over six months. Life was so miserable that I nearly lost my focus. Thankfully, I managed to write 2 ‘A’ levels before getting out of that hell-hole. It was a hell there not because it was a village but for the fact that you were almost forgotten about and believe me it takes real guts to live so isolated on your first post. What is Ghana doing as a civilised, independent and democratic country? Unlike my friend, I have not been that bold to return home from the UK even though I know that this is what I want. I am scared that my children may have to work in the village unpaid irrespective of their profession. More so, our country is too riddled with corruption to the extent that you never know what one’s faith will be tomorrow. Will my children have to sleep with bent and corrupt men including several twits calling themselves pastors before gaining decent employment? It is sad how politicians are wasting the life of the youth in the country. Nobody can single Mahama out though because apart from Nkrumah and JJR, all Ghanaian heads have been useless. Nevertheless, Mahama should be aware that he will be judged not only by his own government but also by Mill’s unbelievable ineptitude hence should start getting harder and brutish. People chastise JJ for being too hard on Mills but I never saw things in that way.
  
  An efficient African President should throw away that nonsense gentility and know that the problem of accountability is a dodgy one in Africa and for that matter, Ghana. They should be proactive, forthright, brutish and ever-present to check politicians and CEOs otherwise nothing will ever get done. Instead, corruption and illicit business attitudes will be the order of the day as it is now. I was surprised that the original writer was in praise of Kuffour. For what, what praise? Please I beg. This is the most corrupt President in the whole of Ghana. Most were inefficient but Kuffour was in addition, just too corrupt for Ghana image and progress. I stopped reading your moving article at that point thanks you were so crafty to have done us this injustice only at the end. You identified corruption as one of the problems leading to Ghana’s woes so what the hell was that praise for Kuffour?
  
  Why can’t jobs be created for ordinary people and why are all these monies being wasted? I blame the governments for all these and in all cases, corruption is the cause. Take the problem of roads for instance, why should our roads be constructed by foreign companies? We could contract out new and major roads to these companies but why our old roads which only require repairs. Nationwide PWDs for instance can create at least one million jobs for the unemployed which will also see all roads constructed neatly even throughout villages. If the President is not madly proactive, where there are no radical controls, nothing will ever get done. With good roads and basic amenities, professionals like teachers and doctors will be willing to spend a few years in the village to help. How do we conduct quality controls on roads and how do we ensure financial propriety and accountability? These are the structural problems this government is struggling to grapple with. These include corruption - bureaucratic inertia; financial indiscipline, tribally-oriented attitudes, nepotism and waste - all being by-products of our unique brand of democracy.
  
  Back to the issue, if there is a ban on employment in the GES, when did this start and how long will this last? I am inclined to believe that this was a short time ago in which case it will be necessary for my friend and the wife to take heart as the government is probably investigating with a view to weeding off all unscrupulous elements within the service. The government/economy of Ghana has been plunged into internally and externally by both petty thieves and organised crime syndicates. Therefore, this government must be red alert to correct it and also, be a bit ‘Mafiosi’ to combat this unpatriotic type of crime within its own internal structures of which the GES has been one since 1980.
  
  You have made the difficult first step to go home so please take heart. Difficult though it seems the actual heads of schools know that you are important to the development of their schools so they will eventually help you. I will not put this one on the government as it follows logic that further recruitment into the service be banned until in depth investigation is conducted to weed out this nonsense ghost names which are depleting the resources of the GES. Also, do not blame Mahama until the political upheavals in Ghana are over. That is if you believe that whole drama has become a major distraction.

  Please my solution to your problem: teach in private schools or better set up your own school. Thinking outside the box will place you better than yoking yourself with GES. Then tomorrow your efforts will benefit yourself, your children and Ghana

How can you exonerate Prez Mahama from blame whilst at the same time blaming Prez Mills, a government Mahama was part of as the most luckiest vice president. Where he was given unfretted access to rule. Hammer give us a break wai. Dont come and add insult to our injury as if we do not what is going on. We are in this mess because of someone's bad financial management and reckless spending during the recent electioneering campaign. If you call someone who inherited a HIPC economy and left with a lower middle income economy as useless, how will you describe another person who took that same economy and we are now hapilly going back to HIPC. Teachers have never had problems with appointment in this country so what has been happening of late is very disappointing at best and disgraceful at worst. The simple truth is that this government is the worst of all governments Ghana has had and it is time for the teachers to think about themselves and how to get out of their predicament. Safety first
