To those of your generation who don't know, this man lived by the sword and therefore died by the sword! he was full of hatred in his heart for Ashantis and Akans in general and together with the rest of the Dzulakofe mafia (Kojo Tsikata, Tatsu Tsikata and the rest) masterminded the killing of prominent Ashantis like Gen. Afrifa etc. It's the long arm of God's justice that has taken him away. Look at where he fell; far away from home. We shed no tears for a quintinessential tribalist like Kofi Awoonor!
AWOONOR STOOD BESIDE RAWLINGS AND SAID THAT THE AIM OF THE REVOLUTION WAS TO TAKE AWAY AKANS INFLUENSE IN GHANA ESPECIALLY THE ASHANTIS HE GREATELY REJOYCED WHEN RAWLINGS SLAUGHTERED TWO HEADS OF STATES AND SENIOR MILITARY OFFICIALS 90% OF WHOM WERE NON EWES
IN ONE OF HIS WRITINGS HE SAID THAT HE WAS AN EWE FIRST BEFORE GHANA.
LET THE LORD JUDGE HIM!
I DO NOT SEEK TO DENIGRATE THE OLD PROFESSOR OF MY OLD UNIVERSITY BUT TO COMMENT ON THIS PARTICULAR STATEMENT OF THE TALKATIVE RAWLINGS,NDC FOUNDER:
JOHN JERRY RAWLINGS candidly makes a most poignant revelation here below thus:
"He said it was those qualities that struck him when he first met the Professor during a visit to the University of Cape Coast in 1982 to address students on the principles behind the December 31 Revolution." ----
By 1982 when he came to the UCC NUGS CONGRESS, Rawlings did not therefore know Kofi Awoonor prior to his second coming to power). I remember Rawlings was not so tribalistic and rather moved with radicals from other tribal groupings; but then all changed when he met the Professor who had identified the impoverishment of his people as caused by non-existent Asante hegemony and even written about it to popular condemnation of most scholars.
I was an undergraduate when J J Rawlings visited Cape Coast University in May 1982, where he met Professor Awoonor (pronounced Anlo or “Awona”). I even recalled with fond memories my question to JJ Rawlings on this occasion thus: “For how long will PNDC be provisional”?:
That time the Revolution had just begun with a cosmopolitan mix of young pretenders from different tribal backgrounds such as King Bosu of Winneba, Ato Austin, Chris Atim, James Quarshie, Akata Pore, Totobi Quakyi, and some few Anlos and Ewes. The Ewe hegemony was not pronounced until the chief secessionist socialist politician, Kofi Awoonor, hankering for political power joined up.
Kofi Awoonor was a former Secretary General of Cape Coast based Action Congress Party led by Colonel Bernasko…BUT there was something he was doing in Cape Coast University that caught my eye: As an English Lecturer in the Teacher’s University, and so desperate for political power, he became the mastermind of radical student political agitation against the ‘status quo ante bellum’ until they won and retained political power in Ghana between 1982 and 2000, and still ruling the country as NDC Government from 2008 to 2013.
Rawlings indeed did not know his nyebro until he was introduced by the socialist league students like Totobi Quakyi and Gardiner who used to rendezvous with him in UCC….and the rest is history that ended in such inexplicable tragic circumstance by radical Al Shabab, a group moulded like the pseudo-Nkrumaist revolutionary ideologues.
In his bungalow at Old Site of Cape Vars, student of the left-wing persuasion such as Totobi Quakyi, Avakame, Joe B, Turkson, Philip Gardiner, EKT Aidoo, Kweku Arhin and many others still in present NDC Government flooded there: They were always in Kofi Awoonor’s bungalow: They looked desperate and anxious for power, and rather than go into the world to work will rather than stay on after graduation in the University campus to agitate for more political power until they got it…. The student movement had leaders who will rather read Communist Books than their own Curriculum Readings…Acdemic bibliographies were jettisoned for hard copy socialist ideological Books and that is why in power they are so bereft of ideas to administer a country…
