When I was a graduate student at Princeton, in my first year, I visited Bronx where my sister was living in the same apartment complex with Prof Kofi Awoonor. At the time, he was lecturing part time at Columbia and pursuing his final ph.d. dissertation.

What I remember about him is that he would often speak FANTI to my sister encouraging her to be closer to his (Kofi's) wife rather than the other gullible, gossipy Ghanaians in the same complex because he found my sister articulate and educated. I spoke often with him in Fanti and he was full of excitement whenever Ghana came up. Even at that time he did not look that old; I am surprised that he was 78. May he rest in peace - those who knew him up close really considered him classy and he fitted into many Ghanaian ethnic groups and backgrounds because he spoke so many Ghana languages.... it was always difficult to pin him as an Ewe. His English was nothing like an ewe accent!!! He reminded me that part of Awonoor-Williams larger family hails from Saltpond in the Central Region, just like the Renners.

Folks - Kofi was no tribalist. He might have been an Ewe nationalist. I found him more Ghanaian than most people; I can say for a fact that he was neither an ewe-phobic nor akan-phobic, if there are such things. He was simply a Ghanaian Nationalist

Some people say he was not a bigot. We want to consider the evidence on its merits. Was he a bigot as by default because of his association with Rawlings? Was he mis-interpreted the manner a twist was given to Victor Owusu's "inward looking" statement?

All that Awoonor did was to analyse the ethnic turmoil that Busia and the PP brought in the wake of the Feb 1966 coup and pointed accusing fingers at some Akans, particularly some Asantes, for reducing the struggle for political power into "simple terms" between them and Ewes. He further correctly pointed out that they saw the "large presence of Ewes" in the civil service, the army and the police as a hindrance to establishing their own "hegemony", and thus proceeded to hound them and sack them! This created tension with some Ewes who felt that they had been hard done by. Sallah took Busia's govt to court and won after the Apollo 586 sackings. Didn't he? Was Awoonor wrong in making those claims, when there are copious empirical evidence to back those claims then and now? Those were the main things Awoonor said against the Akan/Asante bigots and it became the "chameleon faeces" into which he stepped. Awoonor simply criticised very harshly the ethnocentric politics of some Akans of the Matemeho tradition, nothing more.

He went on to write another book dedicated to both Asantes and Ewes, in which he brought out what he thought were the good values of Asantes and Ewes which could be harnessed towards Ghana's devt. Since he was rather full of praises for Asantes in that particular book, there is total silence about it.

Awoonor simply captured the politics of the period very succinctly in the Ghana Revolution.
