Nobody wants to carry a water bottle all day like a handbag. You don't need to ban sachets. You can rather increase refuse collection. Increase street cleaning resource. It will cost money of course but it will employ people ...

No government will ban water satchets because our people need easy access to cheap water as they go about their daily business in the hot sun. If you ban them people will suffer.

I agree with you. The problem is not about the water and the production of it. It is about how and why Ghanaians dispose of the sachets after use. If we don't correct this, Ghanaians will still throw bottles around anywhere if you give them the chance. In the old times, it used to be leaves and news papers, used as food wrappers. But because they are biodegradables, we don't see them as messy as we see the current plastic sachets. Education is the key, and that requires government's efforts.

Part of the solution to this problem will be to increase the number of thrash cans in the city. I was in Accra recently and after eating my yoghurt could not find a place to dispose of my waste. I held onto it for almost an hour. Most people will have just tossed it along the road side just as they do with the pure water bags. I am not saying providing the thrash cans will fix the problem but it will surely help. Some ignorant people will still walk by the thrash cans and still throw their waste in the streets.

Performing a desktop research with references from statements made by Alban Bagbin (Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing) and Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah (rtd) (Security Advisor to the President), makes me wishy-washy, these two personalities believes in the enforcement of the Law.

Sanitation byelaws (Solid and Liquid Wastes Management Bye-law, 2000) by all the Metropolitan Assemblies in Ghana, enjoins the Assembly to be exclusively responsible for the management of both solid and plastic wastes within their administrative areas.

So then should a particular business group be held responsible and consequently threaten with ban, Let us face the fact would the ban of Water Sachet production in Ghana make Ghana cleaner … No I bet to differ…

With our poor maintenance culture and rootless disregard to laws of the Country will keep Ghana in the state it finds itself even if we ban water sachet production.

I will not elaborate on the great economy impact this local industries are having on the country.. I will leave that for the readers…

Columnist: Bolus, Mercy Adede writing on ghanaweb.com continued her exposition on the subject by encouraging the Minister of Health to bring back sanitation inspectors thus creating jobs in the environmental services. For me that is a Good point.

Ghana can be made clean by the enforcement of the laws, people who litter the environment should be brought to justice and duty bearers who refuse to perform their duties should be voted out of power.

As a matter of fact the issue is misplaced water sachet producer do not litter the environment, me and you are the lawbreakers we do the littering and the law should deal with us.

When i was a kid, we used to sell water in buckets with a single cup for everyone, then we graduated to the blow plastic containers before the present sachet. These are all phases of our development.I took a simple survey one day while having my usual sunday jogging on plastic wastes on the streets.Sachet water bags consisted of 60% of the waste, black carrier bags 30% and the 10% was made up of candy wrappers. The sachet water has been around for over 2 decades now.It is time we phase it out and graduate to bottling water exclusively. We should also ban plastic carrier bags and use paper bags which are biodegradable, reusable and recyclable. We have been overwhelmed by the environmental hazard caused by these plastics and we are powerless to do anything about it.Zoomlion does not have the capability to deal with it.Let's act now to save our environment

If the processing of the water is regulated and monitored, and if the water is safe, it should be promoted for obvious reasons. But matter at issue is what to do with the pouch or sachet after its content is axhausted. The only answer I can think of is to dispose of the sachets under the national waste disposal programme, or under spegific urban bylaws. I assume that Ghana has an effective national waste disposal programme by now.

Banning it will only result in dehydration which put pressure on the very scanty health facilities in the country as sachet water is affordable to all n comes very handy. Litter control is the best idea to address this situation.
