Those of us old enough remember him from a very long time. I didn't know he brought the TATA buses from India. Before then it was Willowbrook and Leyland buses from England that held sway in Ghana. Kässbohrer-Setra (a masterpiece of German engineering) was for long distance journeys and a monopoly of STC. TATA served us well, ruddy, easy to repair and better than these Yutong buses. TATA buses run from Legon to different parts of Accra carrying students and university workers. Those were the days the buses run on time - roughly.
I never knew Sawyerr bought a conveyor belt with his own money. Hope he didn't get it back through some nefarious means.
Harry Sawyerr, Rest in Perfect Peace. We shall remember you.
But this tribute could have been better written. It should have told us a bit more about the man and his political life (he was a life-long politician) and especially his Nkrumah days. What about his links with Nigeria since it seems the Sawyerrs came from Nigeria a long time ago and lived all their lives in Ghana.

I knw Harry Sawyerr. He was ethnocentric hating the idea that Ashantis should invade Accra to take over Accra lands. All tribes are invading Accra but Sawyerr, an avowed anti-Ashanti hater, singled Ashantis out. Because of that inner feeling of him I did not like to get close to him. He was outwardly good but inwardly ethnocentric. A typical Kofi Awonoor student.

Mr Otabil, thanks for your tribute for this great man but I don't know who is going to raise funds for your proposal. Is it going to be a Government undertaking or a private establishment? Whatever form it will take, the Centre for leadership and Nation building will be a complete waste of funds and the reason is simple. There is overwhelming evidence all over Africa that Leadership training or nation building training means nothing to the BLACKMAN.What type of training can change the mindset of the corrupt educated African politicians we see today? The unabated and deeply-rooted corruption among educated African politicians including our own NDC and NPP crooks is a glowing testimony that in Black Africa leadership training or nation building training is meaningless. I think Harry Sawyerr SCHOLARSHIPS for university students will be more appropriate.I rest my case.

Thank you,Kojo Essuman. You have hit the nail right on its head. There are other ways to honour the late Harry Sawyerr.A scholarship in his name is a good idea.A Centre for Leadership Training and Nation Building will be a big JOKE considering the bizarre mindset of Ghanaians.Do Ghanaian medical doctors, engineers, lawyers, accountants, architects economists, bankers etc need any special training in Leadership or Nation building in order to manage the affairs of our nation? The answer is a big NO.The academic and professional training they have acquired have equipped them with enough knowledge to make Ghana a PARADISE but the problem is their mindset.I doubt if any institution institution can change the corrupt, wicked and irresponsible mindset of Ghanaians.

That's why Ghanaians will remain in darkness, we're failing because we lack something that needs to be changed. I support Kofi's proposal to have a centre that educates government officials on quality leadership.

Dada Harry will be remembered by those of us from Northern Ghana who had to travel on the "Ofinso" horrible road back and forth to attend college in the South in the early 80s. We nicknamed Harry "Kassbora" after the German made solid Setra buses that our STC Corporation used then. Robust as they were, they withstood the worst of roads and always brought us down south and back up north safely. Harry continued to import those buses apart from the Tata buses, but after him in the transport ministry, no one knows what happened. I heard some people said they were too expensive! "Human life is cheap in the eyes of our leaders of the day", I told myself! Rest in perfect peace, dada!