With radicals as Kofi Awoonor preaching their bile, it added to the spirit of instability in Ghana. Having being caught in coup de tat with his ewe chums of Brigadier Kattah and some evil Anloga power hungry men, they turned their attention to organising caucuses of Student Militant Groups to wage insurrection against the “bourgeoisie”. I used to hear them crying out aloud: "Workers of the World; Unite: You have nothing to lose but your chains". They were all united by one word – POVERTY and therefore HATED the Rich in society. But these people were very poor because of their laziness. They were all stuck in the Ivory Towers not willing to soil their hands by going out to work in the real world after their graduation as they looked at successful men with much envy and jealousy. Kofi Awoonor and Ama Atta Aidoo were doing in University of Cape Coast, what Fui Tsikata, Kwamena Ahwoi, Tsatsu and other left wing political pursuers were doing in University of Ghana in Legon: they gave accommodation to radical students cast in the Nkrumaist/Castro mould to forment trouble in Ghana …It was all glib talking of poisonous nature…preaching for a revolution with no objective of development but equalisation: They were the people who did not want Rawlings and Boakye Djan to hand over power to a Constitutional Civilian Rule with their bellicose and infantile cries of Let the Blood Flow: I had been watching the Student Radicals who had confronted the corrupt Military Regime of Kutu Acheampong and even lost their Secretary Yorke in the famous Car Accident that caused Kofi Totobi Quakyi to limp on.
When I was in Sixth Form in Adisco I used to see these so-called Nkrumaists and student leaderss trooping to Kofi Awoonor’s house in their Che Guevara T Shirts, black berets, faded jeans, Car Tyre sandals of Afro Moses, unkempt and wearing long beards as the present day Taliban. Infact they were the Taliban of the time.
Kofi Awoonor spent all his leisure time with these talkative socialist intelligentsia, feeding them both food and ideology all for his political kingdom…They were the people who joined the Student Task Force right from the onset of the revolution and then introduced their guru to the empty headed J J Rawlings: With his recent experience in 1979 Political Campaign as ACP Secretary, and having written a Book that advocated for secession of the Anlos and Ewes, Professor Kofi Awoonor was sold the perfect person. As Rawlings needed to pursue a bitter envious war against successful men and women of Ghana the meeting with the chief propagator of ethnocentrism was a match made in heaven to redeem their people and take over the top echelons of power and administration.
I saw all these things and sooner than later I will write properly about these things.
Ghana has suffered at the hands of bad people, indeed!...These radicals were the ones who sold Kofi Awoonor to Rawlings in May 1982, when Rawlings came to the August NUGS CONGRESS to inaugurate the new leadership of Amoah Larbi, Hans Djaba, and Dan Botwe etc. who had defeated the socialist brigade of Nazir Brown in UST for the first time. It was in this August Congress and personally saw all the socialist agitators who joined the Revolution to rule the country from 1982 to 2000, including Kofi Adu, Kyeretwie Poku, Obre, Adu Gyamfi (Cotopaxi), Amissah Arthur, Goosie Tanoh, Karl Marx Hamilton (now writing as Margaret Jackson), Atampugre, B B Bayor, Philip Gardiner, Samora Machel Turkson, Oteng Agyei etc.
When Ghanaians were being murdered by the revolution, you never heard a word from these leeches and parasites who have ruled us for most of their personal lives. They all received free education from cradle to manhood but destroyed it for others. They cried out aloud: Let the Blood Flow…Let the Blood Flow…Let the Blood Flow indeed.
The Talibanisation of Ghana under the above named radicals have come to bite the roost…As my Father’s at the coast say in their local parlance “Itur edur bon a; ibi ka woano”! We used to interprete as “If you throw a ball against the wall…it comes back to hit you”. May God touch the hearts of wicked men to repent of their sins before it revisits their next generation!

