The turbaned gunmen who infiltrated Nairobi's Westgate Mall arrived with a set of religious trivia questions: As terrified civilians hid in toilet stalls, behind mannequins, in ventilation shafts and underneath food court tables, the assailants began a high-stakes game of 20 Questions to separate Muslims from those they consider infidels.
A 14-year-old boy saved himself by jumping off the mall's roof, after learning from friends inside that they were quizzed on names of the Prophet Muhammad's relatives. A Jewish man scribbled a Quranic scripture on his hand to memorize, after hearing the terrorists were asking captives to recite specific verses. Numerous survivors described how the attackers from al-Shabab, a Somali cell which recently joined al-Qaida, shot people who failed to provide the correct answers.
Their chilling accounts, combined with internal al-Shabab documents discovered earlier this year by The Associated Press, mark the final notch in a transformation within the global terror network, which began to rethink its approach after its setbacks in Iraq. Al-Qaida has since realized that the indiscriminate killing of Muslims is a strategic liability, and hopes instead to create a schism between Muslims and everyone else, whom they consider "kuffar," or apostates.
"What this shows is al-Qaida's acknowledgment that the huge masses of Muslims they have killed is an enormous PR problem within the audience they are trying to reach," said Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, director of the Center for the Study of Terrorist Radicalization. "This is a problem they had documented and noticed going back to at least Iraq. And now we see al-Qaida groups are really taking efforts to address it."
The evolution of al-Shabab is reflected in a set of three documents believed to be written by the terrorist group, and found by the AP in northern Mali earlier this year. They include the minutes of a conference of 85 Islamic scholars, held in December 2011 in Somalia, as well as a summary of fatwas they issued last year after acceptance into the al-Qaida fold.
Baptized with the name al-Shabab, meaning The Youth, in 2006, the group began as an extremist militia, fighting the government of Somalia. As early as 2009, it began courting al-Qaida, issuing recordings with titles like, "At Your Service Osama."
Until the Westgate attack, the group made no effort to spare Muslim civilians, hitting packed restaurants, bus stations and a government building where hundreds of students were awaiting test results. And until his death in 2011, Osama bin Laden refused to allow Shabab into the al-Qaida network, according to letters retrieved from his safehouse in Pakistan. The letters show that the terror leader was increasingly troubled by regional jihadi operations killing Muslim civilians.
In a letter to Shabab in 2010, bin Laden politely advised the Somali-based fighters to review their operations "in order to minimize the toll to Muslims." Shabab did not get the green light to join al-Qaida until February 2012, almost a year after bin Laden's death.
In an email exchange this week with The Associated Press, it made its intentions clear: "The Mujahideen carried out a meticulous vetting process at the mall and have taken every possible precaution to separate the Muslims from the Kuffar before carrying out their attack." However, even at Westgate, al-Shabab still killed Muslims, who were among the more than 60 civilians gunned down inside.
Their attack was timed to coincide with the highest traffic at the upscale mall after 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 21, a Saturday. More than 1,000 people, including diplomats, pregnant women with strollers and foreign couples, were inside when the fighters armed with grenades and AK-47s burst in and opened fire. At first the attack had the indiscriminate character of all of Shabab's previous assaults.
Rutvik Patel, 14, was in the aisles at Nakumatt, the mall's supermarket which sells everything from plasma TVs to imported kiwis, when he heard the first explosion. "They started shooting continuously, and whoever died, died," he said. "Then it became calm and they came up to people and began asking them some questions. If you knew the answer, they let you go," he said. "They asked the name of the Prophet's mom. They asked them to sing a religious verse."

