  Yes, it is only the brainwashed that don't see the importance of the extended family in our daily lives. And not only the extended family, but also the teacher and pastor in the community.

  I have spent most of my life in Europe and will NOT wish to witness the HPRRORS of a NUCLEAR FAMILY on any family. To me, it glorifies GREED & SELFISHNESS. All it says to others is 'I AM ALRIGHT BROTHER!!! YOU GO FEND FO YOURSELF'.
  
  Do we want members of our families to die alone without any family around? In Europe, there are many cases of people dying in their rooms & lying there for years without family members knowing - ALL BECAUSE OG THIS SO CALLED NUCLEAR FAMILY 'CIVILISATION!!!'
  
  LET US KEEP OUR SYSTEM - IT IS THE BEST AND ONLY TWO WEEKS AGO, ENGLAND WAS DEBATING LEARNING FROM INDIANS, HOW NOT TO ABANDON THEIR ELDERLY & LOOKING AFTER THEM AT HOME - Hmmmmmmmmmm A STUDY IN NUCLEAR FAMILY

  London: Britain's Health Minister Jeremy Hunt said that the country should look at India's attitude towards caring for the elderly for lessons on how to manage "national shame" of ignoring old citizens.
  
  Mr Hunt was speaking in reference to figures that revealed that up to a million elderly people in the UK were being consigned to a life of loneliness and ill health because of society's failure to take responsibility for older relatives.
  
  "In those (South Asian) countries, when living alone is no longer possible, residential care is a last rather than a first option," he said in a provocative speech at the National Children's and Adults Services conference in North Yorkshire today.
  
  
  
  "And the social contract is stronger because as children see how their own grandparents are looked after, they develop higher expectations of how they too will be treated when they get old."
  
  "If Britain is to tackle the challenge of an ageing society, it must learn from South Asian countries and restore and reinvigorate the social contract between generations," Mr Hunt said.
  
  "And uncomfortable though it is to say it, it will only start with changes in the way we personally treat our own parents and grandparents," he added.
  
  Mr Hunt highlighted research showing there are now 800,000 people in England who are chronically lonely, even though "each and every lonely person has someone who could visit them and offer companionship".
  
  "There is a problem of loneliness that in our busy lives we have utterly failed to confront as a society. Apart from the sheer cost of human unhappiness, loneliness is as bad for one's health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It is worse for you than obesity because it increases the risk of heart disease, blood clots and dementia," he said.
  
  Mr Hunt had recently announced plans to set up a rigorous inspection regime aimed at rooting out abuse and poor quality care in residential homes.
  
  The Care Quality Commission is to take on 600 volunteers with first-hand experience of the care system to help carry out checks.
  
  The commission is considering using hidden cameras and "mystery shoppers" to monitor quality standards. Failing care homes will be fined or closed down.

  I was discussing a similar thing with a caucasian at work on monday. I tried explaining how I was raised and how the extended family system worked. It sounded like a fairy tale to the caucasian. I focused on the higher level of discipline that comes from being brought up by a relative rather than the pampering that one's parents may use. I also mentioned the perception of my cousins being as important (and close) as my siblings, a direct result of living and growing up together in the same household.
  
  My parents brought up my cousins and my uncle took care of me and we are all the better for it. One uncle even became more responsible after he was given a little boy to take care of for a short while.
  
  The caucasian was surprised that good things like this exist on our continent and we never showcase them.
  
  I remember when one had to travel to boarding school and several relatives give presents; a little money here, some gari and shitor there, underwear here a shirt there..., not because your parents may not be able to provide, but to show that they, the extended family, support your progress and believe in you. When things became difficult, it is encouraging to know that several people were looking forward to your success and you should work hard and not disappoint them.
  
  Akwasi Boateng's post is great. Hunt should look to rural Africa too lol.