I am pretty sure you are one those blakies descendants from the Gorillas of Ashanti deep forests. This is the reason we, proud Ewe (hanson & beautiful with fair skin)hate you akans & ashantis: we have decided not to you Ashantis to continue to kill us like those bastards of afrifa & co killed my uncle Gen Kotoka like an akuko (chicken). Never it won’t happen again and you hadn't see anything with Fo Rawlings, Foga Tsikata the elder and lawyer Tsatsu who just won the third round of judgment against the ashantis in the recent election petition. ashantis have proved to the whole world that they are unintelligent (having not eaten fish for its oil) by pushing their tribal party to go to court for an election soundly fair. We will damn & confront you from any corner. My advice to you is to stop eating monkey (nam) your close parents, for male gorillas from the forest have fathered your great ancestors because of low count sperm. Stop eating okissinam and other bush meats. As you came to steal all the lands in Accra from those other bastards Gaa, try to eat more fish for its oil so your kids will be genus learning krata (paper) like the Awoonors, Tsikatas, Anyidohos. Go learn your history, blackie okuafo (not kuffor) abuafo. Your origin is in south Soudan if you don’t know, go learn about your legend and history . No more Kotoka style killing.

Ashiagbor’s son has not returned home.
"The hippo has overturned our canoe"
The guns are "pointing to the earth"
They say he was cut down in the middle of a song.
Hesin? never falls.
Ame adze anyi, gake eha mat? o.
We will sing the "Song of Sorrow" at the festival.
We will never allow the dance of hyenas at our sacred ground.
We are celebrants and we follow the practiced steps of the ancestors.

Wo gbe to lame nami
Hesin?ga Kofi, wo gbe le miafe ?ukawo me
Hesin?ga, your voice echoes in the recess of our minds.
When "the Sea Eats the Land at Home",
Your song reached shore to shore, above the roaring of the angry sea.
Your plaintive anthem captured the tireless struggles and travails of the brave ones
Who wage ceaseless battles against angry waves.
Your song "still lingers in the chambers of memory".
When Stanislaus, the shameless criminal, escaped from prison in Poonaville, Tennessee,
They "burnt down the jail… They could not eradicate the smell".
You were the only witness and we heard your testimony.
You remained steadfast, predicting that Stanislaus would hide in Nassau
The hideout reeks with toxic fumes of ethnic hatred.
That stench afflicted Rwandans and caused mayhem with untold tragedies.
Seekers would find Stanislaus in Denkyira, wearing flamboyant clothes in variegated
Colors, selling fools’ gold.
Stanislaus is trapped in consummate self-loathing
Stanislaus stands "like porcupine in clothes'
And "walked like the wandering duck into [Amega Dunya's] song."
Torgbega chuckles, "Will this too insult the poet?"
Hesin?ga, Efo Kofi, your voice has thundered across all lands.
Your "House by the Sea" is superior to the confining cells within the edifice of James.
Your songs made the stone walls glow with life
The guards danced Atshiagbekor, abandoning the marching orders of the dictator.
Hesin?ga, Efo Kofi, you dared us to "postpone dying" "Until the Morning After"
You made love to the earth and lived in its bosom.
You cleared a path on Earth for Brother Amamu,
Paving the way for Brother Lumumba,
Who got lost in the American racial desert, to return Home.
You told us when "ants break their ordered march", "there is chaos"
"But another time, one day, the ants will return to the rank"
You gave a soul to your songs
You buried your songs within the "Breast of the Earth"
Where it is impossible for the "Beaver Bird” to lay "its egg"
Your songs germinate within the fertile soil of Wheta
Spreading their roots within hot and dry lands
Your songs are celebrated in cold and icy lands.
Your songs flow through our veins
Your songs echo through the waves that touch each continent.
From Wheta to Dzodze to Accra to Kumasi to Sunyani to Bolga to Bahia to Rio de Janeiro, to Havana to New York to Philadelphia
Your songs find a fertile and willing earth to nurture and sustain them.
Hesin?ga, Efo Kofi, you spoke to your brothers who are gone before you.
They are: Joe de Graft, Ellis Komey, Pao Kayper, Camara Laye, Chris Okigbo,
Alex La Guma, Robert Serumaga, and Geombeyi Adali Mortty.
Then there are others who recently joined the ancestral choir: Chinua Achebe, Efua
Sutherland.
These are your words: "your tombs are the verses carved on granitic memoirs"
Hesin?ga, Efo Kofi, the travelers heard your words.
Those left behind heard your words.
Hesin?ga, Efo Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor, today, as you embark on this journey to join the ancestors,
We offer your words: "your [tomb is] the verses carved on granitic memoirs"
Your songs will live within the hearts and souls of people of all land.
Langston Hughes' soul dwells amidst "Ancient Dusky Rivers"
Hesin?ga, Efo Kofi Nyidevi Awoonor, your soul lives within Ancient Lands.

Please, never use our local letters when sending articles to ghanaweb. The webmaster has no time to format them so they can come out well. Myjoyonline does that but not ghanaweb. It's better to use the English equivalents of those letters than the true ones. In that way you don't get question marks replacing those letters. Besides, you cannot be sure you are writing the vernacular words correctly - be it Twi, Ga or Ewe especially when it comes to the diacritical marks unless you are an expert in the particular language.