Just across from the Nakumatt supermarket, a 31-year-old Jewish businessman was cashing a check inside the local Barclays branch when he, too, heard the shooting. The people there ran to the back and shut themselves in the room with the safe, switching off the lights. They learned, via text messages, that the extremists were asking people to recite an Arabic prayer called the Shahada.
"One of the women who was with us got a text from her husband saying, they're asking people to say the Islamic oath, and if you don't know it, they kill you," said the businessman, who insisted on anonymity out of fear for his safety.
He threw away his passport. Then he downloaded the Arabic prayer and wrote it on his palm.
Al-Shabab's attempts to identify Muslims are clear in the 16-page transcript from the conference of Islamic scholars held in the Somali town of Baidoa, an area known to be under Shabab control in 2011, according to Somalia specialist Kenneth Menkhaus, a political science professor at Davidson College in North Carolina. The scholars issued several fatwas defining exactly who was a Muslim and who was an apostate.
The document states it is halal, or lawful, to kill and rob those who commit crimes against Islam: "The French and the English are to be treated equally: Their blood and their money are halal wherever they may be. No Muslim in any part of the world may cooperate with them in any way. ... It leads to apostasy and expulsion from Islam," it says. Further on it adds: "Accordingly, Ethiopians, Kenyans, Ugandans and Burundians are just like the English and the French because they have invaded the Islamic country of Somalia."
Former FBI supervisory special agent Ali Soufan, who investigated the bombing of the United States embassies in East Africa as well as the attack on the USS Cole, said that the gathering of dozens of religious scholars in an area under Shabab control harkens back to an al-Qaida conference in Afghanistan around 1997. That conference defined America as a target, Soufan said, leading to the bombing of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.
"You see something very similar here," said Soufan. "It's the same playbook."
In a second document dated Feb. 29, 2012 — just two weeks after al-Shabab joins al-Qaida — the organization warns Muslims to stay away from buildings occupied by non-Muslims, chillingly predicting and justifying the death of Muslims at Westgate.
"And so all Muslims must stay far away from the enemy and their installations so as not to become human shields for them, and so as not to be hurt by the blows of the mujahedeen directed at the Crusader enemies," it says. "There is no excuse for those who live or mingle with the enemies in their locations."
Yet at the same time it says: "The mujahideen are sincere in wanting to spare the blood of their brother Muslims, and they don't want a Muslim to die from the bullets directed at the enemies of God."
This is a concession for an organization that since its inception had killed people constantly, said Rudolph Atallah, who tracked Shabab as Africa counterterrorism director in the Office of the Secretary of Defense from 2003 to 2007.
View gallery."
A mourner walks past portraits of Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta's nephew Mbugua Mwangi, left, and …
"They would just go and mow people down," Atallah said. "They are now sending a clear message that, 'Look, we're different ... We're no longer indiscriminately killing. We're protecting innocent Muslims and we are trying to kill quote-unquote 'infidels,' nonbelievers."
A similar tactic paid off in January after al-Qaida-linked terrorist Moktar Belmoktar attacked a gas installation in Algeria, Atallah said. When his fighters freed hundreds of Muslim employees, a Facebook page dedicated to him exploded with "Likes."
Several hours after the gunshots at Westgate Mall, the people cowering inside the Barclays bank heard a commotion. As the attackers approached, the Jewish businessman spit on his hand to erase the words he had by then committed to memory.
The door opened.
He exhaled. It was the police.
Several floors above, 14-year-old Patel looked for a place to hide on the roof. When the jihadists came up the stairs and threw a grenade, he didn't hesitate. He jumped, crushing his ankle on the pavement below.
He said he would not have known how to answer their questions.

When I was a graduate student at Princeton, in my first year, I visited Bronx where my sister was living in the same apartment complex with Prof Kofi Awoonor. At the time, he was lecturing part time at Columbia and pursuing his final ph.d. dissertation.
What I remember about him is that he would often speak FANTI to my sister encouraging her to be closer to his (Kofi's) wife rather than the other gullible, gossipy Ghanaians in the same complex because he found my sister articulate and educated. I spoke often with him in Fanti and he was full of excitement whenever Ghana came up. Even at that time he did not look that old; I am surprised that he was 78. May he rest in peace - those who knew him up close really considered him classy and he fitted into many Ghanaian ethnic groups and backgrounds because he spoke so many Ghana languages.... it was always difficult to pin him as an Ewe. His English was nothing like an ewe accent!!! He reminded me that part of Awonoor-Williams larger family hails from Saltpond in the Central Region, just like the Renners.
Folks - Kofi was no tribalist. He might have been an Ewe nationalist. I found him more Ghanaian than most people; I can say for a fact that he was neither an ewe-phobic nor akan-phobic, if there are such things. He was simply a Ghanaian Nationalist

You wrote a very brilliant article than needs recommendations. To answer my question as to the crime of Ewes in Ghana, I have come to conclude that what Ewes as a minority group are experiencing in Ghana is not unique to Ghana. The same is happening all over Africa and most of the world.
Where ever the minority actively participates in politics they have almost always been a target for the majority. Active Ewe participation in Ghanaian politics is a direct result of the back lash they have often received in Ghana.
On the other hand if they had simply ignored politics or minimize participation in active politics like other minority groups most of the majority wouldn't have an issue with them. They might even try to woe them into their camps.
Like I said the same is all over Africa be it in the East, North, West, or South. Ewes may need to do a lot to develop their region and minimize excessive dependency of their people on government jobs which is what I think irks the majority especially in the NPP camp the most
Thank You.

