He has lost the necessary self-control needed to keep him and his image in a state of civility and respect.

It seems that, out of desperation, he has sought refuge in mind-altering academic hallucinogens which have rather worsened his condition.

He therefore desperately has to be helped to get off the Danquamphetamines that he has been using to go on his zany highs.

Anybody who finds merit in his consistent diatribes and applauds him in his rambling reactionary articles is an accessory, a vector to his illness.

The best we can all do for him is to just simply ignore his write-ups and leave him alone to his doom. Is that so hard for everyone to do? Or have we also been infected with the bad habit of looking out for him to launch verbal assaults and tirades against him?

Needless to say, I knew Prof Awoonor at a time when he resided in New York and I am contributing this tribute to his memory.

"When I was a graduate student at Princeton, in my first year, I visited Bronx where my sister was living in the same apartment complex with Prof Kofi Awoonor. At the time, he was lecturing part time at Columbia and pursuing his final ph.d. dissertation.

What I remember about him is that he would often speak FANTI to my sister encouraging her to be closer to his (Kofi's) wife rather than the other gullible, gossipy Ghanaians in the same complex because he found my sister articulate and educated. I spoke often with him in Fanti and he was full of excitement whenever Ghana came up. Even at that time he did not look that old; I am surprised that he was 78. May he rest in peace - those who knew him up close really considered him classy and he fitted into many Ghanaian ethnic groups and backgrounds because he spoke so many Ghana languages.... it was always difficult to pin him as an Ewe. His English was nothing like an ewe accent!!! He reminded me that part of Awoonor-Williams larger family hails from Saltpond in the Central Region, just like the Renners.

Folks - Kofi was no tribalist. He might have been an Ewe nationalist. I found him more Ghanaian than most people; I can say for a fact that he was neither an ewe-phobic nor akan-phobic, if there are such things. He was simply a Ghanaian Nationalist"

Some of Okoampa's distaste for Awoonor may be pure literary jealousy. Awoonor is far more acclaimed as a poet that Okoampa and it hurts the New York teacher. Okoampa cannot say that he is a better creative writer that Awoonor so he says someone else (today Wole Soyinka, the other day Ayi Kwei Armah) is a better writer than Awoonor. Of course, in the hierarchy of Africa's literary giants, Awoonor may not quite measure up to Soyinka and Armah, just as Samuel Becket or Oscar Wilde may not measure up to Shakespeare. And so Okoampa may not measure up to Awoonor. Those paying tributes to Awoonor's literary greatness are themselves greater than Okoampa.

Now let's see Okoampa's evidence that Awoonor was working towards Ewe hegemony in Ghanaian politics (an inherently impossible task) or that he thinks Ewes are superior to Akans.

Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe's presentation and description of life and death of Kofi Awoonor's death need to be digested with care. Much is invested in the article that needs harvesting. At my very late age and haven experienced many of the events that occured in Ghna from 1970s to the present time, I am tempted to ask the link between the terrorist Group's action and Prof Awoonor's presence and death in nairobi, Kenya. Ghanaians do not easily spaeak ill of the ir death. So Kofi, any more from your text? Beyond this is the silence of the International Community on the death of an eminent Professor amidst the loss of the victims of the sept 21 Attack. Who does not know the involvement of the late poet in the politics of Ghana. People must note that the moment one enters the political arena, one must be prepared to wallow in the mud. You come out of it and you are dirty. I also see a funny trend in the type and manner the criticism is taking. (0% of the the critics of the article is "Trokosi" and some of them are using Akan names. The words some critics use are simply unacceptable.
