On the surface you sound right that tribal affiliation came into play, but 'kinsman' here is about 'family' not just tribe.

Second point the eminent Judge was his own security man and needed an assurance to engage beyond the casual in the streets. I bet you will do the same if not act more cautious in his shoes.
Third, you need to get the message that unlike some few MPs demanding security, this history making Judge chooses not to take advantage of what is his right!!!
Fourth, you eliberately ignore the humility and simplicity that emerged!
Fifth Justice Atuguba and his colleagues, all of them, did not make John Mahama President. GOD through the voice of his people did. They just interpreted this act legally and confirmed the people's choice. If it hurts you, pathetic, but you will have to learn to live with it or if it is 'too hot, advise yourself towards countries you think people choose better and judges do better', apologies to....!!!

Congratulions on a nice character piece on the great Justice Atuguba. As a journalistic piece of writing, it was excellent. Why do I say that? You wrote about a person who presided over a Supreme Court election Petition case which was nationally, historically, mommentous in Ghana's jurisprudence and politics. It was a massive redefinning momment in the history of our Democrasy and The Rule Of Law. For about two decades or so, our democrasy had been hijacked by vagabonds and kleptomaniacs masquerading as politicians. The reputation of the highest institution in the land, The Judiciary was in the gutter, where Kufuor and his short-sighted megalomaniac government had planted it. The Chief Justice and The Asantehene avoided the vagabonds like the plague and safe-guarded their reputations by remaining neutral to the shagrin of the NPP hawks. The Chief Justice smartly handed over the petition case to Atuguba, who set himself on the devine mission of rescuing the reputation of the Judiciary. He very swiftly brought the pompous egoistic politicians to heel. He delivered a resounding verdict against the frivolous petition by the NPP, which reverberated accross the land. Nana Akufo-Addo, politically, is now damaged goods. What was left of his reputation is irreparably damaged. A lot of skeletons are creeping out of his cupboard and it is becoming increasing clearer why he was hell-bent on winning power at all costs. He has quickly taken refuge in Britain, could he be running away from justice? Thanks to Justice Atuguba, Akufo Addo will not take over this country and sell to the highest bidder. The sands of political power has irrevocably shifted from the pompous minority to the majority. This is also being played out in our student movement - NUGS. The NPP minority is trying to hi-jack it. They will lose miserably and permanently simply because they are in the nefarious minority. In a democrasy majority wins the day. The days of Kufuor's 'bigmanship' and impunity should be repudiated in national life. It is up to John Mahamah to carve a historic name for himself by proving his critics wrong and put Ghana back on the road to rapid development.

His so called tribesmen have recently become notorious in their crimes in the name of Atuguba. "I saw an opportunity and I took advantage of it. I did not want to retire pennyless and houseless like some of my colleagues of which Kpegah is an example, therefore I acted decisively to secure myself a better retirement. The decision I imposed on the people of Ghana was a compromised one devoid of ethics and jurisprudence, however; I had my future at stake and I had to act"

I got close and attempted to shake hands but he seemed reluctant. Looking at my strange face, he just nodded in response. I was unsatisfied. I wanted to talk to him by all means. I wasn't about to give in. So: I remained adamant. But I needed a plan B.

I drew back closer to him and said in a low tone ' mam dela hu am bia ooh'. To wit ' I am your kinsman'. Now I got his attention - quickly. He could now trust the strange face I presented. And believe me, my face is strange enough to make a Supreme Court judge distrust me on a first glance."

Truly great men are this simple. You only need to read all the election petition judgements to see that the one from Justice Atuguba was the most intellectually researched. How I wish we had more like him on the Bench