How did Awoonor do that? The book blamed for his "offending" statement was published in 1984 and covered events pre-dating the 31 Dec. coup. So, how Awoonor (or even JJ) be blamed for something which was already in full swing?
Most educated Ghanaians, including Ewes, haven't even seen the book before!
As a matter of fact, Awoonor was explaining and condemning the ethnocentrism which Busia and the PP had introduced into the post 1966 coup period too. He correctly blamed Akans, "Asantes" in particular for starting it and the evidence is there for all to see. Being a man of his age, I am sure he used "Asante" in the generic sense to embrace all the Akan groups under the old Asante kingdom and tend to identify with Asante interests as expressed through the Matemeho tradtion; not only those from within the present A/R.
Dennis Austin captured it in a book published in 1976, while Awoonor was probably still in prison for helping Brig. Kattah to evade arrest. I have quoted that in a article explaining how ethnocentric prejudices and politics started in present Ghana against Ewes. I shall re-post it below.

THE ETHNIC IMBROGLIO IN GHANA: THE ORIGINS, PART 1
The tribal imbroglio, rather than starting in recent times, has been brewing for a long, long while now. In fact, the roots of the prejudices and the insults we see some raining on others date back to pre-colonial times. So, any attempt to understand the worrying phenomenon must address the canker from that era. That is what I intend to do, with special focus on the apparent cleavage between Ewes and Akans (and any others). But now, I’d begin with the colonial times. When you hear the cry of lamentation:
Dza le le leeeeeee!
Me zu kluvi
The road to Kontsiabu
Strewn with gold dusts.
Only those without
in their eyes gold dusts
felt the pangs of hunger and thirst…
then you’d know that the time to narrate the doleful tales of the pre-colonial era, where it all began, has arrived; but you’d get a glimpse now.
Not to waste time apportioning blame, the Akans (and Gas, if I may add them), started these tribal abuse and attacks on Ewes many decades ago; nay, centuries back, as I said earlier. But as mentioned above, I won't delve as yet into the pre-colonial times when it was free for all, with even some Ewe states joining in marauding and plundering other Ewe states for the slave markets of the Gold Coast. I had indeed provided a write up on that sordid era on Ghanaweb’s SIL in the 1990s, which is available. One German businessman with biz connections to Ghana who used to read the nonsense on SIL wrote a private mail to me saying that he was always wondering why Africans sold each other into slavery to Europeans and Arabs; reading my detailed historical account enlightened him on how and why it happened for the first time. That story must be re-told all over Africa in other to understand the roots of the conflicts that bedevilled the continent after independence.
In Ghana, the colonial times modern version started after the WW1 when Anlo, Tongu and Peki migrants from within the Gold Coast and those from the newly acquired TVT from the Germans started moving to the Akan and Ga areas to either fish, farm or seek paid employment. Ewes from Togo and Benin Republic (Dahomey) escaping from French repressive rule came later. Some Ewes, esp. the educated ones, also got jobs with the commercial houses and the colonial administration. Some, such as Gbedema and Nkulenu, started their own private businesses. Soon, they were becoming prosperous in their chosen fields and/or rising up in the ranks wherever they were employed due to the usual hard working nature of most migrants. After all, the far superior German missionary vocational educational set up, compared to the British, had equipped them much better with skills in the crafts and building, such as carpentry and masonry, which were in much demand by the colonial authority and the other natives of the Gold Coast and Asante. That was when trouble began and the attacks started, as far back as the 1930s.
Below is a brief quote from S. Greene about how the Fantes started perceiving Anlo-Ewe fisher folk; a perception or prejudice which is not much different from what permeates the Akan ethnic group as a whole up to today (not only a few bigots on Ghanaweb). Ewes find out to our chagrin or amusement, often as a kid, that that was how our fellow country men and women perceive us. The encounter is therefore a personal story too.
Not much has changed in the prejudiced minds of too many Akans, as we daily witness on Ghanaweb, even though many too have developed over the years an obsession or desire to marry Ewe girls, failure which often brought in its wake stories of tribalism heaped against Ewes. As I told some Akan teacher colleagues in Nigeria, it was the scary and “irrational” Akan “wofa” (uncle) inheritance system, stupid! Horrible stories of how Ewe widows were in particular dispossessed and treated shabbily were enough to dissuade any idea of marriage to even a most love besotted Akan man! It is no wonder that, with the interstate law of inheritance in place, marriage to Akan men has been on the increase.
