I have been reading Kpakpoi's series on Gas with much interest and concern. Whereas this piece has blown some holes in the "pure Ga" thesis of Kpakpoi, it has introduced many false claims too. The stuff on Wikipidia is even more educative to me than this, as to who and what constitute the Gas. BTW, one of the originals in the Accra area, the Les, who gave the name Legon to that area are now members of the Wifeme clan in Anlo and have Lashibi in Anloga as where they were given place to settle. Their head is still called Amega Le. I know "Anlos" who readily confess that they get part of the proceeds of land sales in Accra! They know where they come from and have links with the royal houses in Accra, and more often than not, make Accra their homes and never contribute much to develop where they come from in the VR, from Anlo to Agotime, where they dominate in numbers.

I was once in a seminar at which I also presented a paper with Prof. Irene Odotei in far away Bergen, Norway in the mid-90s. Being aware of some of the reasons for chieftaincy and local conflicts through my own studies, I put across a qs, to which she responded by mentioning some of the things I read in this article: the slave rising to caboceer and eventually chief! She was then collecting data and I mentioned in my rejoinder not long ago that I hadn't read the outcome of her research. I'd like to, as I believe justice hasn't been done to her the way the info was used here.

Just want to mention some false impressions created here.

1. The Akyems did not defeat the Gas in 1730. They only came to help the Gas to fight the Akwamus and as a reward got the Notes to the Accra fortifications. Check Reindorf for details. I am at work and so can't quote the exact page. The Akyems and the Asantes were then at war and the Akyems reportedly asked for a truce to honour the Ga request, for a reward of 500 slaves. The Asantes agrred, hoping the powerful Akwamus would thrash the Akyems for them. Things went badly and the rest is history. An Akwamu told me in a private exchange that they deserted the Asantes at Akatamanso in 1826 cos of that incidence. Must just be after thought but some British war propaganda might have hurt the Akwamus, same way the display of the head of the Ga King Okai Koi (ACTUALLY KILLED BY THE AKWAMUS) hurt the Gas after the Awudome and Nyive Wars, compelling them to desert the Akwamus in 1833 when Kwadwo Dei I rebelled against the Akwamus, leading to the freedom of Krepi, the Gbi and Ho areas.

2. Likewise, the Asantes did not defeat the Gas in any war in 1742 when they luckily defeated the Akyems and got the Notes. What happened was more like gun boat diplomacy. They massed their troops (20,000 strong, if my memory serves me right) on the borders of Accra and sent emissaries to Accra, claiming that they have the Notes and so should be accorded the revenues accruing therein from the ground rent. The Gas were smart enough to agree to that, beginning one of the most fruitful and gainful bargains the Gas ever made. Again, check Reindorf.

Perhaps, the Asantes could have fought and defeat the Gas had they refused to accept the allies of the Akwamus having the rights to the Notes. But, given the musical chair of who is the powerful kingdom then playing, as the Gas were already doing, most of them could have escaped and form new alliances, regroup and counter-attack the Asantes, and the Asante kingdom would have been short-lived as the dominant power then. That's why Wilks, evaluating Asante history, said diplomacy achieved the greatest victories for the Asantes rather than one.

3. Aneho (Anexo) was not founded by Gas. It was founded by the Elminas but it appears there was a large component of Anyis (Anes, Agnis) who are found mainly in the Ivory coast now. That was after the defeat of Denkiyra by the Asantes in 1700 and their seizing Elmina from them. Later many Gas from Glidzi moved to Anexo on the coast and since the Gas were greater in number, they became dominant but the chiefs of Anexo were always from Anyis or Adjigos, as we Anlos called them. Prof. Amenumey's small readable "The Ewes in Pre-colonial Times" has covered those chapters very well.

4. Claim that Gas and Ewes copy chieftaincy from the Akans by Adu Boahene is just jejune nonsense and fly in the face of the historical evidence. How succession disputes in Tado led to dispersal of Ewes (Dogbowo from which the Anlos and Fons came, e.g.,) and the tyranny of Agorkorli are part of Ewe folklore. Gas were also said to be at Ketou with the Ewes and Yorubas with their own leader before the beginning of the new migrations.

5. Claims that Ewes and Gas came from Israel is just another jejune nonsense, with roots in false writings by whites and Arabs to put black people within the Bible and the Qur'an. In fact, Joseph J. Williams devoted a whole chapter to the Hebrewisms of Asante in his extant book, Hebrewisms of West Africa, but luckily for our sanity, we don't have any Asantes claiming to be Jews or Hebrews. Google for it, folks. I beg Asantes that any nut among them who started such nonsense should be clapped down quickly!

Will you allow others to enjoy or you would have secured it with landguards? Can you please, come out with the actual historical account of the Ga people instead of trying to downplay this article? Look, history started somewhere by somebody. There is no direct accounts of our pure history before the arrival of the Europeans and as we speak, there is no tribe in Ghana that can say with bravado that it is PURE without mixing with other tribes.