An Appeal for Civility
I would kindly and respectfully ask that we show temperance and civility in engaging each other. Prof. Awoonor has been vilified for groundless reasons. There are spurious comments leveled against him without intellectual justification. Where is the textual evidence showing that Prof Awoonor is against a particular ethnic group? What would be the context of such remarks? Prof Awoonor has written volumes and volumes of works. I would like a debate in substantive terms, not innuendos, or rumors, his supposed antipathy toward a Ghanaian ethnic group. Let us not cast aspersions at each other. Ghanaians are brothers and sisters. Ghanaians are Gas, Ewes, Ashantis, Fantes, Dagombas, Mamprusis, Nzemas, etc.
Prof. Awoonor's poetry originates from his Ewe traditions, akin to WB Yeats rooting in his birth place, Sligo County, Ireland. Great writers often plant their roots within specific traditions; they harness national (international) linguistic/cultural heritage to attain a global voice. Hesinoga Kofi Awoonor has achieved that dimension. His achievement brings pride to all Ghanaians, Ewes, Ashantis, Gas, etc.
Just about every major newspaper/magazine publications paid tribute to this lustrous son of Ghana. Let's use the occasion of his tragic death to reach into the best in ourselves. Instead of expressing rabid ethnic sentiments, let's show love for each other.

In 2004 or 2005 Prof Awoonor delivered a paper on 'Nkrumah, Dubois and Padmore' at the Dubois centre in Accra in honour of Pan-Africanism. Hardly had he finished his address when a young man shot up his hand. He was called to ask his question or make his comment. What did the young man do? He went on, for more than five minutes, ranting about how Prof was a war-monger. According to the young man, this was in Prof's 'This Earth, My Brother.' I was interested; I was working on a paper at the postgraduate level which was titled 'Awoonor: Creator and Critic' I asked him first several questions, including to quote just one line from the publication in question. No answer. It became apparent that the man hadn't read any of Awoonor's works. At any rate, I told the man my piece of mind too, especially that he didn't have the sense of decency to know where to do what. Anyway, Prof gave me a piece of advice and that's what I want to share everybody. He smiled at me and said: 'Kwasi, you know I feed on controversy. I wish this young man can engage me at the proper place and I will answer him. But as for my works, once they are in the public domain, everybody can interpret them the way they want to.'
So, please Prof don't waste your time on can't read. Thanks

Characteristically, those who vilify Prof have never read his works. He has left us with gems. His writing shows energy and beauty. Prof's works speak for him and they are widely accessible.

i see people strenuously trying hard to right the wrongs of prof Awoonor concerning his tribal stance but they always end up getting us even more confused. we are told that the man was such a great writer if that was true and how come his so called Ewe hegemony ended up being so much misinterpreted as mr Awuyah wants us to believe. i have not had any opportunity to read any of his works except the Cathedral, even as a literary work it was so concise and simple that any body could understand it so i find it very difficult to take the misinterpretation excuse. in any case is it not true that he ever apologized for the book when being vetted in Parliament. but of course you could understand why he would have the courage to put all that to paper. aat the time he wrote that his Nyebro had had many years as preident and as one Ewwe man puts it, 80 percent of all ministries, departments and Agencies had an Ewe as head of the organization or were the most populous in the organization. of-course he genuinely believed that it was meant to be like that thus his belief in Ewe superiority to the Akan. but its unfortunate he had to leave us in the manner he did may he rest in eternal peace

Dr Ahoofe, you offer a spurious statement rather than fact. Your knee-jerk remark of read the "Ghana Revolution" is a ruse. It is a puerile tactics of someone threading water. Just what is "mnemonic murder"? The adjective "mnemonic" has to do with memory aid. What is "a memory aid of murder" Bombastic and pretentious language may have appeal for some constituency. However, as one of Prof Awoonor's favorite Jazz artist, Coltrane, used to say, "Make it plain".
It takes desperation to suggest that a tribute to one of Africa's best poet (this is the consensus of major scholars Asante, Gates, to Aidoo to Anyidoho) makes one a "neo-Nazi defender". Interestingly, this list includes Mr. Akuffo Addo (NPP flag bearer) and President Mahama, etc. It is needless to mention the major national/international Newspapers and magazines.
It takes some gut to compete with a dead person for attention. Guess who is at peace and who is troubled?