I know an Ewe from the Peki area who swore that it’d never be possible to change the jaundiced perception of Akans of Ewes from his own experiences attending Mpraeso Teacher Training College, and then teaching at Mpraeso and in Kumasi. He said one particular woman - a cook in the school - they used to go to church with wouldn’t believe that he did not have any “ekpelekpedzi” under their bed! I said it was possible and gave an example of my own experiences in Nigeria. I managed to convince my fellow Akan teachers that I don’t indulge nor believe in those things - juju or voodoo or even any god (white or black), and wouldn’t drink “ogogoro” with them – when there is original Gordon’s gin and lime cordiale to have – and they somehow lost some “respect”, (or was it fear?) for me. They’d say I wasn’t a proper Anloman and fool around with me!
Between 1982-4, when their Anti-Ewe diatribes had reached fever point and they were advocating massacring Ewes as done to the Ibos in Nigeria who they claimed were also allegedly dominating Nigeria in the 1960s, I thought of putting some fear into them by creating some “kporsi” (“see-and-run”) to scare them. Fact is, practically every smart Ewe knows how to scare Akans and Gas even though they don’t have “foko” (anything), as we say in Anlo but I will keep that out of this write up. Good I didn’t do so, otherwise they’d be giving testimonies up to today about what an Anlo teacher did to them in Nigeria – they’d have packed out and run from their rooms on the ground floor of the storey building we were hiring. I “protected” myself practically by chocking the door handle with a chair, as I had seen in movies, before I went to bed, in order to prevent them from making me the first casualty of their let-us-kill-Ewes mania! Funny some of them even became staunch PNDC supporters, only to change their minds again years later when I met some on a visit to Ghana.
Anyway, enough with the digression into the personal narrative and to Sandra Greene.
From p.148 of Sandra Greene I quote:
"Increased Anlo identification with their northern Ewe-speaking neighbours may have also been enhanced by the experience many had while participating in migrant fishing. After World War I, numerous groups of Anlo men and women traveled to other coastal areas, including the Fante area of the Gold Coast, in order to pursue their commercial fishing activities. For many, this was probably the first time they had traveled outside their home area, and/or to a district where they were a distinct linguistic minority. In these locations, they conducted themselves as they had in their own home villages, but those among whom they come to live - often temporarily, just for the fishing season - came to view the Anlos' prosperity with jealousy and suspicion. Stories circulated that associated the Anlo with "blood-curdling" crimes. R.W. Wyllie indicates, for example, that from at least the 1930s "Fanti [children] learned to view the Anlos as thieves, kidnappers, sorcerers, and ritual murderers." The social tensions that accompany these beliefs - and the very fact that these beliefs were held by a non-Ewe speaking people - must have heightened the Anlo's awareness of their linguistic and cultural background and generated some sense of identification with their Ewe-speaking peoples whom they would have encountered in the Gold Coast."
The encounter with the Gold Coasters was enough to turn any Ewe into a paranoid schizophrenic, developed a siege mentality (become “inward-looking”?) and very resentful towards any idea of union with the Gold Coast, not to mention marry an Akan.
As some of you know, the Anlo area through Tongu to the Peki area had been part of the Gold Coast colony proper, effectively from 1874 though the British “bought” and claimed the area from the Danes in 1850; hence the freedom to move to other parts of the Gold Coast and Asante later. Besides, many southern Ewes are descendants of Ga-Adangbe, Elmina and Denkyira fugitives dating back respectively to 1687 when the Akwamus first thrashed the Gas for cutting the “bolobolo” (foreskin) of their prince sent to the Ga Mantse Okai Koi’s court to understudy courtship, and 1700, when the Asantes defeated the Denkyiras and took over Elmina from the Denkyiras. Going back to Ge (Accra) and Sima (Shama) with their new kinsmen was just like returning to the ancestors' land. In fact, it was the descendants of those fugitives who were the first migrants, having maintained links with their ancestral lands during their long period in exile. Reindorf had written about that back and forth movement among the Ga fugitives long ago. That’s how Osu-Anecho came to be founded and how all Ewes got the derogatory epithet “Ayigbe” (Ayi refuse), whether they were descendants of fugitives or not. The “dzulor” bit the Gas added originally referred to the Okai Koi stool regalia which the Ga-Ewes in Togo refused to return to Accra and still claim to be its protectors. Remember the trips with pre-colonial undertones their chiefs made to Ghana when the NPP took over power in 2000?