I am Akwapim but I was told that my grandfather was a Ga and my grandmother as Akwapim. Even our names, according to my father, is mostly Ga so, the best we can do as Ghanaians, is to accept the fact that we are one people and should live together to build a nation that will stand the test of time. Fine history of the Gas mostly through the eyes of an Akan though materials for the account are from Pro,Irene Odotei.But the most significant aspect of the account is the corruption of the Ga language through the influence of other culture.From Fordjour Asante's account it is Akan as the dominant language that had the the most influence on the Ga language especially our Chieftaincy arrangements.

Certainly these are all positive accounts of how the various culture have shaped our experience as a people as a result of inter marriage between the cultures.But the historical account was silent on certain important events between the Ashantis and the the Gas.Conquest is one of the grounds for territorial acquisition and we know that the Ashantis tried to annex the Ga land but suffered a decisive defeat at the battle of Katamanso.The Gas as a people have held their own and had managed to repulse aggressors.

However because of urban drift and the influx of rural Ghana to Accra the Ga language had come under severe pressure and the adulteration is becoming more than we would like.There is therefore the need to rescue the language because it is in everybody’s interest to do so if the hosts are unhappy then it may become a recipe for disaster.

It is important to remember that when a language dies it dies with its culture,The Gas have a beutiful culture and therefore the need to preserve the Ga language.Those who live in Accra must learn to speak Ga.It also goes to say that every Ghanaian must learn at least another language apart fro their own.If that is done it will address the tension in tribal harmony and bring about social cohesion.

My uncle was a historian and he went as far as to Aneho to document the reason why the name Ayigbe came into existence and its relation to the Ewes and the Ga.. It is very well connected to the Ewes and the Gas who migrated from Aneho area.

How can you talk about 'kormi'- kenkey in this context but not talking about cultivation of the land, sewing the corn seeds, nurturing or taking care of the land, harvesting the crop, and the process of arriving at 'kormi' i.e kenkey. You are wrong to start the history of Gas from the middle of the groups, history. Ile Ife in all Ghana history I believe was not the starting place of the Gas.

I presume that you know the culture and tradition of the GaDangme can be traced to as far as the remnants of the Black Jews population many years ago also during the reigns of Mansah Kankan Musa, Sumaguru Kante, Mali Dzata (Kumbi Salem/Songai Empire)hence, some of Jewish tradition and costum practices by Gas.

If you believe that culture and tradition are unique identity and practices or orders of behaviour of a particular group of people, then you should be asking yourself, why practices like circumcision, outdooring of a female coming to an age/womanhood (dipo), patrilineal naming of a child, patrilineal inheritance, use of liven corn for custom etc are religiously GaDangme practices and not for example, Akans practices?. The Akans as you know adopt matrilineal inheritance formulae to name their children and to inherit their maternal uncles instead of their fathers.

You may have an academic argument regarding the mixture of Ga vocabularies i.e Akan(Ahanta, Asante, Fante, Akwapim, Akyem, Bono, Kwahu), Ewe, Hausa, Grishi, English, Portuguese, Dutch, French etc but that does is not enough to conclude that the Gas are Akans, Ewe, Brazilains(Osu Tabon)etc. Are you therefore telling your readers that because the English as you have stated have French, Portuguese, Italian/Roman, , German vocabularies in the English Language therefore, the English are French, Dutch and Roman/Italians therefore, the sovereignty of UK belongs to whoever? As a historian.

I am sure you would agree with me that from the Genesis of man, social groups have being living a nomadic style of life i.e moving from place to place to find habitation and establishing a community and identity. Thus, battles and display of physical and psychological superiority by the dominant groups. Having said that however you would also agree with me that groups were however, able to establish themselves as indigenous and homogenous social groups and communities to defend their territories and establish leadership and social controls. These gave the social groups their common identity of language, culture and heritage. The Gas are not the only group of people who went through the normndic life style. The Asantes as you know for example were not a formidable tribal group until Okomfo Anokye(the Fetish High Priest), an Akwamu from Awuku Gua - Akwapem managed to initiate the amalgamation of what is now in existence known as the Asante State or
Confederation. Secondly, Fordjuor, you appeared to base your piece largely and solely on Prof. Irene Odotei. Much as I give credence to the professor, I would equally say that Prof. Irene Odotei or whoever has no intellectual monopoly over history therefore, there is a need to compare and contrast . This the highest level of intellectual and academic challenge practice in establishing content validity and reliability. Especially, when most of our African history is 'oral' based. For example, a father of grand father or mother would tell his/her children or grand children a piece of history. It could be that the story could be bias and untrue for political and psychological reasons or handed down to the grand parents without aorta of truth/proof or logic/. It would be totally wrong to accept their stories as true unless a good research by i.e reading, debate, forums, talking to others (not only academics or traditional leaders or elders)and using logic and understanding to establish the 'FACTS' of the stories.

