  Thank you Mr Baidoo for your indepth and wise analysis. I am happy that we still have many sensible Ghanaians like you to enlighten and advise those in power. The problem is, do these people listen? Are they prepared to make amends? The answer is NO. As long as they have the power to borrow money and pocket it with impunity,no one will listen to any advice. Unfortunately that is what Ghana has come to and there seems to be no end in sight.

  The author's initial quote, that the 'Cedi, [is the] 5th worst currency in Africa', is indeed 'eye-catching'.
  However, if one considers that three of the first four of the currencies in that list are pegged to the South African Rand, and the fourth IS the Rand, the real situation of the Cedi, as is so clearly analysed, is even more alarming than the headline suggests.

  Thank you for the article. Unfortunately it does not follow that if a currency loses .07% in a week, the trend will continue all through the year. In that case it does not and cannot follow that by the end of the year the cedi will have lost third of its value. This does not make the usual economic sense and meaning, so do not confuse people. You know that currency appreciations and depreciations depend on a number of factors - some of these factors or indicators are unpredictable. Mere speculations of certain vital information in a country can affect the rates of currencies. Given situations of unpredictable indicators, please do not carry out any extrapolation exercises to determine how much a currency will have been depreciated at the end of any given period - for there is no way the trends can be held constant as you stated.

However, there is no misdirection here, because I stated categorically clear if the trend is held constant. I cannot believe that anyone will hold on to that without thinking about the fact the alternative is also valid. On the other hand, joggle memory back in time. Since when has the cedi appreciated in value and held its position for even six months. The best it does is depreciate and maintain its value. Now, if you are a good accountant, or economist and and advising your management on decision making you use statistics and extrapolations to determine events in the future. Thanks

  Yes Philip we use trend line analysis and carry out extrapolations, but the kind you presented is that wide and exaggerated to make it right. This is the point I want to bring out. We must be proud of your currency and not write as if all is not well with the use of that currency. Yes, we might have our economic challenges - which even the developed economies have from time to time, but we should not continue to paint gloomy pictures.