We read from the December 6, 1919 edition of the West Africa magazine a letter sent to the colonial government of the Gold Coast:
“We PEOPLE of Togoland, descended from two principal countries, Elmina
(Ane) and Accra (Ge), both of the Gold Coast Colony, ask to have British government because it is the government of our fathers, whose customs are our customs, and a British Colony is half-an-hour distant from us.
We ask to have British government because it is the government of our kith and kin, our race and our tribe.
We ask for British government because of our relationship with our people on the west, which must assert itself..” (culled from West Africa 12-16 Dec. 1994)
And so on it went. I can make long comments on the above quotes but suffice it to say that it was the beginning and end of the love affair which started as unification with the Gold Coast movement ending up as the drive to secede from the Gold Coast.
One may wonder why the petitioners did not even acknowledge the Ewes, Dagombas, Konkombas, Akans and the host of other ethnic and tribal groups in Togo who also have their “kith and kin” within the Gold Coast and the Northern Territories. I guess this piece of history may come as a surprise to the ingrates who make a living of always reminding us that Ewes come from Togo, some of whom carried a video to Lome to trace the roots of Fiifii Kwetey there, instead of doing so in Accra; better still, Ayawaso! Well, he said he was from Nogokpo, which rubbed a sore spot for me, but that’s another, story.
THE EWE BACKLASH
By the 1940s, Ewes, Anlos in particular, in the Gold Coast had had enough of the vilification and undeserved demonisation their successes were arousing. The returnee Anes and Ges (Gas), now fused as the Genyi, as Anlos refer to them, through intermarriages, also soon discovered that they were not welcome, or often welcomed with shouts of “Ayigbe dzulor”! Disenchantment set in and secession from Ghana became a far better option. The result was the 1956 plebiscite and the rest is history.
Then come the post Feb 24 1966 coup era, when Busia and his PP turned this traditional vilification of Ewes into a political tool to win the 1969 general elections. It was preceded by an internal struggle within the NLC to share the spoils of office after the coup, which increasingly took an ethnic tone. My own father was a sacrificial victim. An extended quote from Dennis Austin, that great chronicler of Ghana history, captures the gist of it, so here we go:
“A surprising and disagreeable novelty of the election was the extraordinary anti-Ewe sentiment that was express1ed in conversation with many of those who were against Gbedemah and his party. One can explain this strong animus not simply by a dislike of Gbedema’s reappearance in political life but in relations to events after the 1966 coup. Suddenly there were the soldiers and the police, and everyone burst out singing, but when the music died down away it was noticed that the NLC (it seemed) was commanded by minorities: Ewe and Ga. When Ankrah (a Ga), was moved out, and charges were brought over-hastily by Harlley against the Chief of Defence Staff, Michael Otu, the evidence to many was overwhelming. It was all an Ewe plot. Soon Ghana would be run for the benefit of an energetic minority, operating first within the armed forces, and now behind Gbedemah. ‘Appoint an Ewe to a public corporation or to a government department and within a year the entire hierarchy down to the messenger will be an Ewe.’ So the argument ran. And there was always some evidence for it, since the Ewe, deprived of any natural wealth in their own barren region, have been energetic in seizing the opportunities of public employment, including positions in the army and the police, which wealthier communities (like the Akan) did not wish to occupy. In practice, looking through the list of senior officers in government department and the public corporations, the evidence is certainly not clear of any Ewe domination: it could hardly be in view of their number. But a belief does not, of course, have to be true before people hold it fervently.
Now there is an Akan-dominated government of an Akan dominated society. Were I to become, by some improbable chance of fate, leader of the governing party I would be much less apprehensive of my Ewe opponents in front than of the large and expectant following behind. I would be fearful too of the ambitions of those now excluded from power, remembering the Songs of Innocence that:
The strongest poison ever known
Came from Caeser’s laurel crown” (D. Austin 1976:125)
Austin was writing with hindsight about what befell Busia’s regime, overthrown in a coup led by an Asante.
The interested reader is referred to the link on the Internet to read an extended abstract of the book in order to get a fuller understanding of the ethnic imbroglio in Ghana and so be able to compare events from then and now and subsequent analysis.

