This is the country its boast of scientist, engineers etc, etc but still, gorvenment school blocks are roofed with Corrugated Asbestos roofing sheets in order to kill school children, which in Ghanaian set of mind, it shows status. The number one disease in Ghana is lack of education in every sphere of endeavour. A common construction labourer in Europe, is abreast with dangers associated with use of asbestos materials, whilst in Ghana, Architect and Engineers, design and build with such poisonous materials.

  Much as I also think that Robert Baidoos article above was excellent and revealing, I am afraid that other over-riding problems we are saddled with in this country makes the issue pale in comparison with other prevailing socio-economic challenges staring us in the face.
  
  I actually fear that the health menace of asbestos in this country is much worse and more serious than what meets the eye. Prior to Roberts article above, I had casually heard about the dangers associated with the use of asbestos as a building material. But I hesitate to ask, isnt it asbestos that was/is used in the roofing of all State Housing Company huses in Kaneshie, Dansoman, Chorkor, Mamprobi, Ringway Estates, Labadi Estates etc?
  
  If so, dont we have a serious problem on our hands in terms of the possibility of impending illnesses? Could this be an explanation of the increasing rise in the numbers of cancer cases in this part of the world?
  
  I also hesitate to ask that, why is it that this issue and others such what Dan (contributor above) has hinted about on mercury and lead, are left to us ordinary Ghanaians to discuss and expose. Where are all those pompous professors and medical doctors, Researchers, Chemical Engineers, the various professionals in the area of scientific research and so on and so forth? Apart from complaining about the lack of funding, cant they at the very least write on these issues to at least inform the general public about the real threats of what we are up against?

  Yes I am surprised that a Ghanaian like yourself has still not come to the realization that we are all being herded into an abyss of dimwittedness and sheer stupidity. And unfortunately, the more educated we are, the worse the condition seems to be.
  
  A clear example of our predicament is what the writer refers to in his article in the encounter with the EPA. He the writer should count himself lucky that he even managed to get someone to answer to his phone call at the EPA. These days phone calls to many state and even private organizations are routinely not answered.
  
  It is not only the economy and the society that has significantly relapsed in recent times, but the qualitative values of our mentality as a people is at an all time low. It has degenerated to such a low that I fear for the worse in the near future.
  
  The symptoms of what is coming are the peoples resort to squabbling about silly, vulgarand petty ethnic differences and taking sides with the two most criminal organizations in Ghanas history - the NDC and the NPP, to defend their crass ineptitude and looting of state property and coffers.

  asbestos buried in the soil after a number of years can explode with disastrous consequences. This I came across in the 80s as a physics student in my research on explosives. Beyond cancer from radiations' this physical danger also exists I therefore wonder why it is still not only in use but in production.

  They would rather have more cash and properties than knowledge and wisdom. The politicians knowledge this folly and they offer just that remedy.
  
  Keep them ignorant and rule for a time. Ghanaians don't care about anything. In fact, very few would read and take any cue from this educative piece. It is like pushing against a brick wall.
  
  One thing I have realized, democracy is bad for the average African. We need an Nkrumah-mentality leader again. Someone to push against the tide and create massive changes in our dear land.

  Governments have come and gone. No Government have taken asbestors seriously. Most of the Ministers knows that asbestos, lead and mecury causes cancer but they just don`t care.
