When I was a graduate student at Princeton, in my first year, I visited Bronx where my sister was living in the same apartment complex with Prof Kofi Awoonor. At the time, he was lecturing part time at Columbia and pursuing his final ph.d. dissertation.

What I remember about him is that he would often speak FANTI to my sister encouraging her to be closer to his wife rather than the other gullible, gossipy Ghanaians in the same complex because he found my sister articulate and educated. I spoke often with him in Fanti and he was full of excitement whenever Ghana came up. Even at that time he did not look that old; I am surprised that he was 78. May he rest in peace - those who knew him up close really considered him classy and he fitted into many Ghanaian ethnic groups because he spoke so many Ghana languages.... it was always difficult to pin him as an Ewe. His English was nothing like an ewe accent!!!

Folks - Kofi was no tribalist. He might have been an Ewe nationalist. I found him more Ghanaian than most people; I can say for a fact that he was not ewe-phobic, if there is such a thing!!

Because on this same page, we had Kojo T making senseless accusation and turning a tragedy into tribalism. But many of those under Kojo T's article supporting him will come here and insult Ahoofe.

Ahoofe is an idiot just like Kojo T. Ahoofe was not brought up well. And so I was not shocked to read that his father is even worse than him. It is a case of "Like Father like son" Any Akan who does not know this "never speak ill of the dead" is an idiot, and Ahoofe is no exemption.

Nyansasem, your point on that Kojo T is understandable. I've just read Kojo T's equally shameful and disgusting piece. Both Kojo T and Ahoofe should be condemned in equal measure. How on earth fellow Ghanaians could turn the death of Professor Kofi Awoonor into tribal slugfest is beyond me.

Ahoofe has crossed the line of human decency with his subtle lines of champagne-popping and dancing-on-the-grave vitriol. This shows his hateful and vindictive attitude. Ghanaians don't speak ill of the dead; not too soon after they've passed anyway. Decent people can only feel a human sympathy for his family who have lost someone great.

Regardless of Professor Kofi Awoonor's politics, which people have the right to disagree with, his brilliant books and poems broke through ethnic/tribal walls of Ghana.

Below is my tribute to Professor Awoonor with one of his poems:

Many were killed including 3 former heads of state and senior military officers in govt without fair trials. Market women were whipped and their wares taken. These were the goods they sold to see their families through. The JJ lead army brutally beat, shot, maimed and kill lots of the citizenry. Three high court judges were abducted from their homes and brutally and cowardly murdered by the instructions of the PNDC and their operatives. NOW IF THESE ACTIONS ARE NOT ACTS OF TERRORISM THEN WHAT IS? Prof Awoonor was an important part of the advisory process of the AFRC/PNDC/NDC. Today, the very people who came to stave off corruption are now far more corrupt than what they came to overthrow. The fight is the Lords. You can not cheat your maker. Look at what is happening to our women folk/ traders? Women who are working to make a decent living for themselves and families are being harassed and maltreated. Does government prefer these women to engage in prostitution and other deviant behavior such as armed robbery for a living. Prof. Ahoofe is a joker and he makes me laugh. He is obviously going senile and his brain cells rapidly weakening. Sadly for the Prof. this is an irreversible process. Poor him. As intelligent people we can make a fair and objective assessments and analysis between NDC and NDC taking into consideration the past and recent history of the parties. At least NDC will make Ghana governable.