In Part 2, I intend to examine the hate campaign against the Ewes and the consequences or reactions from the 1970s which led to Kofi Awoonor’s infamous prison book, The Ghana Revolution, which he claimed he wrote in prison when gaoled for helping Brig. Kattah to escape from Ghana. It’d be necessary to focus on the Ghana Army, from its origins and recruitment trends since it is at the crux of the matter.

Hei, Kofi Awoornoo personified tribalism, divisiveness , Nyebroism and hate of Akans and Asantes in particular and this is well documented . His rant of "I am Ewe first before a Ghanaian " means his allegiance is to Ewes first no matter where they come from whether Togo or Benin. Is this not evident that he is not a patriotic Ghanaian ? You see , no matter how eloquently you want to portray him as a patriot, a saint, or agood man ,he was and will ever be seen as Adolf Hitler incarnate in Ghana. His Nyebroism philosophy is well established in the Ewe psyche. Even in diaspora , when the Ewe umbrella organization CEANA holds their annual conventions, they do not invite Ghanaian associations, rather they invite their " brothers and sisters " from Benin and Togo .Does that not tell you something , an you think Ghanaians are that foolish ?

This guy who call's himself an akan name Kwarteng but an ewe doesn't know what he is talking about, why and when was the sagranti war? Why and when was the Yaa Asantewaa war? and does this guy know that there is a fort in Kumasi? And why did the white man built that fort? if you don't have a history in Ghana don't bring yourself , I don't understand these ewes always trying to compare themselves to the Ashanti/Akans.What at all do you need from them? Ashantis never voted to join Ghana but you did and let me remind you that before and during the whiteman there was no province in Ghana by name Brong/Ahafo it was rather western Ashanti if you don't know our history learn and don't rewright it, part of central, part of western and the whole of Brong /Ahafo were Ashanti. It was Dr. Nkrumah who demarcated to make it look the way it is today because Ashanti was too big even he was about to demacate Akim Oda to the central region when Kwame Kwakye refused.Do you people think we are dumbs and that we don't know our history? Our grandmothers and grandfathers, our mothers and fathers told us everything about Gold Coast and Ghana so I have also told my kids to also tell their kids so the history of this country don't get loss for some people to lie about history to them.I want to tell this writer that Ghana history was all about Ashanti, Akwamu, Akyim, Fanti, Ga, the Guans , Denkyira a little about Nzima and the north so if Ashanti were not among how did they get their history in Ghana books during Osagyefo's time? There was no history about ewes, he should give us a break every Gold Coaster knows Ashanti Gold was in the hands of the whiteman. If you don't have nothing to offer Ghana don't rewright our history. The timber, gold, cocoa, bauxite that the whiteman was exporting to his country were they from trans- volta togoland? Jealousy, enviness wouldn't land you anywhere.KOFI AWOONOR WAS A BIGOT PERIOD nothing will change that.

This is one of the most interesting "pushback" I have read on this forum. I have not read the original piece but I kind of get the drift. I can imagine the venom that followed. So, I am going to read the original tribute to Dr. Kofi Awoonor.
The harsh reality of American racism has taught me never to discriminate against my own kind, whether Ewe, Ga, Dagomba, Luo, Fante, Asante, Ga-Adangbe, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Oromo, Zulu, Wolof, Kikuyu, etc. Why can’t we all do the same?
That's a very good question. Unfortunately, Racism in America has infected too many of our people living in America to the point that some Africans shun African Americans because of ignorance borne out of media's stereotyping of our African American "relatives." I anticipate a lively discussion on this subject. Hopefully it will be a civil discussion.

Ha,this article finds great resonance with me.Having married a kenyan lady, our respectful families in Ghana and Kenya always remind us that our inter tribal marriage has less stigma bcoz my Ashanti folks are far away from my wife's Kikuyus. So the usual petiness, stereotypes and rivalry makes our union more acceptable than if it had been an inter tribal union from within tribally fractured Ghana or Kenya.I'm also glad for my hybrid Ashanti-Kikuyu kids.
Tribal wars will not take us anywhere and it disheartening to see the Ashanti-Ewe rivalry in Ghana then witness the Kikuyu-Luo tension in kenya. If Mr Awoonor had been a naturalised Ghanaian of Luo, Zulu,Tutsi or Tigrinya origins then all Ghanaians would have been unquestioningly proud of him as one of their illustrious son. But,alas our familiarity and cohabitation in one "united Ghana" has divided us moreand made enemies out of our own brothers.

Soulmate Francis,
What can I say? You couldn't have nailed it any better!
Practically all the people making those vile remarks about Prof. Awoonor didn't read his book "The Ghana Revolution." Their insults and criticism of him are based on hearsay and get more and more distorted by the day.
The context within which he made the alleged offending remarks is totally lost, leaving some banal accusations with no bearing on the extensive facts he presented and analysis made. I've been presenting an indep source, Dennis Austin, which captured the attacks and hounding of Ewes by Busia's PP during and after the 1969 Gen, Elections which spilt over into the Kutu era.
They are so ignorant of the facts that they did not know that the book was published in 1984, long after most of the things the book allegedly inspired happened. By 1984, the worst of the abuses of the PNDC era had ended, with the adoption of SAP under the IMF/World Bank supervision.
Here is a link to the book.