I would suggest that you would need to go beyond Professor Irene Odotei to earn credibility for your attempted history. Some historical 'raconteurs' and academics may try to give false or re-write history but this is a serious academic crime which you and I muast be aware of and be very vigilant else our generations would equally accused us as conspirators of our history culture and tradition. Your piece is a good attempt to initiate the debate but Sorry, you need to get the facts correct otherwise, you cannot call it 'The TRUE History of GA People'

Akyem did not defeat the Ga, The Ga sought the help of Akyem to get rid of the Akwamu and in exchange the Akyem were given the Notes to the forts. They did not defeat the Ga.

Asante never defeated the Ga. The writer must tell us where this defeat took place,

Asante defeated the Akyem, who surrendered the Notes to the forts to Asante.

Asante was defeated by the Ga and their allies at the Battle of Katamansu (Dodowa) in 1826.

The Golden stool was captured by Mantse Dowuona of Osu, albeit temporarily. The Dwaben chief managed to rescue the the stool. For rescuing the stool no gratitude was shown him by Osei Yaw Akoto, the Asantehene. He was rather denounced as having stolen some pieces associated with the stool.

Finally, The Ga and Asante had always be allies. until the English brought Ga fighters to Assist them and the Fanti against Asante. The primary reason why Katamansu happened.

Some languages are influenced by religion, commerce/trade and recently by social mobility, inter marriage and technology and closeness to their geographical borders. The Asantes relationships with the Northerners and inter-tribal marriages with the people from the North of Ghana is a typical example for you as an Asante should have acknowledged in your intellectual process.

Fordjour, you mention the examples of Ga names in Akan but your argument on this front is weak because there are many formulae for chosen a name for a child. Example day, month, family status, seniority of father, position in the family, clan/tribe, an important day for the family, tribe or country calendar, family status in the community eg a royal, an honour to a family/friend or a redeemer. You should also know that inter-tribal marriage also influences the name of the child. Fadjuor, are you aware that your Akan cousins, the Fantes have many European names so are they Europeans or have European biological or social influences?. Are you also saying that because Africans have Christian and Arabic names therefore, they are Jewish or Romans or being once ruled by Medina, Mecca, Isreal, Egypt or Palestine ?. I think you are making the unforgiveable mistakes as Dr Adu Boahene and Prof. Kofi Abrefa Busia(read about his thesis for his Phd). Prof. Mike Oquaye and Nii Ayikwei Otoo(gbeshie!) also attempted to re-write history on Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and I am sure they have realised that the topic was too big for them to intellectualise. They, like you needed proper research and good logical capacity to deal with the intellectual challenges on the topic. Your references to Irene Odotei was pathetic. It was misleading, misunderstood, mis-interpreted and misconstrued to say the least . Your piece is academically fraudulent and at best, bad history. This is ethnic genocide and political cleansing by history. I strongly advise you to go back to the drawing board. The Gas know their history.

Yes, the Gas migrated through Nigeria, just like they did through Benin and Togo on their way to the Accra Plains; they stayed for some time at a lot of places on their journey before finally settling on the Accra Plains. The Akwamus gave them the land.

If you care to know, the ancestral home of the Ga people is present day Iraq, they migrated to Egypt when Egypt was the center of civilization, after the fall of Egypt, most migrated south along the Nile, fishing and farming, creating settlements, staying for sometime before moving on. Their journey from Egypt to the Accra Plains, therefore, took a long time.

You seriously distorted history when you claimed that the Asantes defeated the Gas at Dodowa in 1826, please recheck your history, the only battle between the Gas and the Asantes happened at Katamanso in 1826, the Asantes lost, hence, the Asantes never ruled the Ga State, the Gas were never subjects of the Asantes, if you do not believe it go through the British archives, and stop making up your own history.

It is rather unfortunate when a blackman, out of inferiority complex, tries to prove that he is better than another blackman, just because of his language or where he was born. What a pity. No wonder Ghana is NOT progressing.

This is the diffusionist view of African history i.e. everything good comes from outside the country! It is often forgotten the Israelites spent 300 years in ancient Egypt and might imbibed a lot of the local culture which they took away with them. Many Africans ignore the fact that for about 4 or 5000 years starting from 5660 BC when the first dynasty Pharoah Namer/Mena was crowned Kemet or ancient Egypt was the place to go to during those ancient times.Thus the ancestor of the Jews i.e. Israelites might have copied African practices not the other way round.

Is a poorly written article in my opinion as most findings are not accurate and facts were distorted. Every tribe is a settler in the world, only God is the true owner of the land.

"Corruption: The name was likely corrupted by Portuguese, Danish, and English traders who found it difficult to pronounce".

According to earlier Historians (i.e. those before Mr. Anokye), Nkran was an Akan word for ANTS, which was likely corrupted by the Europeans to AKRA, and later to the ACCRA we use now.

Other accounts say NKRAN was given by the Akans/Guans who saw them first arriving at the coast of present day Ghana, in long columns like black SOLDIER ANTS.

So, by 'earlier' historical accounts, it is NKRAN (or NKRANI) which refers to ants/soldier ants, and not their original name, GAGA or GA; and the corruption of the name to AKRA and then to ACCRA, was by the europeans, and not the locals.
