That is the problem Ghana is facing and it all started with our first leader. Some will snob my opinion but as the saying goes, opinion are like noses and they come in different shapes.
Nkrumah during his leadership, did pretty well but it was at that time that he should have LAID A SOLID AND FORTIFIED FOUNDATION of our new nation to stand the test of time. That is where our problems started. We have no sewage system. Accra was not planned and people were allowed to build houses anywhere and anyhow.
He should have inculcate into the national psyche, TRUTH AND THE RULE OF LAW. As a new nation, the people will accept anything that the government puts out there and who in his/her right mind, will frown on the idea of "to be truthful and obey the rule law"? Accepting those two principles would have eschewed corruption and its vices that had crippled our dear nation since independence.
Our nation's future is very bleak because her children are not truthful. They assume power just to loot and share because dirty politics have eaten into them to the extent that they care less about where the nation is heading to.

Those who had been agitating from the signing of the Bond of 1844, through the Aborigines Rights Protection Society to the formation of the United Gold Coast Convention, all had had one aim, the right of the peoples of the Gold Coast, Ashanti Colony and Northern Territories, to rule themselves. With the exception of South Africa that had several decades of preparation before self-rule, even though meant for a small section of the country, the deplorable state of nearly every African country today, has proved those who wanted "Independence at the shortest possible time" right.
Telling a largely illiterate population that independence "will make everything rosy for everybody" conditioned people's minds that "everything would be theirs after they had sought the political kingdom."
Anyone who called for caution was an enemy of the fight, and that has been the bane of our underdevelopment, "them versus us", even when they are stealing the country sh**less, you have to defend the system "if you are with us." Even when a goat is clearly on display for all to see, we can call it a cow!
Nana, I think we all have to get involved. As you rightly pointed out, 80% of us come from villages. It is the ignorance and poverty of our rural kinsmen that the politicians have been playing on to continue to take the country in circles. I believe that we have to make the politicians pay for their incompetence and dishonesty. We need to mobilise our rural brothers and sisters to punish the politicians for their ills. If we have to elect a new party every four years, so be it. Let us punish non-performing parties until the politicians begin to take note of the people who elect them and pay for their undeserving lifestyles.

This implies that President John Mahama has contracted a total of GHc15.6 billion of debt for Ghanaians since becoming the President of Ghana.