WHO NEED TO LEAVE AWOONOR ALONE!
Awoonor never apologized for his tribe-over-country philosophy. And neither should those who parade themselves all pimped-up in garish robes of uber-alles intellectualism. It's a convenient, cheap ploy to legitimize Awoonor's tribe-first philosophy with the fact of his birth preceeding the birth of Ghana. First, Ghana may not have existed in 1935 but there was a distinct, colonial entity known as the Gold Coast that defined the people within its geographical borders and, needless to say, distinct from other colonies in Africa. Then also, even more puzzling to understand the birth-before-Ghana argument, Awoonor did not declare his tribal primacy philosophy during the Gold Coast era. He is said to have made that declaration in the nineties!
We are not impressed by the opportunistic citations of the opinions of eminent personalities or the phoney rationalizations couched in academic terminology. One can appreciate Awoonor's contribution to literature and his legacy as a teacher without endorsing his politics or personal philosophy.
Awoonor does have a mixed legacy clear to the objective mind. Indeed, until his death he had boxed himself into the obscurity of a lifetime Ghanaian political opportunist. His books had not become sacred-writ in Ghana and his dramaturgy was even less known to the general public. Truly, Awoonor's navigational skills in the world of political opportunism trumps any of his legacies here in Ghana. Consider the conflicting and conflicted sobriquets: A tribe-before-country "pan-Africanist", we are told, who was "close" to the great theoretician, Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, himself. The Ambassador to Cuba, who declares in Western interviews how life in Cuba was "too regimented" for him. And his final crowning glory, the political appointment to the Council Of State, as in all his political appointments, by the NDC founded by - according to the tribe-over-country perspective - his comrade Ewe, Jerry John Rawlings! The "close" disciple (or perhaps confidante) of Osagyefo, of course, never saw anything wrong with the continuation of the honour bestowed on the anti-Nkrumah coup-maker, Kotoka. Nor the undemocratic character of the P/NDC regimes and their atrocities and corruption.
Objective minds and true Nkrumahists are vigilant and see through the mass-opportunism for material benefits that has characterized the political history of our nation. It was manifest right after Nkrumah was overthrown with defections and denunciations by leading CPP officials and government figures. It was manifest when CPP members flocked to Gbedemah's NAL, on seeing the brand-new cars he had brought for his campaign - instead of flocking to Johnny Hansen's genuinely-Nkrumahist party. The same opportunism was manifest in the defection to the NDC by many CPP members. And needless to say, it was the same opportunism-for-material benefits manifest in Awoonor's association with the P/NDC. We expose, denounce and reject opportunists of all persuasions. The time is long past for there to be patriots who overcome tribe and material inducements and stand for principle. Ghana before self! Ghana before tribe! Long live Nkrumah's undivided Ghana!

Wow Ghana before First: When I was a graduate student at Princeton, in my first year, I visited Bronx where my sister was living in the same apartment complex with Prof Kofi Awoonor.
He was simply a Ghanaian Nationalist:

A WOONOR LEADS CRISIS VOLTA MEETING
From Prosper Klu Amevor, Sogakope, online Chronicle of Thursday, October 09, 1997
A SPECIAL FORUM on the Volta Region organized to identify development and investment potentials has taken place at Sogakope. The aim of the forum was to identify both internal and external factors considered to be responsible for the lack of development and investment in the region and also suggest ways of over-coming such problems.
Under the chairmanship of Professor Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor-Williams, a Minister of State and the “Agbonugla” of the Anlo state, the forum was attended by all Volta MPs, Ministers, former PNDC Secretaries from the region, including Dr. Asamoah Tutu, Professor Komla Amoako, Director of the National Theatre, Mr. Mawuli Tse of Africa-on-Line, Dr. Charles Asembri, Commissioner of CEPS and all the 12 district chief executives.
Others were Mr. Kwame Addo, a business mogul and Mr. Alex Ashiagbor, former Governor of Bank of Ghana and Chief of the Financial Sector Adjustment Programme (FINSAP).
It was also convened at the instance of Professor Awoonor and the Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC).
The meeting identified some of the internal problems as lack of unity in the region as is manifested in the North-South dichotomy, apathetic attitude of well-placed citizens of the region in government and other high places towards the development of the region and lack of support from the RCC and some former Regional Ministers.
Others include lack of aggressive attitude towards canvassing for projects for the region and the poor infrastructure base of the region.
As one participant put it, “I am shocked, at least 95 percent of government machinery heads are from the Volta Region but they do not care in the least to think about the betterment of that region. This is our last chance. Don’t let it slip from us. We would have support from the leader.”
It also identified major external factors that are responsible for the downward trend of development in the region as conspiracy of certain unknown forces to deny the Volta Region its fair share of the national cake.
“We are moving mountains and leaving no stones unturned to nip in the bud the conspirators,” the forum declared.
They suggested the establishment of an appropriate institutional framework to promote development in the region, the setting up of a Volta Regional Investment Promotion Centre with its capital/base at Ho to recruit and retain officers who can develop feasibility studies and business plans and to identify various sources of finance and technical management.
“When it comes to funding of major projects in other regions of the country, money was made available but when it comes to the turn of the Volta Region, there is no funding. After all, we are the World Bank. We must now show our World Bank Class.”
Five working groups were established to give effects to their suggestions and recommendations. They include Agriculture and Agro Investment Committee under the chairmanship of Togbe Kwao Anipati, with four other members including Dr. Charles Asembri, Commissioner of CEPS, Resource Mobilization Committee under the chairmanship of Mr. Alex Ashiagbor, a former BoG Governor, and Tourism and Infrastructure Committee, headed by Dr. Glover. The rest are Committee on Industries to be chaired by Mr. Prosper Adamali, and Education Committee, to be chaired by Dr. N. Sodzi, a former Principal at Accra Polytechnic, Accra.
The groups have been tasked to prepare working papers which would form the basis for their discussions at their next meeting.
The forum has also resolved to establish a VR Development Fund which is targeting to yield about 200 million cedis by December, this year, and all well meaning Voltarians are expected to contribute a minimum sum of 500,000 cedis towards the fund. They have also tasked the Regional Minister, LT. Col. Charles Agbeneza (rtd) and Mr. Alex Ashiagbor to mobilize financial support from the founding members.
Volta Region indeed is one of the least developed regions in the country though its indigenes prefer to invest in Accra and other parts of the country.

The fingers beat drums to make music,so also our fingers spread ink to make music. Through music we make connections we cannot make otherwise.
Most successful people draw on what they find to have sustained their race, ethnicity, family, individual etc.
It is time to look at our creator for help to "li ke" all of us not just some of us. "Li ke" is an Ewe expression meaning "sim" Let those who have ear hear.

In all seriousness, you are a genius!!! You are supremely sophisticated! Extraordinarily refined. Your thought process, construction of your premises and syntax tells me that you are special. Which is kind of sad. Why? Because your thought process should not be unique to the Ghanaian experience at this stage of our co-existence.
I can't continue because I 'm getting sad.
Anyway, I'm proud of you. People like you give me hope that all is not lost.
Dr.SAS is another genuine guy with superior intellect, though he does surprise me sometimes with some of his positions, but I know he ain't perfect.
Cheers, Francis. I'm too recluse to contact you in the future for friendship. I have stayed away from the Ghanaian community for a long long time for the reasons you alluded to in your master piece.

This guy who call's himself an akan name Kwarteng but an ewe doesn't know what he is talking about, why and when was the
sagranti war? Why and when was the Yaa Asantewaa war? and does this guy know that there is a fort in Kumasi? And why did
the white man built that fort? if you don't have a history in Ghana don't bring yourself , I don't understand these ewes always
trying to compare themselves to the Ashanti/Akans.What at all do you need from them? Ashantis never voted to join Ghana but
you did and let me remind you that before and during the whiteman there was no province in Ghana by name Brong/Ahafo it
was rather western Ashanti if you don't know our history learn and don't rewright it, part of central, part of western and the whole
of Brong /Ahafo were Ashanti. It was Dr. Nkrumah who demarcated to make it look the way it is today because Ashanti was too
big even he was about to demacate Akim Oda to the central region when Kwame Kwakye refused.Do you people think we are
dumbs and that we don't know our history? Our grandmothers and grandfathers, our mothers and fathers told us everything
about Gold Coast and Ghana so I have also told my kids to also tell their kids so the history of this country don't get loss for
some people to lie about history to them.I want to tell this writer that Ghana history was all about Ashanti, Akwamu, Akyim,
Fanti, Ga, the Guans , Denkyira a little about Nzima and the north so if Ashanti were not among how did they get their history
in Ghana books during Osagyefo's time? There was no history about ewes, he should give us a break every Gold Coaster knows
Ashanti Gold was in the hands of the whiteman. If you don't have nothing to offer Ghana don't rewright our history. The timber,
gold, cocoa, bauxite that the whiteman was exporting to his country were they from trans- volta togoland? Jealousy, enviness
wouldn't land you anywhere.KOFI AWOONOR WAS A BIGOT PERIOD nothing will change that.
Great Prof., RIP
may he burn forever in hell
Let the dead RIP.
